What's most striking to me about Rodney Crowell is how much of a mover and shaker he was in the country music scene during the mid-to-late 1970s right on through the 1980s.

I've been busy planning a party for the past week or so and need a break from all the upbeat music so today's Five For Friday is going to slow it down. For those not familiar with Madeleine Peyroux she is my favorite romantic dinner or chill out music. Also don't forget to enter the MaryKate O'Neil contest , I'll be drawing a winner in a few days. Also, like everyone else out there, I've had a post deleted, not even sure why. I made a deal with myself that if 5 posts get killed [...]

I've been in Ohio for a funeral since Friday and was able to hang with my folks in Columbus, OH. It got me thinking about the songs my dad would play on long road trips when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure that my taste for twang and love of alt-country is a result of my old man playing Willie, Waylon, Cash, Alabama and John Denver in the car on family vacations. Back in 1984, "Long Hard Road" by They Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was my favorite song. I wore the shit out of Plain Dirt [...]

Before I started this blog, I probably wouldn't have listened to The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Luckily I've grown and expanded my musical taste or I would have missed a whole lot of great music. MP3 File

Today is a trip back in time. This first song is from 1970's Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy. This amazing album is a combination of so many styles of music, but my favorite is the fiddles and that jug band sound. Oh yeah, Mr. Bojangles is on this album. MP3 File

It's kind of a shame the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is best known for an album that isn't really theirs. Will The Circle Be Unbroken is a landmark bluegrass recording organized by the NGDB, but the main draw are performances by legends like Maybelle Carter and Earl Scruggs and the songs are mostly traditional. To get to the heart of what the real Dirt Band were all about, you have to look past the 'tribute' album, delving into the solid string of albums leading up to it (and beyond), especially this excellent 1970 outing released just [...]

When you are sad and lonely, and have no place to go, Call me up, sweet baby, and bring along some dough... Honky Tonkin' is a straightforward honky-tonk hit. One of my favorite Hank Williams songs. There's really nothing to the words, and the melody is very basic, but Hank still made it a classic. Here are four cover versions of Honky Tonkin' and a live version by Hank: Joe Ely - Honky Tonkin' (mp3) ( buy album ). The Nitty Gritty Dirt [...]
