If there was one advantage to growing up in Phoenix, AZ, (other than that I now can withstand temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit) it'd have to be my exposure to Norteño music - a polka-related genre from northern Mexico. Whether inside an awesome taco shop or walking through certain neighborhoods, residents of Phoenix are inundated with Norteño. So, after years of hearing this music in the background, I thought I had a firm grasp on the genre-that is until I discovered the Nortec Collective . Comprised of four musicians from Tijuana, this ensemble (represented on this release by two members, Bostich and Fussible [...]

Big ups to Smith for sniffing this one out for us. MOKB loves Nortec Collective , and muy caliente is the only appropriate way to describe Bostich + Fussible's I Count the Ways . The full album, Bulevar 2000 , is available now from our puds and pards at Nacional Records . MP3 : Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich + Fussible - I Count the Ways
As first alluded to in our recent interviews with Bonnaroo co-founder Ashley Capps, the Manchester, Tennessee based music festival will look to expand on the success of last year's "Africa!" themed tent by bringing a Latin themed tent to this year's edition. Curated by Tomas Cookman and Amy Blackman-Romero of Cookman International / Nacional Records, "Latino Alternativo" will bring several of the genre's Latin acts to the Bonnaroo farms on Saturday, June 12th. Included to take part are Ozomatli (who will also MC the stage), Los Amigo Invisibles, Aterciopelados, the Mexican Institute [...]

If you can understand Spanish, this piece about Nortec 's history ten year history and the origins of their "Banda" infused music is a great catch . Who knew that roots went as far deep as Giorgio Moroder?! Don't forget that Nortec member, Clorofila , will be releasing his forthcoming album , "Corridos Urbanos", next month. Nortec Collective Presents: Bostitch + Fussible -Arboles de la Barranca [mp3] Documental: Bostich+Fussible y la música del Nortec / part 1 [...]

Clorofila (aka Jorge Verdin), Nortec Collective member, will be releasing a solo album April 13th via Nacional Records . The offering should do more than fill the void between now and the release of an actual Nortec Collective album. Who's Clorofila? He's known for both his musical and graphic design contributions to Nortec. On the forthcoming solo effort, "Corridos Urbanos", Clorofila harnesses inspiration for the album from an old store in Tijuana where he use to buy 45s and an old night club. Sounds like the perfect blend of debauchery needed to [...]

I can think of much worse ways to spend an August weekend than in the heart of one of my favorite cities (San Francisco), seeing an eclectic lineup of bands both headliner-huge and quirky-small. Last year's inaugural edition of the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival boasted a solid roster of national and local musicians, but was plagued by a few logistical snafus that ranged from the mildly annoying ( no, you can't go that way anymore, you have to walk all the way around ) to the borderline panic-attack inducing [...]

The Tijuana based electronica conjunto Nortec Collective is back with a follow-up to the Latin Grammy-nominated 2006 album The Tijuana Sessions Vol. 3 . Two key members of the five-piece collective, Ramón 'Bostich' Amezcua and Pepe 'Fussible' Mogt , teamed up for Tijuana Sound Machine (Nacional Records), an electronic voyage into the deep north of Mexico, its deserts, and its polka-meets-mariachi norteño music. Their contemporary update of the highly conservative norteño is entertaining and diverse whilst never losing touch with the roots. Clever beats [...]
