It seemed wrong to do anything outsi de a tribute to the late Jason Molina. Since learning of his passing the other weekend, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. have been dominating my playlists; in particular the former. Given this fact, I focused on the sub-genres Molina often found himself in - folk, folk-rock, and alt-country. Artists like Bill Callahan, Norfolk & Western, Brown Bird and Hayden all made the cut. Check out the play list below. "Simpletons" by The Bats off Free All the Monsters [...]

The Alialujah Choir is a band that happened by chance. Adam Shearer and Adam Selzer were first commissioned to prepare a song for the (D)early Departed compilation which is an album of tracks by Portland artists in support of Lone Fir Cemetary. The track they recorded was "A House A Home". The track is such a far cry from the work they do with Weiland and Norfolk and Western that they were curious as to what could come of the new sound and contacted Alia Farah to come on board. With balancing commitments to [...]
"Vesper" di Leonard Mynx è stato uno degli album che ho amato di più lo scorso anno. Torno a scrivere dell'artista residente a Portland, perchè il chitarrista che l'accompagna, Nathan Clark, ha pubblicato, con il moniker di On The Stairs, un album d'esordio - autoprodotto - intitolato "Beyond A Shadow Of A Doubt", davvero molto [...]

Photography by Me! WHEEE! Okay kiddos, I'm not going to lie... This mixtape was built in a day. It was not curated over a week, it was only test driven once, but that's kinda the point. It's now, for me, now for you, and now for now. Most of these are Oh Teners, some are just Oh Teners To Me (09? 08? whatever). Either way, it's been a short, fast, & furious week of catching up & getting it going, and now, wrapping it up. So. With that in [...]

I don't entirely know why, but lately, I have been having some fucked up mood swings. One moment, I am on the verge of crying at the jewelery counter at Boscovs with my dad because everyone there is totally insensitive to the blood diamond crisis. The next moment, I am giddy with delight at the fact that I can eat a tangerine and play The Sims 3: World Adventures. One moment, I am curled up in fetal position because I miss you so much, wondering how I would get on without you if I never spoke with you again. The [...]

With their carefully crafted, folk like odes you could easily compare A Weather to a lot of the bands they chose for their best albums of 2009. The slow tempo, deep feeling of their music would play well with Wye Oak, Bon Iver, or Grizzly Bear, and so it's not too surprising to see some of their choices this year. Of course they probably should have included their own Cove on this list, but I guess that wouldn't be totally kosher. A Weather - "Oh My Stars" [...]

On June 6, 2006, FensePost went live. Since its inception, I've written more than 1,000 album reviews and countless features, track reviews, live reviews, and video reviews. My collection has grown exponentially. I have a room in my house devoted entirely to records. CDs go in the living room and I'm out of shelving space. To say FensePost has become a big part of my life would be an understatement. It's as much a second job as it is a hobby. Above photo of [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]
Very recently we received from a friend a recommendation and this song from Norfolk & Western. It is from their forthcoming album Dinero Severo (which is currently streaming on their website here). We must confess the band is new to us, although a bit of quick research reveals this appears to be their fourth full length album. The band is the project of Adam Selzer and has a pedigree that

Ah Holly Fam’ly broke the silence of a hushed Berbati’s Pan Thursday night and inadvertently transported the crowd to a lonely farm in Idaho, all clad in streams and dry grass and food-rearing mammals. At least that’s where I went. Suddenly, I had wildflowers adorning my pig-tail braids, a straw hat, denim overalls, and I was wandering in the meadow with my pet goat. Back at Berbati’s, Ah Holly Fam’ly were drawing bows across violins, whispering into flutes, strumming acoustic guitars, and singing harmonies with the serenity and innocence of a children’s church [...]

Dan Stack I quite literally swooned when I first heard Baltimore duo Wye Oak via "Warning", the first promo MP3 from their debut album If Children in January 2008 - for a completely unknown band to hit all the right buttons for me at first listen was a pretty remarkable thing. And yet the album itself failed to build on that excitement for no one particular reason. Best I can reason is that while the ingredients of their sound - plaintive country-folking hurt [...]

Adam Shearer 's hushed vocals are the fragile centerpiece of Portland's WEINLAND . It's what made 2008's La Lamentor such a melancholy and haunting experience (melancholy + haunting = two of TDoL's favorite things). But things have changed with WEINLAND's latest record Breaks In the Sun -not Shearer's voice, of course, but the songs. They're a little ... well, sunnier. There's still a chill breeze blowing gently throughout the disc that is distinctly Portland. Of course, WEINLAND is part of a growing community of [...]

I first met Peter Broderick outside of Economy Candy during CMJ 2006, when he was a member of Norfolk & Western from Portland, OR. I remember being thunderstruck by his onstage chops-he switched fluidly among violin, saw, guitar and possibly banjo, fleshing out Adam Selzer's laid-back folk rock compositions. His sophistication as a multi-instrumentalist belied his age, which was only 19 at the time. Soon after that, he did what any precocious avant-garde classical folk musician would do: He moved to Denmark to join the electronic folk ensemble Efterklang . Broderick moved back [...]

Leonard Mynx is a singer-songwriter who's also a story teller of a rare breed. Based in Portland, Oregon, Mynx has a talent to enchant his listeners as he leads them through some dark and half familiar paths. Though the songs in his debut LP, Vesper , appear to be sombre and somewhat stark, they also portray a sense of quiet truth and dignity emanating. On some songs the resemblance in style to a young Leonard Cohen is discernible; in others, the darkness issuing the narrated story cloaks Mynx in timelessness. Either way, Vesper tells some sad tales [...]

This week is not starting out too well for me so far. I've been getting a weird feeling, a mix between "there's something I've forgotten" and "I'm not supposed to be here" which is a bit disturbing. Fortunately, thanks to the rain enveloped atmosphere and Portland, Oregon's Norfolk & Western, I can afford a little down time. It's all I need right now: mellow lyrics to allow some depression but inspiring and complex enough melodies to keep me from sinking beyond reach. As each song I listen to becomes more complex, more difficult, more layered, so will I, [...]
