I didn't post at all on FensePost last week. That's crazy. I had been on a roll, pumping out posts on a daily basis, then I hit a wall and needed an immediate break. But my breaks are typically filled with, well, something else. They're aren't true breaks , in the informal-synonym-for-vacation sense of the word. That's right, it was pledge week at KSVR and KSVU. Being pledge week, I came in Wednesday night and sat in on Jackson Stewart's Blue Boulevard and we [...]

"I think it's okay to take it with beer… I don't really remember," Brenda Malvini remarked as she popped one of her birth control pills on stage at Highline Ballroom. Yes, this may seem like a strange thing for the lead singer of Brooklyn band North Highlands to do in the middle of a set, but this set was part of the 5 th Annual Roe on the Rocks Benefit Concert for Planned Parenthood NYC (it's all coming together now, isn't it?). The evening on April 16 th was hosted [...]

Filed under: Monthly Mixtape Flickr March is over. The trees are budding early, the flowers are blooming into a bounty of spring colors, Valdimir Putin is the president of Russia again, Rush Limbaugh called a respectable human being a "slut" and the earth ticks ever closer to the end of times. So what better way to await the arrival of the alien drone destroyers than this kick-ass mixtape. After you buy extra water and batteries, unplug [...]
North Highlands | Photo by Adam Wissing Three "Hey, Spring, What happened to you? You used to be cool," reasons to head on over to Beat Kitchen and avoid that sun... 1. Brooklyn baroque poppers North Highlands are the perfect band with which to kick back and settle into some mellow. The group's twinkling atmospherics mixed with shimmering guitar work will leave you floating. Vocalist Brenda Malvini's gentle harmonies tie North Highland's dreamy compositions together with a big red bow. There's an air of similarity between North [...]

To those of you that came out to our SXSW party, The Beehive , thank you so much! For those that didn't, make sure you get your ass there next year. A very big thank you to all the bands that played as well as Bryan and Heidi over at Paper Garden Records . Photos of Jukebox the Ghost , Snowmine , American Royalty , Lucius , and more below. Photos by the lovely Lauren Keogh .

My breakdown (rendered inaccurately!): 75% addictive, 20% brilliant, 4.5% 10,000 Maniacs, 0.5% Lavender Diamond. Been listening to this all week. Favorite song is "Salty": This weather feels / just like better days. Buy Album | Listen on Spotify .
George Michael should start playing this version. I've been following New York's North Highlands since their CMJ appearance in 2009 - I wasn't there, but luckily the Internet was. The folk-rock act has grown up quite a bit since then, making one of last year's finest records and becoming the rare band that can produce hypnosis and dance floor grooves in perfect symmetry. (See also: LCD Soundsystem, who never made an album this good. Controversial opinion!) They may be the least-known band on our Waynestock bill next week, though I'm sure they won't be for long. Here are [...]

We're teaming up with Paper Garden Records for a very special SXSW party on Friday, March 16! Even better is that this event is completely FREE and you won't need a SXSW badge to get in! ![YOU WON'T, JAMES BLAKE, PEARL AND THE BEARD [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4057655_lg.jpg)
Things are finally picking up here in New York City as the indie music world waiting until Valentine's Day week to start pulling all the punches. For the second straight week, you can join us for a "The Wild Honey Pie Presents" gig, this time over in Brooklyn at Park Slope's Union Hall where we'll be celebrating a special occasion on Saturday night. What is this special occasion you ask? You Won't is celebrating the release of their debut record, Skeptic Goodbye , and ringing it in with the gorgeous ladies of Lucius [...]

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

Tweet vaso link The year in music that was/is 2011 marked a departure from the prior two in which this blog has been in existence. This in the sense that, as opposed to waiting for albums from bigger bands one could classify as a favorite, there were far more unanticipated discoveries. I often talk of expectations, but this year I had few. For this year end list, I whittled down the list of the year's albums slowly to include those [...]

Amazingly enough, 2011 has already come and gone, but with it came a slew of glorious, captivating records. From the return of veterans Bright Eyes , Wilco , and Death Cab for Cutie , to sophomore explosions from The Antlers , Girls , Bon Iver , and Fleet Foxes , and jaw-dropping debuts from Youth Lagoon , James Blake , You Won't , and Caveman , this has been one incredible year of music for us. Say what you will about this year versus the [...]
