For The Key’s year-in-review, we asked our trusted sources – our writers and photographers, XPN’s on-air staff, fellow bloggers in the Philly scene and even a few musicians – to send us their Top Five Whatevers. Could be the traditional music route – albums, songs, concerts of the year – or it could be only ... Continue reading

Next week, Neil Young and Crazy Horse will issue Americana , their first album in nine years, comprised entirely of reworked classic, American folk songs. In celebration of its release, Consequence of Sound decided to turn the tables and put together a list of our favorite covers of Young's exhausting back catalogue. There are plenty - hundreds of them - and they stretch back to as far as the '60s and '70s. Because we couldn't include them all, the list has been cut to a healthy collection of 25 solid inclusions. Something [...]
E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren breaks out the top hat, cane and tap shoes (I'm not bullshittin' back here) for his new video "Dream Big" from his excellent new release, Old School . Lofgren has always been incredibly creative and he doesn't disappoint here. Check out Nils, Bruce and rest of the E Street Band tonight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They are the only guests. Should be a good one. Next week we look ahead to a big Springsteen week at SXSW in Austin where we will have complete coverage. [...]
As we eagerly await the "Wrecking Ball Tour," here are Nils and The Boss from 1992. Happy Valentine's Day! Nils Lofgren Official Website
This ain't your daddy's rock album ... it's your granddad's. If there's a canon of legendary rock guitarists, Nils Lofgren likely occupies a spot on it. He may not have immediate name recognition, but his almost 30-year tenure as part of the E Street Band has revealed him to be a very talented guitar player. Unfortunately, his new solo outing is not as indicative of his talent as is his tenure with the folks of E Street. Old School is likely to appeal to die-hard...
[ Buy It ] Nils Lofgren and band mates hit power pop perfection with the single "White Lies" but it only received heavy airplay in the Washington D.C. area. Even with an "A" rating from Robert Christagu, 1 +1 , released in January of 1972, did not sell. C'est dommage! At 20, Lofgren had already played guitar and piano on After The Gold Rush and with Crazy Horse on their debut. After Grin broke up, years before touring worth Springsteen, Lofgren recorded a self-titled album in 1975 that will always stand [...]

Here are your albums of the year, based on page views in 2011. Click through the titles for expanded coverage ... No. 10- THE ORIGINAL [...]
This year's rock and pop list is a heady mix of the old (Paul Simon, Lindsey Buckingham) and the new (the Black Keys, Death Cab for Cutie). I thrilled to comebacks (Daryl Hall, Yes) and quiet triumphs (Gregg Rolie, Nick Lowe), and swerved off into a niche inside of a niche with Neal Morse's faith-based prog rock. Then there was [...]

Since 2007, Nils Lofgren has spent two years on the road with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, played the Super Bowl, had hip replacement surgery and lost close friends, E Street Band members, Danny Federici and the "Big Man" Clarence Clemons. Lofgren throws the emotions from these events and more life experiences into one pot and stirs up an excellent 12-track collection called Old School . On the rockin' title track, Lofgren gets a little help from former Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm and takes a shot at all those whiners who would rather complain than get out and actually do [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Q + A Joseph Quever Nils Lofgren has worn many hats during his 40-plus years in the music business. When he was only in his late teens and virtually unknown, he played on Neil Young 's classic album 'After the Gold Rush.' He led his own band, Grin, which made four albums during the first half of the '70s. He joined the [...]
Here's a look back at the Top 10 stories from last month on SomethingElseReviews.com, based on page views from our readers. For the first time, two items from last month's poll return for a second run - Transatlantic (which was the top reader pick from October 2011 at SER) and our review of Nils Lofgren's new solo release. Lofgren actually [...]
Nils Lofgren, the longtime member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, has emerged with a fiery, emotionally frank solo release – his first in six years. Lofgren pushes back (and hard) on Old School, against modernity’s self-centered hypocrisy, our own reckless disregard for things we should hold more dearly, even the physical infirmities associated with middle age. The album, available [...]
Ring in 2012 with the January 24 release of The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (Barsuk), the new album from Nada Surf. A celebratory day-of -elease show will take place at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom ... Mazzy Star is set to release a new digital single via its own Rhymes Of An Hour Records on [...]

Nils Lofgren : The Sun Hasn't Set On This Boy Yet [ purchase ] Could one of rock's great declarations of independence have really come from one its most famous sidemen? Absolutely! Before he joined Springsteen's E-Street Band or toured with Neil Young, Nils Lofgren was a 17 year old B-average senior who dropped out of his suburban Maryland high school to become a rock star. As he recently told The Wall Street Journal, "Nobody dropped out of school where I was, except the [...]

Contributed by Christopher Gedos Everest, Richard Swift and Red Cortez played at The Satellite (formerly Club Spaceland) on Monday, February 28th. It was the final Monday for Red Cortez’s residency. They played 4 free shows and gave away 4 free EPs (different each week) throughout the month. It was either the final Spaceland residency or the first Satellite residency, and I’m sure the crowd would’ve been at max capacity were it not for the unnecessary, corporate-driven name change. Five piece Everest was Neil Young’s backing band on the legend’s most recent tour. I could [...]
