LA’s Northern Youth first caught my attention with the fantastic grandiose build of debut double single “Los Angeles”/”Islands” and now after being holed up in a cabin in Norther Arizona for months, Luke Messimer is finally ready to release his debut record. Our first taste comes in the form of the positively uplifting Hide You Away”. No other folk-based artist in the world can give you this musical medicine that will make you feel all too mighty and proud. Always one to use his electronic elements in slight proportions, he again excels at making something so melodic and infectious [...]

When Luke Messimer first resurfaced as Northern Youth after the demise of Mississippi Man, we were smitten by the open-hearted, full-throated folk he displayed on such songs as "She's in the Wild." Messimer has been hard at work on a self-titled full-length debut, and it'll see the light of day on June 18. "Hide You Away," the first official track off of the Northern Youth album, presents a move from folk to a nice piano arrangement garnished with electric guitar and a slick back beat, and Messimer's falsetto finds itself going for a ride beside the bouncing synths. [...]

I actually overlooked this track and "She's In The Wild" at least once for sure. I received it, filed it into my queue and never quite got around to giving it a proper listen and then posting it. Northern Youth is the solo recording project of (newly) Long Beach, CA based Luke Messimer. The music is sincere, it's honest...and it's pretty damn good. "Los Angeles" could be described as your typical folk-pop dalliance, with a sparse and touching arrangement that has an undercurrent of emotion pushing the track, driving it forward. Messimer's vocals are high and poignant, and [...]

It's been a long trip for Luke Messimer, and maybe a strange one too, but certainly circular. Messimer was one of two frontmen in the Orange County-bred quintet Mississippi Man, which released a very promising album in mid-2010 and then called it quits by the end of that year . After the breakup, he lived in Seattle and played as a sideman, and then spent some time in a cabin in the woods of northern Arizona. There, he worked up the songs that would become his debut as Northern Youth before returning to southern California. [...]

Folk/electronic act Northern Youth has just put out an excellent double single, “Los Angeles/”Islands”. “Los Angeles” is equally grandiose sing-along , and intimate enough that you could whisper it in the ear of your closest friend. As a lot of artists might knock LA, it’s so refreshing to hear Luke Messimer exclaim in full confidence, “Los Angeles, you’re alright in my mind”. The acoustic and hand clap a-plenty song just brings us lots of warm love. “Islands” focuses more on it’s electronic upbringings and takes on the dark edge of Caribbean living. Wherev er Luke is specifically talking about is somewhere I never would like [...]
Northern Youth released a double single yesterday featuring Los Angeles and Islands . Both songs are worthy of a listen. Los Angeles is great, but Islands is spectacular to these ears. It's slightly minimalist while merging elements of folk and electronic. It features a bit of hum, which aids in creating a wonderful wanderlust feeling while listening. Take a listen and like Northern Youth on Facebook . The post Northern Youth - Los Angeles/Islands appeared first on 1146 [...]

Spring has its own special brand of fidgetiness. I start to feel slowly like there are little invisible crawly things on my skin, in a picnic sort of way, and I get all these ideas about exploring and adventures. Combine that with the calescent glow of things warming up all around us, and I spend a noticeably increased amount of time staring out the window lost in daydreams. As with any other season for the last few years, I've stitched up a soundtrack of twenty songs that are compelling me in these days, wafting out my opened windows [...]
Words // Adam Sharp 'The House That Heaven Built'- Japandroids Noisy, brash, full of call and response shouting and a guitar line that makes me feel 15 again. There's not a lot to dislike. ( website ) 'Broken Minds'- Northern Youth A really well-executed, beautifully troubled anthem. ( website ) Northern Youth - Broken Minds 'Winter [...]

Sometimes, diving into new music can be reinvigorating. That's the case here. Northern Youth is the project of Luke Messimer. I'll echo Adam of Songs for the Day (where I found this): it’s catchy, awesome, and I like it a lot. Broken Minds is an anthem, plain and simple. It slowly builds and over the last two minutes crescendos with the oh's and repeating, looping vocals leaving the forty seconds or so as a comedown for a man with a broken mind. It's well worth a listen or 4. [...]

Life-long musician and Orange County native, Luke Messimer, was raised in an atmosphere of highly musical influences. Audiophile parents, along with the local church music scene and persistent jam sessions with friends, all helped shape the guy behind the young project known as Northern Youth (@northyouthmusic). Pulling from artists like Jack White and The Beatles , Northern Youth’s sound is decidedly retro-inspired pop. After being involved in LA’s music scene for some time, Messimer recently decided to relocate to Seattle, which has given him the opportunity to collaborate and seek [...]
