Ted Hawkins: Missin' Mississippi [ purchase ] I will not spend time repeating myself, because I have just written a long piece about Ted Hawkins over at my own music blog . If you are not familiar with Hawkins, you really should be, and seriously won't regret looking further into his music - there are a couple more tunes to get you started in my Ted Hawkins post. Hawkins was raised in Biloxi, Mississippi (in fact, he also has a great song called [...]
Nina Simone - "Gimme Some (Mike Mangini Remix)" The drums in this song, in this version of this song, drop the ballast off the sides and the song floats up and hovers right around the place where you hear music come in your ears. In case you've forgotten, you don't actually experience music any other way, but this song reminds you of that, that you have ears. Or it doesn't, and I'm reminding you, but in any case, we're there now, so let's talk about it. "Dan, I can see dancing with my [...]

Red Lorry, I'm So Sorry Yellow Lorry, Not To Worry Just Don't Fuckin Do It Again. Alright, alright, goddamitall, wouldya calm the hell down? Thank you. Slightly mental right now, the Kitchen, alright? Pots and pans all over the show, sinister brews gurgling in dark recesses, the smell of ozone all about and if anyone lights a match in here it's gonna blow so big the explosion will be heard on Krakatoa. Thus the brief hiatus. But fear not, we should resume regular transmissions next [...]

Okay, no time right now, but I do have a couple of housecleaning issues to deal with: "The Pusher" by NINA SIMONE First and foremost, I'm starting a new blog. "What the fuck, Dylan?" you might be saying. "You can't even keep up with this one." I know, I know. This one isn't a music blog, though. For no exceptional reason I decided to try and watch 365 movies in the next 365 days and write about the movies whenever possible. Since I didn't want to [...]

The Animals: House of the Rising Sun [ purchase ] Probably the best known version of this classic song...although the earliest known recording dates from 1933. And here are a few versions from the gals: The Be Good Tanyas: House of the Rising Sun [ purchase ] Tracy Chapman: House of the Rising Sun [ purchase ] N.B. [...]

It's about time to post an update to the Nina Simone video library . YouTube police have been busy deleting, so there's some links that need to be revised. Some fellow bloggers have been helpful in pointing out more video sites, so I have a few new sources to check out as well. Maybe I can get that done by the end of this month. In the meantime, here's some video highlights that I promised. ****** | 5| [...]

We just got a really fun CD in the mail, "Verve: Remixed 4." We've long been fans of these remix albums: they consist of reputable current day DJ's and producers taking old, classic Verve Records hits (from Ella Fitzgerald, our girl Nina, Dinah Washington, etc.) and updating them with a new remixed spin. They're really fun and enjoyable albums, particularly if your fans of the jazz tunes they update. Check out two tracks from the album below: a sly and linking California Soul , remixed by Diplo, and a soft and sad I Get [...]

From the latest in the Verve/Remixed series (#4 to be exact), comes Pilooski's edit of Nina Simone's "Take Care of Business. Pilooski has a knack for taking tracks from an artist's catalog that weren't necessarily hits and making them into modern day Gems. Nina Simone - Take Care of Business (pilooski edit)

I've have always been a fan of the Verve Remixed series; what a genius idea to combine wonderful jazz and bossa nova standards with the wit and reinterpretations of today's modern remixers. What is remarkable about Verve Remixed: Volume 4 is that it is not only vastly different than the previous 3 volumes, but that each remix has its own unique flair and twist. The Psapp remix of Astrud Gilberto's "Bim Bom" infuses the original with the childish wonder of Psapp's quirky instruments, while 9th Wonder makes Roy Ayers' classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" [...]

Leonard Cohen : Suzanne [ purchase ] We speak so easily of lyrics, but music and interpretation are a big part of meaning. For example, take Suzanne , a sad tale of a second-person hero who falls in with a half-crazy temptress with a perfect body, and - as far as I can tell; Leonard Cohen's lyrical style is often oblique - catches her madness like a virus in the process. In the original version of this 1967 song, Cohen's [...]

image courtesy of Merri Cyr , 1995 Besides Grace, which was Jeff Buckley's only officially completed album, the legacy of songs and material that remain comes mainly from his incredible live shows which consisted of playing various covers from a vast array of artists. His vocal range was such that he took on many songs from powerful female singers. Many times, he took the originals and made them his own, as is the case with his version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Here are some unique covers with the originals, [...]

Since our fair city has now been crowned "Best Scene" in the latest Rollingstone (what does that even mean?) we thought, what better time to do a Baltimore mix? So here are some tunes from baltimore bands and others about Bawlmer. We tried to put in a good mix of blogged about as well as under the radar bands, so hopefully you will find something you like. We are probably leaving some great bands out, but we tried our best. So sit back, pop a Boh, eat some crabs, turn on the O's [...]

From an e-mail last night, with thanks to Jason, who made me think to write it. I took a taxi home from my friend's house tonight. Getting in, without thinking, I let out a half-sigh, half-cry, this involuntary release of joy, because he was playing Nina Simone. The driver's a quiet 50-something year old guy. He's not the chatty type, just a quick smile and looking for the address. But suddenly, we're talking about Nina, and he's excited that I love her too - there's no flush of words, but you can see [...]
