With a keyboard tuned to "James-Blake-pop" and a propensity for sonic melodrama, Ramona Gonzalez is able to pick and choose what aspects of 80s pop she wishes to evoke. It's what makes Nite Jewel more than just purveyors of formulaic and simplistic low-fi dance music (if you can call it that), but unpredictable synthesizers of generic tricks of the trade. On "In the Dark," Gonzalez concocts a love ballad directed at no one-a romantic breath in the wind. It's a beautiful track off the upcoming One Second Of Love , due out in March.
The last thing we heard from LA electro songstress Ramona Gonzalez aka Nite Jewel was her hyper-minimalist, intimately confessional cover of Stevie Wonder's "Visions," but she's back to her chilly, synth-driven M.O. on the latest single from her second LP One Second of Love , "In the Dark." Over an impossibly catchy backbeat and her classic thick, shimmering planes of cold, cutting synth and piano, Gonzalez effortlessly shows off her impressive vocal range. That's not to say Gonzalez has abandoned the personal emotionality of her Stevie Wonder cover – "In the Dark" feels like she's whispering it [...]

Here's a new slow jam from Nite Jewel to set the mood for your hump day evening. Another cut from Gonzalez's upcoming album One Second of Love entitled "In The Dark". The album comes out March 6th.

On her first couple of releases, Nite Jewel's astral explorations in synth-pop imagined a space-age lounge, the kind of dive George Jetson might escape to in his flying car to drown his sorrows after a family squabble. Songstress Ramona Gonzalez's forthcoming release for Secretly Canadian, "One Second of Love," is not the stuff of gin joints; the album (due March 6) is a sophisticated, still-futuristic take on electronic R&B that fuses deep grooves and her increasingly sultry vocals. Gonzalez seems to have a lot to say about matters of the heart, and on this album she comes through [...]

Zone-out city. Nite Jewel (aka Ramona Gonzalez) is a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles that's responsible for my inability to process any thoughts whatsoever. I don't know what it is about "In The Dark", but it pretty much makes me go comatose. Is that a compliment? I think so. [via Pitchfork] Tweet

Los Angeles' Julia Holter has become something of a name dropper when talking about Los Angeles' current experimental music scene. This DIY artist is making bedroom pop that sounds like music coming from a church choir. "In the Same Room" has a haunting synth in the background, Holters' voice spits out staccato-like phrases, and ambient chords breaks barriers throughout the song.

"Visions" , a non-single from Stevie Wonder's 1973 Grammy-winning opus Innervisions , may not be one of the musical genius' most oft-referenced cuts, but like nearly everything else Stevie put to tape in that decade, its hard to argue against its status as a classic with everything from its gorgeous R&B simmer to Wonder's still-poignant pondering over whether the idyllic, hate-free utopia that exists in his dreams could ever be achieved in real life helping rank it high as one of his many great creations. In honor of Lauren Abramson, the late sister [...]
