Artist : North Atlantic Oscillation Title : Fog Electric Label : Kscope Release Date : 30th April BUY IT Review by Caitlin Gwynn A north Atlantic oscillation is apparently a large-scale pattern of natural climate variability that impacts on the north Atlantic region. Thanks, Wikipedia. North Atlantic Oscillation is also the name of a band [...]

Normally, saying that an album is never able to fully settle into itself would be a criticism, but in the case of Fog Electric , this is a compliment. It doesn't settle because its creators never really allow it to, creating a set of songs in which each component is refreshingly different to the ones it's surrounded by. I must say that KScope Records have a lot going for them right now. Two weeks ago they released one of my favourite albums of the year in Anathema's Weather Systems , and they've quickly followed it with this: an [...]

With their album out next week this is a good time to check this excellent track from North Atlantic Oscillation. Check the visuals on this one.

Somewhere in between the two land masses of Iceland and the Azores, far out to sea, there is a series of fluctuations in air pressure which kick-start a phenomenon known as the North Atlantic Oscillation . It dictates the strength and direction of storms across the surrounding areas and is, naturally, of great interest to European weather girls and boys (or, more obtusely, meteorologists). Why you'd want to name your band after this oddity is beyond me, but at least now you can point at the telly when you spot rubbish weather combined with westerly [...]
I'm a huge fan of music videos made with the same horse-riding children as seen in This American Life. Rudimental's glossy club/gospel remixes do extremely well with John Newman's vocals on the video for "Feel the Love". I do. TOY has hairy color. Liars encounter some man-boobs. Willy Moon has infectious confidence. Crybaby has a [...]
On first listen, the first thing that struck me was how complicated this album is. The album I'm referring to Fog Electric by North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO for short), a mammoth 10 track meaty offering due for release via the Kscope imprint (home to my favorite band The Pineapple Thief). What North Atlatic Oscillation is putting out basically, is a collection of found sound and electronica mathematically arranged into a beautiful patchwork of songs almost resembling music - because, well, it's not music. It's fucking art. This is most definitely not an easy listening album. Fog Electric, with its subtle [...]

French Wives Exciting times lay ahead for Glasgow folk-pop outfit, French Wives, in just a matter of weeks time the five piece will be heading stateside to represent Scotland at this years SXSW, after which they'll be venturing north for Canadian Music Week. As if that wasn't exciting enough the band also have the release of their forthcoming debut album, 'Dream of the Inbetween' to look forward to. If their new single, Younger, is anything to go by then we should be in for a bit of a treat. The song is the second single to be taken [...]

North Atlantic Oscillation have got a new album on the way. It's called Fog Electric and you can listen below to the first track to be taken from it – the excellent Savage with Barometer.

That up there ^ is the artwork for Scottish band North Atlantic Oscillation's new album. Fog Electric will be released on April 30th, so you'd better prepare yourself for a blast of post-rock-ish goodness, though you should also be aware that the band have this habit of sounding rather diverse, so who's to say if the sound of Savage With Barometer will have much bearing on how the whole thing is going to sound? More of what that song has to offering wouldn't be a bad thing at all, though: dreamy arrangements, thudding drums and almost more [...]

Yoofff, wake up, my dozing brain! I think I am going to blame Mrs. Toad, but we have recently taken to having weekends of such epic sloth that even by seven in the evening on Monday my brain is still very much stalled. Of course, back when I had a day job this still used to happen of, except I had to sit at my desk looking fucking useless all day. It's just that now when I spend a day being just a little bit vacant and useless - or glaikit as the Scots rather excellently [...]

Apart from the gig stuff happening this week, I will be on this panel in Glasgow tomorrow. It is about the use of social media in music, and although I am not entirely certain quite how qualified I am to give actual advice, I do notice for example that our social media-based stuff for the record label tend to yield a lot more interest than our mailing list, so I guess there are a few things to talk about. And then on Saturday we'll be recording a Toad Session with the truly awesome PAWS. Quite how [...]

According to Wikipedia "The North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) is a climatic phenomenon in the North Atlantic Ocean of fluctuations in the difference of atmospheric pressure at sea." I assume the choice of band name was inspired by this climatology based term, as this remix of 'First-Rate Pretender' is a pulsating beast, full of cold sounding waves and drops that seem to rise and full throughout this 3 minute jam. Not bad.
Later that usual, as a result of some unforeseen issues at Dear Scotland HQ, Vic presents his weekly round-up of Scottish international gigs with a closer look at Rachel Sermanni. I'm also conscious that I may be missing a few gigs so if you see any glaring omissions let me know. Rachel Sermanni in LA [...]
