Key Losers is the Portland, Oregon-based project of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Katy Davidson, ex-Dear Nora, YACHT collaborator, etc. Her airy, sunny, graceful, impressively patchwork first official Key Losers full-length California Lite follows a 2009 "mini-album" Adjust . She's joined on it by the "Key Losers Black Crow Session Band," a group of collaborators featuring Karl Blau (saxophone), Total Noise's Greg Campanile (percussion) and
Tom Filardo (lead guitar, vocals
), LAKE's
Andrew Dorsett (bass and vocals) and Eli Moore (vocals), and No Kids' Nick Krgovich (keyboards and vocals)
. It was engineered by Phil Elverum, who captured the 12 songs "almost [...]

No Kids - This Regrettable End [Parenthetical Girls] | zs Parenthetical Girls - Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans) [OMD] | zs We celebrate our 2nd birthday with a mini Parenthetical Girls special, since they were the stars of our very first post. Thank you for listening!

I've been contemplating doing something for Valentine's Day for years, and I finally settled on something good - a massive post packed with great singles from the past. Seems fitting, being the romantic holiday can be a bit alienating for the single person. Or that the seemingly comfy nature of the 7-inch single, with two (well, typically, with an occasional three or four) great songs placed back to back and stuffed in a typically well-designed sleeve, is a bit romantic in and of itself. So for the past few weeks, [...]

A few days ago, No Kids / Gigi leader Nick Krgovich dropped a free holiday EP under the pseudonym Chris Mastheim. (Don't get the pun? Say it out loud.) The EP is called Chris Mastheim Is Here . Go to Exclaim! for my brief article about the release. Even though I'm a day late for Christmas, I'm still going to post his cover of "Christmastime Is Here" (the classic from A Charlie Brown Christmas ). The synth backing is based on the Twin Peaks [...]
Arcade Fire have announced that they'll match any donations made to KANPE , a Haitian Aid organization, up to a million bucks. To make your $5 donation just text STAND to 30333 (KANPE means "to stand" in Haitian Creole). A million bucks! I wonder if that's any indication of how pre-sale of The Suburbs is going. Their much anticipated new album drops on August 3 and can be pre-procured from the band's online store now. MP3: Arcade Fire "The [...]

It's been a few months since I threw together a podcast, so I figured it was about time for another one. Besides, I've been working diligently on a mix-tape for a new local pal, Brett Sandström, whom I met after purchasing a Tullycraft single on eBay - he being the seller, both of us being astonished to find other Tullycraft fans in Skagit County. What began as a modern tribute to light garage pop ultimately changed direction to hint at songs that fit a sweltering, hot summer day. This is [...]

We've talked about the 'Kids' phenomenon in names before; from Black Kids to Cool Kids to Dead Kids and today's post, No Kids. These Kids are from Canada and although they've only released only one album back in 2008 (Come Into my House), they are better know under the P:ano name (which hosts all 3 members of No Kids with one more addition) under which they have released 5 albums from 2001 till 2005. Judy at the Grove is their latest EP which is more or less on the same vibe as their debut album. Laid back tunes, warm relaxed [...]

As far as one-off side projects go, they don't get much better than Gigi . The band is led by former p:ano /current No Kids songwriter Nick Krgovich, who recruited a massive cast of supporting musicians for the retro pop opus Maintenant , released earlier this year. K Records recently released a 73 single of "The Hundredth Time," which is a horn-laden, harmony-drenched AM soul throwback. It's magical and mopey in equal doses, with a stunning chorus that complains, "I'm leaning on a lamppost outside the party / And crying [...]

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: I don't really know anything about the Calgary Folk Festival (even though it has been around over 30 years), but if you live in Canada you should consider going next month just to see the "arranged marriage" that they've put together for 2010. It's Annie Clark of St. Vincent with Man Man. Wow. I honestly can't imagine what those two will create onstage. Get more info on the CFF here. Another five-songer! This one has a few [...]
Vancouver indie pop outfit No Kids recently released the funkified new EP Judy at the Grove . You can read my review of the disc over at the Georgia Straight . Here's the EP's opening song, the quasi-title track "At the Grove." It's a sweet piano pop tune with a lazy summer-by-the-pool vibe. It sounds like something that could have appeared on either of the last two Belle & Sebastian albums. ("Judy at the Grove and the Dream of Horses" anyone?) The strings, horns and harmonies build [...]

Usually when I make these mixes, I'm either making the artwork the night before they're supposed to go up or waiting on whichever friend I've conned into doing the artwork for me. Either way, the actual mix is done. Not so this time. My friend Greg sent this to me last week and I built the mix around it. Pretty killer art, I think, clever, and not only screams Summer Fridays but also Sound Bites' food-and-music modus operandi. Definitely one of my favorite covers ever and a call for future mix cover designers to step up their game. This one's definitely on [...]
A couple weeks ago Bill over at Sound Bites did a ' trend piece' on the subject of the current wave of soft rock. He could be onto something, because this new No Kids EP is right up that alley. A few months ago Nick Krgovich unveiled Maintenant which was his excellent project in the vein of the Sixths and God Save the Girl . Now he's back to his day job as leader of No Kids, one of his other bands. No Kids' 2008 debut album [...]

a weakness for pretty things never hurt nobody, no ♫ No Kids - I Want To Be Around Horns! Bass! Oooh-ooohhs! It's a trifecta of smooooth operating that is sure to set the mood! No wonder they named their band No Kids. Anyway, this Vancouver trio already have a well received album under their belts but I've just heard of them. "I Want To Be Around" is from their May 25th EP, Judy At The Grove, which will hopefully feature [...]

If you've been following the doings of Vancouver, BC's Nick Krgovich, you know he's been a busy fellow. Maintenant by Gigi has garnered substantial hype this year and the band's debut LP certainly warrants the attention. Krgovich is back under the guise of No Kids , whose last release joined together sounds not typically associated with pop music. Despite recording a 60s do-wop pop record under Gigi and performing under the P:ano moniker since the band's last release, Come Into My House , [...]

So there are many cool events happening around Budapest these days. In fact, this weekend is gonna be one of the coolests. On friday, the Lamantin guys host a party with Mount Eerie (whose 2008 album with Julie Doiron made it into Kunk's bests ) and No Kids . Mount Eerie is touring their last LP, Wind's Poem which is haunting dream with such a desperate voice failing to hold on to anything that it kinda casts you into inner darkness. The chaotic lo-fi experimentalism and the amazing singing-songwriting talent meet in [...]
With a name that is easily confused with the pop artist of the same name, Ladyhawk is a confident and devilishly amazing rock band formed in 2004. Their 2008 album, Shots has an "off the stage" feel and vigor that is reminiscent of the band's powerful live performances. Rooted from the recording sessions, everything bred from and expanded from there. The record packs grit while allowing the bands infectious energy and vulnerability to flow freely. In 2008 the band was nominated for a CBC Award for Best Live Act, one of Canada's highest honors in the [...]

Still Burning - Mister Modo et Ugly Mac Beer avec Jessica Fitoussi Weight Watchers - Parallel Dance Ensemble Heart Attack (Miami Horror Remix) - Faker I work for a livin - Fonzi Thornton Cette chanson ressemble à ce que faisaient Hot Chip sur leur premier album quand ils ne faisaient pas encore trembler les murs des plus grandes salles mais faisaient encore du R&B bancal dans leur cuisine. Πίσω στο μακρινό 2008 ο κύριος Nick Krgovich , εγκέφαλος των Καναδών No Kids κυκλοφόρησε ένα υπέροχο pop άλμπουμ με τίτλο Come Into My House το οποίο μας άρεσε πάρα πολύ εδώ στη Χειμερινή Ακαδημία, πέρασε όμως σχεδόν απαρατήρητο.
