And now something special, Skeletons (whom you may know as Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys, Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities, or Skeleton$ ) have a new LP, The Bus , which was recorded with a 20+ piece big band/chamber orchestra comprised of members various NYC underground bands including: Little Women , Extra Life , PC Worship , Starring , Tune Yards , NOMO , and The Dreebs , among others (collectively known as Skeleton$ Big Band ). Every Friday, I pick out four great new music picks from the best of the music blogosphere as part of my Day & Night internet section. Follow Day & Night on Twitter or Facebook . It's out today in print with every copy of the Irish Independent. Light Asylum Coming across like Devo in full 'Whip It' mode, the agitated wonky pop of 'IPC' from this Brooklyn via Berlin band's (too much cool right?) Mexican Summer label debut is odd and compelling, [...]
Wild Belle "Keep You" I almost don't want to encourage listening to Wild Belle's "Keep You" because its so damn catchy. "Keep You" is like a dream-pop song with elements of reggae and a little ska, a combination I wouldn't have though would work until I actually listened to it in action. Wild Belle is the Chicago brother-sister (I think?) duo of Natalie and Elliot Bergman . So far the only songs they've released are [...]
The world of new music is a very impatient place to hang out. It's like the London Underground at rush hour, or the taxi rank at the end of a Saturday evening's bar crawl. Everyone is keen to be first, or at the very minimum not to be last, please anything but last. There's a clamour to cover artists when a hot new track appears on the horizon, especially when it's as hot as today's. Just look here at The Guardian's refusal to wait for a second track, or our UK blog bros, My Bands Better Than Your [...]
With In Tall Buildings visit to Stone House Recording - we welcomed our second Chicago band to the studio. Despite being one man down(san bass player), In Tall Buildings delivered and landed a solid punch. We think you'll agree. In Tall Buildings is the brain child of Erik Hall - a University of Michigan grad and member of the post-Afrobeat group NOMO. But don't expect that here. The Chicago Reader says of the ITB self titled debut album: '. . .spacious, handcrafted pop, awash in synthesizers, reverb, and [...]
At diychi.org , bands perform at sustainable venues throughout the city, from garages to backyards to lofts. The DIY collective holds shows on almost every day of the week consisting mostly of sets from the DIY punk/hardcore/metal ilk, and they're cheap and full of young bands eager to bang on their instruments for 20 minutes or so wherever they can. Waterworks, down on the south side of the loop near Printer's Row, is essentially some dudes' 3rd floor apartment, complete with personal effects and toiletries in the bathroom, a fully stocked fridge right near the precariously wobbly PA speakers [...]
Sounding like a bastard cross between Slapshot and Blitz; Creem features members of Nomos and Natural Law.The Demo is four songs of some good old- fashioned Boston Hardcore. The vocals really are some of the best I have heard in a while, If you don't believe me then check out the first track "Sick Of You". Make sure to pick up their new 73 through Katorga Works. GET CREEM'd!!! If our in the New York then come down to 538 Johnson tonight for their 73 release show with Nazi Dust, Brain Slug and Nailed Shut. More info here . Four [...]
Words by Brendan Being somewhat new to this whole blogging thing, I still feel surprised and honored that people choose to send me their music. I guess music is art and people want to share their creations, you know? Sometimes I don't really like what I hear, though, but I still get that tingle of ... I don't know, joy almost-a common bond over the human experience. But it's even better when someone says, "Hey, listen to this. I made it. You'll like it!" and I find myself saying, "You know what? Yes, yes [...]
In Tall Buildings | photo by Elise Bergman March is finally here. You know what that means? Spring is in the air, snow is melting on the ground and pedestrians are spraining their ankles in newly formed potholes. Anyway, let's get on with our picks for this weekend's top shows, shall we... Being that it's football season here in Big Ten country, I might as well write about Rich Rodriguez's failure of a team (even if only indiretly and somewhat unrelated to the actual content of this post. What I really want to say is Nomo is a band from Ann Arbor, Michigan (which I won’t hold against them as I can only assume an affiliation to the University of Michigan in some form or another) and plays some killer jazz-funk afro-beat stuff that sounds a little like Stereolab meeting a less skronky version of Ken Vandermark at sun-soaked Carnival [...]
I waslucky to catch Afro-beat band NOMO at Union Pool this week at the end of a mini-tour with their new lineup; the most notable addition being Natalie Bergman on keys and percussion. It's pretty easy for a band to jump on the Fela Kuti-inspired groove-wagon, but NOMO's sexy-smooth, slightly frenzied style help them pull it off. For a Tuesday night, Union Pool was packed with casual and hardcore fans alike, busting a move to create Dance Party non-USA. Rather than settling comfortably for cookie-cutter jazz/funk, NOMO inject their sound with electronic blips and the kalimba, [...]

This past weekend was the first club crawl-styled Hopscotch Music Festival in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Three days, around 130 bands, 10 venues, and one large outdoor stage, we were impressed. Hopscotch organizers Greg Lowenhagen and Grayson Currin did a fantastic job planning this festival and while we’re sure they had their share of freak-outs over the weekend, as attendees, it seemed to run pretty smoothly and we had a blast. Thursday we checked into the Sheraton downtown (which was great and was in walking distance to everything) [...]

Would love to hear him do even more of this spare, stripped down music. ++ The Avalanches' latest LP has been delayed because much like their last album they use a ton of samples (3,500 last time!), and oh those samples, they take time to clear. ++Ann Arbor's Nomo are described by some as Congotronic-esque trancefunk and by others as [...]
