I'm quick hitting Things Fall Apart, the new album from Newfoundland rock & rollers The Novaks for a couple reasons. Of course there's the ever present "not enough time/too many things to write about" that I deal with on a daily basis right about now, but moreso than that, I think that reaction to this album will be pretty polarized - it's twelve songs of good old fashioned gut-kick rock & roll - and people will likely either love it or hate it, and no amount of rambling, barely coherent paragraphs from me will change that. [...]

As is usually the case, I was not able to get out on Thursday night until after 10 or so, and I decided that I was just going to plop myself down at Lee's Palace and check out the lineup there. I arrived there as Newfoundland's The Novaks were partway through their set. They played some pretty straight forward rock 'n roll that seems to be influenced by riff heavy rock like The Rolling Stones , while incorporating a mid 70's garage sound reminiscent of Teenage Head [...]

I've so been neglecting this blog of late. Some hideous form of inertia has kicked in. "Oh, I posted last week! I can just kick back for awhile." And before you know it, a week turned to a month, then two —before you know it, the tumbleweeds are blowing through. Insidious! It ends here! (Not so) new year, new leaf. I'm cleaning out the virtual dustbunnies and vowing to keep things a bit more up-to-date around here. And, in honor of what was a pretty good Monday (as Mondays [...]

occasionally a compilation comes along that is nothing less than genre-defining. foundry's "will our children thank us" is one of those. but what genre exactly? i guess you'd have to call it british post-rock perhaps. or new neu maybe. or something else entirely. or better still nothing at all. 1. throwing a curve ball - appliance 2. glenda - billy mahonie 3. carnival of souls [ghost train dub] - pram 4. fonk - electric sound of joy 5. close frank falling - wisdom of harry 6. peggy's well - novak 7. biggest lie - piano magic 8. eeriel [...]

How much is that rockband in the window? Really. What are our rock options these days? Just "rock." Rock not encumbered by prefixes like "indie," "dance" or "artdamagedpoptronicafolkmetal ." Just "rock." Here's one: The Novaks . I caught the St. John's Canada foursome at SXSW 2006 and they were one of my favorite finds. They came with no hype and the place, a dance lounge by night (it was night but this is SXSW), was blissfully empty (blissful for us, not them). The guy I was with, who can [...]

I've posted Antennas ' song Adapt! a while ago in a mixtape, but I think the band really needs some more promotion than just that. So here we go: Antennas is a three-piece from Sweden, were founded around 2004 and originally named Novak . After two of the founding members left, the band changed not only the name, but also their musical style into a more rocking, mature and modern sound. [...]
Pipes Workshop [...]
