Recalling familiar elements of Bay Area melodic punk favorites, including Jawbreaker and Samiam, San Francisco's Nothington recently released Borrowed Time and embarked on a European tour last month in support of it. Thanks to the good people at Red Scare, the band's label, staff interviewer Andrew Clark spoke with guitarist/vocalist Chris Matulich about touring in foreign countries, writing lyrics, and his thoughts on the 'Orgcore genre.

The Rocket Fuel Podcast has released a special Fest 10 edition episode. In the podcast listeners can hear new tracks from Samiam , Nothington , Polar Bear Club and the premiere of a new track from Good Luck . The song is titled "Impossible" and comes from their upcoming record Without Hesitation . Also in the episode, Fest organizer Tony Weinbender lets it slip that the "mystery band" playing at the Double Down on Friday is not a band that has played Fest before. Listeners [...]

Gregg Allman - "I Can't Be Satisfied" Low Country Blues (2011) Bowood Having wasted most of his career drunk and high, I feel Gregg has made a fine soulful album. This version of a Muddy Waters classic is a good example. 2. Mount Carmel - Still Listening.mp3 Buy [...]

As we round the corner on another year and prepare for the the dawning of a brand new decade, we thought it appropriate to take a look at some songs focused on years - or at least songs that reference them in their titles. We left out some obvious choices - "Summer of '693 by Bryan Adams, "19793 by Smashing Pumpkins and "19993 by Prince for example - since they didn't seem to need the exposure. But that still left plenty of great tunes for this, our tenth podcast (ten podcasts in five years - go us!), which spans 73 [...]

So this is it. My favorite full-length albums of the year. So many other blogs post their top songs of the year, but I guess I'm a bit more old-school (and probably older) than most of them. I prefer the album format rather then just ranking singles against one another. I posted Part I of this list yesterday, but there are so many good albums from 2009 that I had to leave off the list completely (unless I was going to make it an even 100). Maybe next year, right? Also, fuck all the [...]

Nothington's 2007 album, All In , was good and ended up taking the #12 spot on my best of list for that year, but I wasn't expecting the band to mature and progress as much as they have here. Every single song on Nothington's new album Roads, Bridges and Ruins is a goddamn sing-a-long anthem. Seriously, it's almost unbelievable just how good this (and that's a 100% hyperbole-free statement). It picks up right where All In left off and finds the band continuing to play the raw, melodic, unpretentious anthemic punk that made [...]
I could try to write something profound that would explain some of the choices on this list, but I'm not going to. Instead, here are albums 20-11 on my 50 favorite albums of 2007 list. 20. Feist - The Reminder ( Cherry Tree ) MP3 | One, Two, Three, Four This is a beautiful and enchanting album of absolutely fantastic warm and airy Parisienne Americana (whatever that means) on which Leslie Feist's vocals are subtle, fragile, [...]

O kay folks. This may be the series finale. I think I've busted out just about every pop punk-ish band that I can think of. If you have more suggestions, let me know. Four good songs I've been listening to a lot lately. Babyshambles, "UnBiloTitled" (from Shotter's Nation) I mentioned a couple of weeks ago how good the new Babyshambles album is. This might be my favorite song on the disc, though it's a very close call. The album comes out in the U.S. next Tuesday, October 23rd, via Astralwerks. It's sure to be on my year-end list. Bishop Allen, "Little

W ow! I've been finding out about so many great new bands that I've felt like a kid in a candy store lately. One of those bands is San Francisco's Nothington . They have a new album called All In that is out now and full of what I'd like to describe as roots rock core. It is a sound that might be akin to Social Distortion meets Hot Water Music or (additionally) like Lucero on steroids. Gruff raspy coarse abrasive vocals atop a bed of leafy crunchy guitars and melodic basslines. [...]
Nothington - ?All In? (BYO Records) Nothington isn?t exactly mining new territory with their sing-along oi-influenced cowpunk. Their Social Distortion style is very much in the vein of bands like Sixer or the GC5. Dirty, but catchy is the way these guys play. Nothington?s got a couple former members of Tsunami Bomb in ...
Justin : Tsunami Bomb's demise had little to no effect on me - while nearly always competent the band always seemed to lack a "hook" aside from Ms. Whitehurst's voice. Born from their ashes are three bands, one of which has caught my fancy. Nothington may claim San Francisco as home now, but their sound is a blending of Social Distortion-esque punk rock and the gruff of Gainesville's finest. Today's song, graciously offered up for this feature by BYO, features driving guitar and extremely gruff lead vocals set against a bit of a "southern" [...]
