Last weekend saw the Camden Crawl festival land in Dublin for the first time, with two nights of music spread across the city. State was on hand to report on the event and here's our pick of the acts from home and abroad. And So I Watch You From Afar - Button Factory, Friday Few bands seem to get better and better every time you see them live, but ASIWYFA are made of special stuff. New guitarist Niall Kennedy has filled the very big shoes of Tony Wright with aplomb, splicing [...]
If you're looking for a band that lives somewhere between Fresh and Onlys and Wavves , then let me introduce you to No Monster Club ! The group came to my attention as I was following one of my favorite smaller labels, CF Records . They've recently helped this Irish trio put out a small small run of their newest LP, Dublin , and it's a pretty solid introduction to the band. Below you'll find a rambunctious bit of garage pop filled [...]
Having released their superb album Dublin a few weeks back, No Monster Club have dropped a short and snappy video for 'Waking My Idols'. 'Waking My Idols' encapsulates everything that makes NMC so great, catchy pop melodies, spiky vocals and thrashy reverbed guitars all wrapped up in a little over a one minute bundle of outstanding punky surf rock. There are very [...]

On Saturday night I broke my abstinence from live music events by going to No Monster Club's launch of their new indie-pop album Dublin. They were supported by a google-proof band called "the #1s" who I missed, and the fine Big Monster Love (no relation, named before them) who played some of his intimate songs that contemplate life from a sideways, slightly wonder-struck perspective. The gig, like so many these days, was not in a licensed venue, but one of those artists' 'spaces' that might have been an old [...]

No Monster Club From: Dublin, Ireland Dublin lo-fi popsters No Monster Club (first featured on the blog in February last year, The Devils Round Up 27th February 2011 ) are back with their new album, Dublin . This is a band who understand that brevity is the soul of the true pop song with most of the album tracks managing to provide more joy in less than two minutes than U2 have delivered in their entire career. Dublin sounds [...]

Longstanding BarryGruff favourites No Monster Club, are set to release a brand new album on March 23rd on 12″ vinyl through CF Records. Simply titled Dublin, the 10 track album was recorded near Kildare's Hill Of Allen (or what's left of it) with Newbridge producer and all round good guy, Poggy Dillon. A new No Monster Club album is out on March 23rd on 123 vinyl through CF Records . With the title as simply - Dublin , it will be Bobby Aherne's 14th release in his discography of various bands. It's not just Aherne though, on record as well as live he's joined by his GPO bandmates. The 10 tracks that make up Dublin were recorded in a proper studio for once near Kildare's mighty Hill Of Allen with Poggy Dillon, a mythical place that fits in with Aherne's daytime job as [...]

Quarter Inch's Quompilation is back for #2 in the series of Irish artists covering their favourite songs of 2011. For my money, Volume 2 is a better collection of covers all round than Volume 1 there are some cracking versions. Cloud Castle Lake cover Jacques Greene's 'Another Girl' , No Monster Club do Jedward's 'Lipstick' an amazing service, Logikparty rock the John Maus look, Girl Band take on The Chemical Brothers while The Ambience Affair tackle Metronomy. Check out the full 11-track collection of songs. The launch night takes [...]

Last month, October 22nd to be precise witnessed the second 'Barrygruff Presents' show in Flanagan's, Newbridge. It was another huge success on all fronts. The place was packed to the bloody rafters, it was hard to believe it was only a Thursday night. Both performances from No Monster Club and We Are Losers were fantastic, [...]

Fresh from storming sets at Leeds Festival and Castlepalooza this summer, We Are Losers bring their glorious lo-fi fuzz pop to Flanagan's, Newbridge this Thursday, September [...]
As Japan continues to deal with the aftermath of the recent string of tragedies - earthquake, tsunami, aftershocks and nuclear issues - people from around the world have stepped up in all kinds of ways to raise awareness and funds. Organised by State's Photo Editor Loreana Rushe , the music community of Ireland have rallied together for a benefit night to raise relief donations and to maintain awareness for the cause - all proceeds will go to Aid Japan. The event takes place this Saturday, May 7th in Dublin's Twisted Pepper. There will be two [...]

No Monster Club is the brainchild of Irish indie rocker Bobby Aherne. Previously releasing music under the name Dublin Duck Dispensary, word is that Aherne records everything in his bedroom. That's probably not entirely true (every lo-fi indie songwriter allegedly records in his "bedroom"), but it's still impressive that a noisy, chaotic bundle of frantic energy like "The Last Bottle in the World" was produced by one guy. Few bands can play at this tempo and not have the song fall apart, but Aherne pulls it off. No Monster Club's EP, Young Guts Champion , is available [...]

The lack of broadcasting outlets for music videos in this country hasn't done much to quash the creativity of the directors and bands looking to match their music to great visuals. Here are three great recent examples. No Monster Club - 'The Last Bottle In The World' (premiere) The world's first 'wigglegram' music video according to the band. If you're wondering why the video seems distinctly non-Irish (due to the presence of sunshine perhaps) then yes, you got it. The video which uses thousands of still photographs was [...]
