This one has been in waiting for longer than anybody cares to remember - but finally, Comfortable on a Tightrope have gotten their acts together, got the tracks sent off to whatever far flung pressing plant they've chosen and taken delivery of their vinyl babies. Nissenmondai are from Japan, Waiters come from these parts, and here are the tracks NISENNENMONDAI - soundtrack 4 for Nobetsumakunashi Really weird stuff, as you'd probably expect. Let it charm you, as it probably will anyway Waiters - Tomorrowland [...]
Fast year the Smalltown Supersound label clued a lot of lucky listeners outside of Japan into the wonders of the all-girl, uber rhythmic skronk rock groop Nisennenmondai, by reissuing the trio's Tori and Neji eps together on one cd (Heartworm then doing an lp version). That sure whet our appetite for more, and here it is! Destination Tokyo starts off with a real choo-choo train of a track, "

Touching down in Holland equipped with the ashamedly meagre grasp of Dutch of your typical drug tourist feels none too good. Having thumbed two phrases into the iPhone for safe keeping, neither would turn out to be in any way useful were any altercation to arise: they happened to be the gratuitous 'spreekt u Engels', and something about ordering a beer. Unable to pronounce either correctly, one coincidentally proves to be entirely incorrect and incomprehensible. A festival celebrating Canadian independent music produce in the unerringly picturesque, canal-infested Dutch haven that is Utrecht may seem somewhat [...]

"One of the better places for christmas shopping", urteilte Stephen Malkmus spasseshalber über Utrecht.

Nisennenmondai (@nisennenmondaiO) opened for Battles (@battles) Tuesday night at Webster Hall. Listening to their aggressive, evolving, and repetitive math-rock, I would never assume that the sound was coming from three small Japanese women. After the impressively intricate performance, my favorite part was still the very end. With a soft, small voice, and broken english, one of the members walked up to the microphone and expressed how grateful they were to be on tour - a pretty great moment. Over a year ago, Battles' [...]

Happy Halloween to you and you and you. I'm sitting here dressed as Ash Ketchum from Pokémon hoping that the snow storm we had on Saturday night (seriously?) wasn't the beginning of winter for us here in New York City. It's currently supposed to be chilly but nice, which is, in my opinion, the best weather for venturing out and seeing some live music. From Feist and Battles , to The Drums and Pixies , we have some extraordinary artists visiting our city this week. See below for our suggested shows of [...]

Photos of Battles and Nisennenmondai performing at the Masquerade on October 28, 2011. All photos by Moe Castro.

Two echoplexes, samplers, keyboards, John Stanier's ultral hi-hat, and an army of pedals cluttered the Mayan Theater stage for a predominantly vocal free night as Battles brought their complex time signatures to life in support of Gloss Drop . Nisennenmondai hailing from Japan impressed with their Sonic Youth like instrumental set, and the two man pairing of Walls went the ambient route with their hazy synthesizer textured tunes. Check out pics of the show above.

A teraz do [...]

American festivals are more popular than ever, with record sellouts happening across the board. Unfortunately, in 2011, the lineups of the major players are more indistinguishable than ever, thanks to a shallow pool of available headliner options and an endless regurgitation of The Black Keys, Crystal Castles, et al, with surprises and unique bookings in short supply. Especially grievous is the total absence of Pulp. The Britpop legends might be the reunion of the decade, but are currently nowhere to be seen on American shores. Thankfully, there are more attractive alternatives in Europe for the seasoned festival attendee, with the [...]

This June 1-5, Copenhagen's infamous Distortion Festival will once again take over the downtown streets, bars, cafes, clubs, and more of the beautiful Danish capital. Copenhagen Distortion is a celebration of street life and club culture, and is Old Europe's craziest annual party cavalcade, orchestrating 101+ parties in 101+ different locations with 101+ different hosts. Distortion includes massive block parties during the day that take place in the streets for free until the sun sets; and the awesome Club Clash events, late at night, in spectacular Copenhagen locations. Every day [...]

The Overnight Camp Days (from left to right): Scott, Vadim, Dan, Evan, and Mike. Yes, you are correct, that is a hemp necklace around my neck. My shame is greater than your shame. You've read my screed about how horrible NBC's The Event is, but you probably finished the article and thought to yourself, "Yeah, but how does that effect me , asshole!" Well, here's your chance to get up off your lazy ass and do something about it, shithead. Sign this petition to help get The Event canceled. [...]

If you are looking for an early pregame to your most likely Halloween-related activities this Friday night (and you reside in the Tri-State area - or serendipitously happen to be visiting the UES ), stop into to the Manhattan branch of the Asian Society for the premiere of Live From Tokyo - a documentary focusing on Edo's chaotic indie music scene. On any given night in Tokyo, there are hundreds if not thousands of bands thumping the pavement playing small venues in the interest of pushing indie music's sonic [...]
People are always asking me what new music I'm listening to. Naturally, these things are bound to happen when one reaches the forefront of the blog community. I begin by telling folks that if they are looking for good new music they are going to be disappointed, because most of it sucks right now. Usually the person asking for my advice will start crying at this point. But I will place a reassuring hand on their shoulder and tell them, honestly, that if they are searching for something cool, I can probably make a recommendation or two. I will note [...]

(Click here to view the photo large) It would be a fair call to say the crowd at Artspace last night was relatively unfamiliar to the sounds of Nisennenmondai – the Japanese all-girl and highly experimental trio. As part of SuperDeluxe and the Sydney Biennale, the three girls treated a full house to an hour of noise attributing the styles of psychedelia, Krautrock, and towards the close of their set, a recognition of Japanese pop with "ijen urusuozuos" from their 2009 LP Destination Tokyo all in a d.i.y fashion. Rolling [...]
