Did You Hear? :: A convicted murderer (who reportedly has a tattoo of Justin Bieber ) allegedly hired two men to castrate and kill the pop star. Dana Martin — who is serving two life terms — is said to have hired Mark Staake and his nephew to carry out the hit when Bieber was in New York City for his Madison Square Garden Shows. Staake was arrested in Vermont and his nephew made it to NYC with pruning shears before getting nabbed. [ AOL Music ] :: Palate cleanser! [...]

We laughed, we cried, we listened to a shit-ton of music this year. Given our varied tastes in music (Norah Jones! Psychedelic electro! Frank Ocean!) it was hard to pin down a definitive Top 5, so we at Death and Taxes composed our personal favorites of the year. Here are our collective 25 favorite records of 2012, in no particular order. Bat for Lashes: “The Haunted Man” Natasha Khan arose from a deep cloud of writer's block to emerge victorious with her [...]

This year's Grammy nominees were announced last Wednesday, and I've only just recovered from my yawning fit long enough to discuss them. Seriously, in keeping with my waning interest in all things Grammy-related in recent years, I forget all about the nominations on December 5 and didn't even bother to read about them until two days after they were revealed. It's been years since I've watched a Grammy telecast in its entirety, partly because it's harder to do when you're living abroad, but mostly because a few highlights aside -- like Pink's acrobatic performance of "Glitter in [...]

For the uninitiated, Record Store Day 's normally celebrated every Spring. It's a day where music lovers will purposefully trek to their favorite record shops - preferably the independent "mom & pop" spots - and partake in consuming the very music they obsess over. It's become a "thing" over the years, with special edition albums in all shapes and sizes commemorating this day; some of the larger shops even have bands drop by for performances. One RSD a year just hasn't been enough, as for the second year in a row, they've added Black Friday to their [...]
Where else will you find, side by side by side, new reissues of Miles Davis' Porgy and Bess, Nirvana's 1992 compilation Incesticide, and the Fat Boys' Pizza Box album - packaged in (yes) a pizza box? Yep. Welcome back, Record Store Day! Special release items will include exclusives as well as music that will see preview release on November 23, [...]

Everything Norah Jones does is perfection in my book. She is a classic, even though she's the furthest from a classic (in a good way). The holiday joy comes early this year with her FREE iTunes Single of the Week, the holiday classic, "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear." Grab it for FREEEEEE HERE via iTunes, duh!!! & if you haven't picked up her latest gem, "Little Broken Hearts" do it now HERE ... Listen below: [...]

In April, we heard a few remixes of Norah Jones's Little Broken Hearts cuts by TVOTR figurehead Dave Sitek. Today, we have a pair of new tracks that feature that same dynamic, where Sitek lends his hands to versions of "Good Morning" and "Take It Back." Both tracks can be found on Norah's Record Store Day release and you can hear them below. Read More...

Yeah, we've posted about this album before, but it is pretty rad so I'm going to post about it again. Though this time it's about one song instead of the entire album and surprise surprise: Norah Jones sings it. Apparently, I have a thing for her ??? This is actually one of my favourite songs ever that she's been a part of. The sombre mood of the old west that underlies the song is just wonderful, and it gives it a very hazy, dream-like flow. Point is, it's grand and it gives me a chance to [...]

This week sees the release of the utilitarianly titled Banks , the first solo release under his own name by Interpol singer Paul Banks. It's not his first solo release, though — Banks has already put out an album and an EP under the pseudonym Julian Plenti. He appears to have retired the alter ego now, which only makes the whole thing more bizarre — despite the fact that Julian Plenti's records sounded awfully like Interpol, Banks even insisted on being interviewed in character, reputedly refusing to answer questions that weren't addressed to "Julian." In memory of Julian Plenti, [...]

The prevalence of poor and fragmented families in the inner-city school district where I teach is staggering, and the consequences are easily visible: even as last week's open house brought in a record number of visitors to our school, the percentage of students whose parents or guardians came to visit our classrooms remains shockingly low, with each teacher seeing an average of 8 families in a schedule which has us each teaching over 140 students per semester. Treating this tiny percentage as a triumph is both reasonable and terrifyingly sad. Put it up against [...]

There is nothing more nostalgic than the arrival of Fall in Philadelphia. It is a time when city dwellers indulge the bounty of a good harvest and embrace the awakening chill around them. As music mimics life, Fall can also be brought into season through the creation of a well-spun playlist. Plush, kaleidoscopic colors replace verdant landscape, and lit carved jack-o’-lanterns illuminate dark alleyways. Mothers crawl into attics in search of old sweaters, while children make fresh beginnings in school. Days become shorter, nights become cooler, and the air a bit more nippier. Fall is the year’s natural [...]
