Mixtape: Twelve Bay Area Highlights from 2011 (Podcast #263) We might be biased, but, from this vantage point, 2011 reconfirmed that the Bay Area continues to have the most vibrant music community nationwide. The SF scene cranked out a ton of amazing albums this year, and our final podcast of 2011 highlights twelve great releases from Bay Area artists over the past twelve months. This isn't a "Best of" list per se, but these acts did create some of our favorite music in 2011. We'll be doing more year-in-review coverage over the next few [...]

Last weekend in Big Sur, Woodsist Records and (((folkYEAH!))) teamed up to present the sublimely wonderful 2011 Woodsist Fest . These photos showcase most of the many bands that played at the Fernwood Resort and Henry Miller Library, but they just can't come close to capturing the natural beauty of Big Sur that enveloped the weekend. Musically, the highlights were many. The new Real Estate songs have me really excited about the new record. The [...]
Here's a video from Dunes , the LA trio featuring ex-Mika Miko member Kate Hall. The affiliation is relevant for purposes of fingering their track "Tied Together"'s sound - female-fronted post-punk with less spike, more wooze - and the cameos in its iPhone-cam video, a Google+ circle's worth of friends from Mika Miko's old Smell-y scene and others to boot: spot the faces from No Age, Vivian Girls, Abe Vigoda, High Places, Telepathe, Cold Showers, Nodzzz, Bleached, Pangea, Shannon and the Clams, and Devon Williams Band. Interview with singer/guitarist Anthony Atlas
Nodzzz were a strange gateway band in to my San Francisco life. I stumbled across their gawky, angular power pop in the rushed moments before I moved my entire life, and their buck-toothed squalor seemed to fit my own awkward transition. After the sheer joy of their self-titled 123 on What's Your Rupture, it's been [...]

Thee Oh Sees also mine a rich seam of 60s infused garage-psych and I Need Seed comes from new album Castlemania . [...]

"Heyday Past Heyday Due" is the latest single from Nodzzz's new LP Innings on Woodsist Records . The record is out now and can be picked up here Heyday Past Heyday Due Time (What's It Gonna Do?)

NODZZZ - "Time (What's It Going to Do?)" Innings is the excellent new album from SF trio NODZZZ , out today on Woodsist . The record's nervy, poppy jangle feels timeless in the best possible way. If you'd discovered Innings as a cassette 20 years ago, it would've sounded great, and I think someone discovering it 20 years from now will feel that same immediacy. Via e-mail, NODZZZ's Anthony Atlas shared some insights about approaching the new record, the band's [...]

Nodzzz return to the fold with their longest release to date, packed full of their delightfully itchy brand of jangle-pop. Adjusting their horn rims securely on their noses, the boys pick out 12-string nerd rock odes to therapy, relationships, second hand clothes and anxiety that squirm comfortably in their power pop shoes. Its hard not to be charmed by Nodzzz, they seem the most unlikely of rock stars and that familiarity is exactly what draws them closer on each listen. They get in, get out and get stuck in your head all under 2 minutes. Download: [...]
One look at the band name Nodzzz and you can get some idea of what you're in for. There's something of Wavves in there, but the stuttered z's are a little sillier, a little goofier, a little more approachable. The San Fransisco jangle-masters prove to be just that, their sound riding the indie pop waves, but without that same edge or personality. Guitarist/singers Sean Paul Presley and Anthony Atlas, and drummer Brian Girgus produce quick bursts of sunny, effortless power-pop that sometimes fails to stick out for very long. Now, four years after their breakout with [...]

MP3 "Time (What's It Gonna Do?)" is from Nodzzz's forthcoming album, Innings . It's the band's 2nd LP, and their first for Woodsist . Though this track may seem short, it's no anomaly on Innings . Most of what's here comes and goes in a flash. It's tough to make an impression in such a short amount of time, but the band's bright personality and sunburned lyrics make much of what's here memorable. In a way, it kinda reminds me of the hyperactive pop punk of the Evaporators , but [...]

Tweet Live This Month: March 2011 (Episode 244) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. As South by Southwest approaches later in March, bands are hitting the road, crisscrossing the US before converging on Austin. What this means for Bay Area music fans is a ton of buzz-backed touring bands stopping in SF, and equally promising locals playing some final shows [...]

Tweet Nodzzz - "Time (What's It Going to Do?)" Before they head out on a European tour with The Mantles, Nodzzz is playing a handful of California dates. Tonight's show at The Knockout (9pm, $8) - the group's last SF show prior to touring - is a doozy, with Nodzzz joined by the also terrific Personal & The Pizzas and Tim Cohen's Magic Trick . Check it out! [...]

It was the week that finally saw the long overdue collapse of the White Stripes. (Face it, they were done by the time Elephant reared it's all too crowd-pleasing, demographic cow catching head to a trend spotting pop coalition of the willing). Other big things happening this weekend, with Exrays' release party tonight at Café Du Nord with Tim Cohen's Magick Trick, and Sugar and Gold playing the Rickshaw Stop Saturday. Also, SF Indiefest is in full swing. But here are the things effecting th...
