Normally I'd start this review off like any other, but in the case of Cinder and Spatter, by The Black Neck Band Of The Common Loon, I must immediately delve into the soupy, rich miasma that is "Lava Tides." While ... Continue reading

[Live at Glasslands in April 2011. Photo courtesy of EardrumNYC ] Warming us up for Howlin' Rain's set of modern classic rock two Wednesdays ago at Brooklyn Bowl was another band led by a musician of varied talents that draws its inspiration from an earlier time. D. Charles Speer & the Helix frontman Dave Shuford is also a player in No Neck Blues Band , the avant-garde New York-based improvisational collective that traffics in free jazz, experimental folk and noise rock, but the Speer clan travels the seemingly more familiar [...]

In mooi [...]
Time for some early NNCK material: Cosmos comes from their album Letters From The Earth . It may or may not be a reworking of the Coltrane piece of the same title - if it is, I can't hear it. It may also have been taken from one of their semi-famous New York rooftop sessions. I rather hope it was - this is the sort of sound you can imagine emanating from an urban roof. In the right conditions, the wind howling through vents and ripping past aerials has something of the unworldly [...]

Another sweet WFMU Record Fair find. A sealed copy of this improvised live double LP (recorded in 1998 in a forest in Canada) set me back $25. Technically the full title is No Neck Blues Band Meets The Clear People with Mystery Gypped Live At Ken's Electric Lake , but that seems unnecessarily long to me. In short, it's NNCK with members of Sunburned Hand Of The Man. D.M. Edwards over at Pop Matters reviewed the CD reissue in 2008 writing, "Over the course of the two discs the few inevitable moments of dullness are [...]
Mssr. Hornet Montana totally changed the operating system on my laptop last night while everyone was engrossed in Pig Hunt . Now I don't know what's what anymore. I know that I can officially use Google Chrome now as my web browser, but I don't know what works and what doesn't work anymore. Also there's a little menu on my screen that tells me how much RAM is in use right now. It's all very new and scary to me. But that's not the point right now! Today was the first day of the WFMU Record Fair [...]

Some time in the mid-'90s the No-Neck Blues Band pressed a super-limited series of 83 lathe-cut records. Each one was made in an edition of 50 copies or less. A lot of them included hand-drawn artwork by band members that was pasted to slabs of wood measuring 83x83. All of the information such as titles and catalog numbers were hand-written. For a while they were demanding huge sums of money on eBay, but I haven't seen any available for a while. I guess everyone who wanted a copy got theirs. It's not like there were many to go around. They [...]

Our next series of q and also a comes from the duo of James and Brett from experimental gameboyDS noise outfit Endless Endless Endless . q: What is the last song you (really) heard? j: I have been going through a big Arvo Pärt phase right now and I'm loving his stuff, the only problem is the huge changes in decibels don't work so well when i am on the train. I like the music to be louder then the talking of other people so when the [...]

the first thing you'll notice is all the unthinking cunts. the throwaway sluts. the casual bitches. so perfunctory in it's masculinity. then, the infinitely limited expression of male/female connections. it's jon's flashbulb spraying light over uneager flesh. it's rob, bored, slotting in the d.v. it's steve with the boom, hovering peripheral like cuckolded husband. it's nothing more than what is called for. it's reduction, to zero. it's walking and breathing and speaking, unthinking. it's electricity not channeled and destroying, aimless, joyless and when all is said and done, unnecessary. it's something beautiful, divided into twenty minute scenes and broken down by holes and [...]
The four-piece band sang of serving Christ and Satan, being purified by the fire of latter and given life by the water of the former; Armageddon—Abaddon—and repentance, Jehovah’s strength and Lucifer’s light; and of the Process’ appropriately Old Testament-y prophecy of the end of the world. Unlike the Old Testament, when the world is in flames, blood runs in the streets and we’re plagued by pestilence, hatred and misery, Processians “shall conquer fear with love.” I’m glad my new religion is so awesome.
There's been a serious lack of NNCK in Doklands these past few years. For those not in the know, the No-Neck Blues Band are a Harlem-based bunch of loft-dwelling improvisers. They're as likely to play free jazz as free noise, avant-folk as shamanistic psychedelia. It's the last of those that features most heavily on their 2002 release, Intonomancy , which makes it unusually accessible for an NNCK record. (And no, I have no idea why they abbreviate their name in that way. No-one seems to.) Witch is actually rather pleasant listening, [...]

This is the video for No-Neck Blues Band's "Ialas Salandiw" and, expectedly, it's some crazy shit. Nothing's exposed correctly, lots of analog visual distortion with mind melting colors, and there's these freaky possessed ninja grasshopper puppets. The end is pretty terrifying. Watch it if you dare.
