Marie-Pierre Arthur 's brand new album Aux Alentours being a fave drug at FS headquarters right now, we've got an excellent reason to throw a retrospective look over the shoulder: Actually, her self-titled 2009 debut features a lot of that distinctive Opal/ Mazzy Star feel from those Early Recordings times when Kendra Smith was still around – including the highly artful Ma tête à off, a super laidback country slow burner with a tenderly floating quality. Similarly captivating: Her version of Nino Ferrer 's 1972 smash hit La maison près de la fontaine, slightly countrified for the [...]

At the last L'Amour Electronique I gave this by ace Jocelyne track an airing: A driving beat, some ringing telecaster guitar licks, tenor sax, horns and a pocket of backing vox - it's a soulful little number alright, and not even the dubious muted trumpet solo can take the wind out of its sails. "et la la la la la" Jocelyne - La La La La La [this Jocelyne track was [...]
Nino Ferrer performs "Alexandre" & "Ho! Eh! Hein, Bon!" Live (!) on "Music-Hall de France" July 2nd, 1966. I find it amazing how cool this combo sounds with just 3 pieces, Organ, Bass & Drums, with Nino singing and playing bass. So cool. It can be found on The Bedazzled Video Hour (and a half) 2011 - "French Pop Rarities 1966-1967" . See it live at the WFMU Record Fair - Saturday, October 29

Not sure the show or date - probably 1966. maybe 1967.

When tormented Italian-French superstar Nino Ferrer met lovely Afro-American model, dancer, and singer Radiah Frye, he probably fell head over heels in love. On his 1966 single Je veux etre noir, Nino had already declared that he wanted to be black, and now he had a perfect companion to funk up his groove – exactly what he did on Nino and Radiah et Le Sud in 1974, a fine album with an even finer cover on which Radiah exposed her impeccable body to the public. Before she pursued a brief career as an actress [...]
Nino Ferrer - L'Arbre Noir (1979)

1991 was quite a remarkable year, when a certain MC Loulou (Serge's baby nickname, by the name) & Les Standardistes – the operators, for our non-native speakers ;-) – invented the art of mash-up with Gaston, y'a l'téléfon, flavoring a delirious dancefloor tune, based on Nino Ferrer's Le téléfon, with splinters from miscellaneous other Nino Ferrer tunes, from Les cornichons to Je veux être noir – a clever, weird and whacky homage to an uncompromised artist, reminiscent of the intertextual fun coolness of Dutch 80s entrepreneurs Gruppo Sportivo. MC Loulou & Les Standardistes [...]

What a wonderful year. I don't know quite how to sum it up, it's just been so completely packed full of astoundingly good music. I'm really happy with the direction everything's gone in terms of this blog and the kind of music I've been digging, and I really really appreciate all you groovy people dropping by and lapping it up. I hope it's been a help to the artists and labels behind the music too, it's so important to support and encourage the people who are responsible for all the beautiful sounds that have been floating around in 2009. It [...]

On his 1966 single Je veux être noir, Nino had already declared that he wanted to be black, and now he had a perfect playmate to tighten up his groove – exactly what he did on Nino and Radiah et Le Sud in 1974, a fine album with an even finer cover portrait on which Radiah exposed her impeccable body to the public. BOOM! TISH! BOOM! TISH! BOOM! TISH! BOOM! TISH! It's 1966, and Nino Ferrer 's rhythm-section is coming on like a pair of cavemen with a back-to-basics Kick'n'hi-hat stomp and a dirrrty old bass line. Some jazzy Hammond organ tones give it a bit of lo-fi warmth to counter Ferrer's ever-so-slightly sleazy vocal stylings, as he lists all the things he keeps losing: his uncle, his sausage, his cousin Célestin, who's an academician… Then, 54 seconds in a chimeric transformation takes place: the organist goes off on one and Nino gets gruffer and gruffer, until [...]
