The Brazilian duo The Twelves have been making quite the name for themselves over the past year, demonstrating an uncanny ability to morph nearly any classic indie rock tune into pure dance floor gold. In their Essential Mix last December, they mixed together an insane two hour set that can make any long distance car ride (or 10 miles in rush hour 405 traffic for those of us in LA) exponentially more entertaining. The following are two songs ripped straight from that mix that must be shown to the world. The Beatles [...]

In the past month there have been some really great covers emerge. Phoenix doing Bob Dylan is as good as anything on Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Jay Reatard's death brought an old cover out back to prominence, Major Lazer have added a whole new depth to a Beyonce track and lo fi indie rockers Little Girls have a stunning take on a new Beach House track. Enjoy these and please feel free to link to your favorite covers in the comments. Major Lazer - HALO (Beyonce Cover) Solange Knowles - Stillness [...]

We were thumbing through the Buzzgrinder microfiche archives, and we found this article from Matt DeBenedictis that never made it up, extolling the virtues of Shellac 's Terraform on its 10th anniversary. Even though that was a while back, we can't deprive the loyal Buzzgrinderers from this bit of nostalgia. So have at it. It's been 10 years since Shellac released their second LP, Terraform , but nothing changes about Shellac over the years. They are still juggernauts that exist between the lines of noise rock [...]

Seems like just last week I was spinning my fresh new copy of Them Crooked Vultures CD and planning to buy tickets for their show at the Paramount. Now months have flown by, and I am still regularly playing that album, and LOUD. I can confidently count that show as one of the best I saw last year, and the best rock record I heard in 2009. I'll admit, I was skeptical about the show, and I was vocal about this - I've been burned before by setting my expectations too high for the first tour of [...]
Nearly 17 years ago Pearl Jam released their 2nd album & one of the defining albums of my teenage years, VS . While the album was released in October of 1993, rehearsals started in February which is when the demos that you will, no doubt be listening to shortly, are from. In February of 1993 I was 16 years old getting fully ingratiated into the grunge scene, leaving the sounds of gangster rap that my peers were listening to in the rear view. I became a bit more of an outcast than I already was, at a [...]

Filed under: News , New Releases Bizarre musical collaborations are nothing new -- just check the pairing of David Bowie and Bing Crosby for evidence -- but 2010 has just thrown up one of the best. According to Twentyfourbit.com , Frances Bean Cobain -- the daughter of Courtney Love and the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain -- is set to make her singing debut on a track that includes contributions from My Chemical Romance 's Gerard Wa y, [...]

I recently finished re-watching the first five seasons of Lost in preparation for tonight, the premiere to the sixth and final season. I'd greatly underestimated the amount of popular music used in the series, though the total amount of songs spanning the five season still falls just shy of 50. But I guess when you've got a composer the caliber of Michael Giacchino ( Up ) at your disposal, there's not as much call for it. People still listen to music, though, and even after Hurley's batteries died, the music played on. Witness the opening [...]

LOST: The Final Season is finally here and to pay tribute to my all-time favorite show I've made what I consider to be the definitive mix of music featured on LOST. You can download the entire mix in a zip here , and read how each song is used in the show (plus which episode it appeared first) below. Feel free to use this to soundtrack your LOST premiere party tonight. I'll most likely be posting some thoughts on here as the season progresses. See you in another life, brutha.
Filed under: News , Video Nirvana versus Smashing Pumpkins in a game of Twister like you've never seen before has been found on YouTube. The hilarious three minute video see 90s grunge gods Kurt Cobain and Billy Corgan (with long hair!) joined by fellow Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins members. The bands throw Crisco -- a brand of fat used in cooking -- at each other, whilst Krist Novoselic plays stripped down to his underwear. Also in the [...]

What : Casual Victim Pile Big Names : Harlem...and a bunch of other Austin bands Cost : LP $18/CD $10 ( buy here! ) Thoughts : It has been a long time since we last saw a compilation quite like this one, especially from a source we trust with our musical devotion as much as we do Matador Records. Taking from a single region and, more times than not, a single style, Matador has put together a snapshot of what the music scene in Austin is like [...]

JD Salinger, seminal author of the seminal book 'Catcher in the Rye', has died. This prompted an outpouring of responses from every corner of society, ranging from 'we have lost a true literary icon and the purest encapsulation of man's coming of age from idealistic teenager to weary cynic' to 'Wait a minute - he wasn't dead already?' Salinger was struck down in the prime of his life, at the tender age of 91, leaving disaffected teenagers everywhere without a misanthropic shut-in to idolise. In tribute to Mr. Salinger, I present you an extra-special, Holden Caulfield-inspired list of [...]
