I'm not really sure how I got into the music business or furthermore, how I ended up starting a music supervision (soundtracks) company. It could've been the countless times my mom played Paul Simon and Manfred Mann while doing yardwork. It could've been that I had nothing better to do. It may have been the high school spanish films we made for classes and how excited I got when I edited in my favorite songs to back-up any dialog and action. Or...maybe even Dawson's Creek, Scrubs, Top Gun and various other movies that so perfectly enhanced [...]

Aside from Paul Simon's Graceland , I'd have to say that Nil Lara's self titled album has been on my Top 5 since it's debut in 1996 from Metro Blue Records. I initially saw him open up for Rusted Root at the Paramount Theater in Denver the year his album was released and I bought it, fingers crossed, that the album might be half as great as his performance. Since then, his songs have been placed on too many mix CDs to count (tapes back then) and I've seen dozens and dozens of my friends scour and [...]

Pick It And Stick It by Nicholas Freilich Michael Vick is going to hell and, in all likelihood, jail. But, did you also know that he is a card-carrying member of Al-Qaeda? According to an already infamous complaint filed by Jonathan Lee Riches (Copyright!) [sic], Vick stole Riches' dogs, sold them on ebay, and used the resulting profits to buy arms from Iran. Although plausible , Riches' story loses some credibility when he asks for over sixty billion dollars in damages. Regardless, I've always been a [...]

Over the months since I first posted about Cuban-American musician Nil Lara , I've gotten a steady stream of comments from folks who remember his music, liked him a lot, and wonder what happened to him. Well, for several months now he's been quietly playing a monthly show at the Transit Lounge in Miami around the first week of each month for those so inclined. I wrote about him, "Lara is soulful and passionate and sings like his heart is burning. Add in [...]

Hey! Pat Spurgeon from Rogue Wave got a new kidney last weekend! I received an email from his mom Jane, saying simply that Pat had been the recipient of a kidney on January 13th and that he was recovering at home. Since so many of you wonderful and generous people donated $$ to his medical care fund a few months ago , I thought I'd pass along the good news. We wish you a speedy recovery, Pat, and hope you'll be back to your formidable drumming ways soon. [...]

Today marks one year (!) since I AM FUEL, YOU ARE FRIENDS took its first tentative steps with an initial post, and I've been contentedly rolling along ever since, gathering steam as I go. I know that downloading music (and absorbing all that I have to say here) can sometimes be like drinking from a firehose, so I thought to compile you a 20-song mix of my absolutely favorite tracks that I have featured in the first year of this blog. Some of these tunes I posted up way at the beginning when I [...]

Nil Lara is a Cuban-American songwriter with Venezuelan roots who has just blown me away. I read about him recently on Matt Nathanson's celebrity playlist (of all places), sought him out, and immediately loved what I heard. Lara is soulful and passionate and sings like his heart is burning. Add in heavy doses of warm & layered Latin percussion, traditional Cuban and Venezuelan string instruments, and his soaring chants and vocals (in a combination of Spanish and English) - and I was hooked. It's been named by some "Number 2 on my list [...]
