Nomo - New Tones The funkiest album on the list, Michigan-based Nomo take their cue from the Congolese band, Konono N°1 , respectively appropriating their percussive tribal sound to the Northern Hemisphere. Extending that ethos with breakneck brass, organ and guitar to produce a post-Afrobeat sound - the songs on instrumental New Tones are refreshlingly effervescent. Definitely a live act I'd like to see hit these shores sometime in 2007. MP3s: Nu Tones [...]

If you feel like dancing, I'd highly recommend putting a copy of the latest NOMO record, Nu Tones on the stereo and turning it way up. The Ann Arbor based band plays some great polyrhythmic Afrobeat with free jazz influences that is punctuated by sharp brass stabs and a funky low-end. And while I'm not really schooled in this type of music, I do know that it is ridiculously good. "NOMO performs a style of Afrobeat heavier on the jazz influences (without neglecting the funk or African [...]

Band leader Elliot Bergman describes their sound as "We blend minimalist keyboard loops, fuzzed-out bass, soulful group vocals, and rolling blasts from an electric mbira,†explains an enthusiastic Bergman. “Throw in a horn-led midnight funeral procession and [...]
I've been neglecting to tell you guys when new episodes of Contrast Podcast hit the airwaves (usually on Tuesdays) - and I'm still very much a big part of it. In order to redeem myself to Tim and the fine folks who work with me to put this altogether every week, I have to at least show some love. Anyway, the theme for this episode is Instrumentals with Sung Intros and it just gave me the
FMGT got me turned onto the new Nomo disc. Ubiquity has been lights out so far this year with the release of both Darondo's Let My People Go and Nino Moschella 's The Fix. Nomo's sophmore release, New Tones is just as good. In the Breakstra style the Ann Arbor based group creates big beats powered by home-made Detroit electronics and huge horn sections. The result is a big band funk and riotous jazz sound. [...]

I don't normally post so many songs at once but I'm in a buoyant mood and I've been listening to these songs a lot which may have helped. This music combined with being off work today and a busy weekend ahead taking in Saturday at Oxegen has probably attributed to my sunny disposition. Plus Animal Collective and the Go! Team are playing and I only got a ticket yesterday so it's fresh anticipation that's got me in a good mood. If anybody is in Limerick tonight, head along to the Trinity Rooms where Super Extra Bonus Party will [...]
Beautiful Friday in NYC so why not post a little post-Afrobeat to get the weekend rolling. Nomo are a transcultural ensemble who hail from Ann Arbor, Michigan and if likembe (finger piano), hand claps and scorching horns are your thing you should definitely check out New Tones, their second LP and first for Ubiquity.
