(Click here to view the photo large) It would be a fair call to say the crowd at Artspace last night was relatively unfamiliar to the sounds of Nisennenmondai – the Japanese all-girl and highly experimental trio. As part of SuperDeluxe and the Sydney Biennale, the three girls treated a full house to an hour of noise attributing the styles of psychedelia, Krautrock, and towards the close of their set, a recognition of Japanese pop with "ijen urusuozuos" from their 2009 LP Destination Tokyo all in a d.i.y fashion. Rolling [...]

" Just imagine ," Hitler said with awe in his voice, "a motor car that can reach speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. It's just too perfect. It's exactly what is needed in the New Order. Modern man with modern machines." He shook his head in sudden appreciation. Several of the men had stopped talking and were listening intently to their Führer's words. "At speeds such as this, a man does not have time to think, but only to react. His basic Aryan instincts take [...]

Nisennenmondai - Mirrorball ****************************** *
These chicks window shopping for guitars happen to belong to a sick new collective known as Nisennenmondai . Well, they're not new new. They formed ten years ago. But they're new to us, and their sound is definitely a delightful breath of fresh air. Nisennenmondai is a three-piece hypnotic post rock group led by three (incidentally attractive) young Japenese women... so it seems a lot of geeks' prayers were answered, no? But enough with the superficial facets, Sayaka Himeno, Yuri Zaikawa, and Masako Takada have serious chops. Somewhere between no wave, kraut, and [...]
A famous composer once said "If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all." It was probably Sting. From listening to Destination Tokyo, it is clear that Nisennenmondai are avid collectors of the pearls [...]

Nisennenmondai have just started to make an impact on U.S. audiences but they're already underground heroes in their native Tokyo. Garnering praise from members of Battles and Black Dice to Haino Keiji, they certainly have found themselves in good company. The trio specializes in hypnotic, circular rhythms that tumble and pulse with a relentlessness that threatens to tear loose at any moment. Synthesizing Krautrock influences through a gritty urban Tokyo filter, the group takes precision to an obsessive level and grinds it deep into your skull with their heels. Somehow they manage to feel jerkily danceable and rigidly discordant at [...]

Ok, this is less of a exclusive (I think we got it up first), and more about me begging to post a track from Nisennenmondai's upcoming long player (although only 5 songs, it's 44 minutes) Destination Tokyo . Well, my persistence payed dividends, because today we can share with you the title track. This is the best thing I've heard all week. I've been following this three-piece, all-girl Japanese noise-pop group since first witnessing them at CMJ 4 years ago. Yet, due to language [...]
Smalltown Supersound is proud to announce the upcoming release of Destination Tokyo, the new full-length from Nisennenmondai. Nisennenmondai are three women from Tokyo, Sayaka Himeno (drums), Yuri Zaikawa (bass) and Masako Takada (guitar), who have been playing instrumental music together since they met over ten years ago in college. The album was released on Nisennenmondai's own [...]

We were just talking Calgary in the writeup for BTW the Neighbourhood Council. It's back to Alberta again with "Willow Tree," one of 12 new songs from ex-busker Chad VanGaalen's forthcoming Soft Airplane , the follow up to 2006's Skelliconnection . He captured the new one on "an old tape machine" and JVC boom box in his Calgary basement. The album's opener "Willow Tree" is a sad, joyfully resolved and pretty sing-song that involves water-born, Viking-style burial/cremation rites, fueled by kerosene and freedom. The willow tree plays an important roll, as do the melancholic horns.
Santogold, Julian Casablancas, & Pharrell - My Drive Thru Only a halfway decent song (commissioned by Converse) but a seriously cool video. 2D paper cut outs of everyone dancing all over the place. Nice. Fleet Floxes - White Winter Hymnal Fun claymation. See if you can spot the bunny! At least I think it's a bunny... Matthew Cooper - Miniature 3 From his forthcoming (still solo) album being released under his own name (instead of Eluvium). The reason [...]

**** Nisennenmondai - Pop Group Neji/Tori ( Smalltown Supersound, 2008) + download via zshare The songs on their myspace are just as good, if not better. You might initially think that "Pop Group" is about the noise, but it's actually all about the bass. [...]
Thursday, June 12, 2008 As I begin this post the thing sitting in the back of my mind is that tonight (or tomorrow morning, if you prefer) I have to be at work at 2am to help run a broadcast. I've done it before, but it presents a weird issue when dealing with sleep. Should I take a nap? Or blow snoozing off all together? I can never decide, so this time around I'm asking you. Now provide a [...]
