Wow. Five years and some 1,800 posts ago, I sat at my computer during a lunch hour penning the first post ever on ninebullets . Since that day we've made a few more posts, booked a few shows and sold a few tshirts and koozies. As is tradition here on 9B, there will be no other posts today and I am hoping to leave work early to grab a beer or two in celebration. See, in the world of the internet, 5 years may as well be a friggin' lifetime and, to be honest, I am feeling [...]

Ever had one of those albums that you know, had you not been in the right mood when you heard it the first time you wouldn't have liked it? Well for me Kill County's The Year Of Getting By is one of those albums. I'd cued it up one afternoon as work was wrapping up so I had to pause it halfway through the first track and didn't get back to it until the next morning. One could say fate had intervened. The next morning, with a foggy head waiting for its morning dose of coffee, I pressed [...]

Rain? In January? In Canada? Oh man, I am feeling extra lazy/basic today, so I am just going to post the same thing I posted last Dec. 31. I'm going to get drunk and see The Sadies tonight! Whoo-Hooo! Have a great night people! And thanks so much for indulging my vanity and reading my blog! Todd Snider - Happy New Year/All That Matters.mp3 From : Live [...]
I was in dire need of a rock and roll soul cleanse, so I headed out to the Horseshoe last night to catch a few of my favorite locals acts. I had a late conference call, so I missed opener The Matthews Brothers , but made it just as The Warped 45s started their set. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Horseshoe was at about three-quarters capacity. Lots of fans out to support the local acts, plus a bunch of grumpy Leafs fans, with a few noticeably double fisting bottles of beer. [...]

Ever been at a bar or a show and you saw someone who was so embarrassingly drunk that you felt badly for them? I'm pretty sure that was me last Sunday night. My good friends Jen and Ryan got themselves hitched last Sunday, September 19. After their spectacular wedding and me drinking my weight in wine at the reception, I grabbed a cab to the Dakota Tavern to catch the last two of sets of a gig by NQ Arbuckle . I don't have a lot to say about the show other than [...]

Well. I'll be a motherfucker. I never expected to still be doing these 12 months after the first one but here we are. Furthermore, I feel as though they are an integral part of the site now days. For some reason, I don't really care to much about the stats for the podcast but today I took a peek at them and according to the stats there are 2500 subscribers to this fucker! I don't know if that's a lot or a pathetic number in podcast world but I am pretty sure it's more people [...]

One of the problems you can run into sometimes when you write a music blog and work at a radio station is that there is often just too much music to listen to. E-mails, direct mails, download sites, promoters, other blogs... there's a lot to keep up with. I'm not asking anyone to feel sorry for me... it's a nice problem to have... I'm just trying to explain why it can take something like six months for me to finally get around to writing about an album like Let's Just Stay Here from Carolyn Mark and [...]
Canadian alt-country balladeers NQ Arbuckle teamed up with singer-songwriter Carolyn Mark this past year for a collaborative release. The result was the full-length "Let's Just Stay Here", released through Vancouver's Mint Records mid-October. The album marks the first release from NQ Arbuckle since their 2008 Juno-nominated released XOK , and the first from Carolyn Mark since her 2007 LP "Nothing is Free". Driven by the strong storytelling one comes to expect from an NQ Arbuckle piece, and harmonies from Mark that often impress over the melody, Officer Down is one of [...]

I don't know about you, but my 2009 sucked ass. 2010 better be awesome! My resolution: less doctors, more bartenders. Kinda like the little new years babies above. Yay to drinking! Much like Kasey's two sentence reviews, I thought I'd bang out a couple of pieces that have been floating around in my Google Docs account in various forms of incompletion and combine them into one post instead of just deleting them. Sometimes it's hard to find something to say about every. single. cd you like, but I'll usually at least give it a shot. These are those shots: PETE BERNHARD - STRAIGHT LINE Pete Bernhard is one third of the phenomenal [...]

Carolyn Mark is my new hero. I'd never seen her live before she and NQ Arbuckle played a double, actually triple, bill at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto on Thursday, October 22. The Dakota is exactly the kind of place you want to see this show. Its like a dusty Texas saloon, only downtown in a major metropolis. The capacity is maybe 200, and it was only two-thirds full that night, the second night of their CD release party for Let's Just Stay Here . [...]

As a testament to just how out of sorts I've been for the entire month of September I totally missed the sites big birthday. WTF? Anyhow. Ninebullets.net turned three years old on September 21st. This year saw the addition of Kasey Anderson and RomeoSidVicious as writers as well as the addition of a monthly podcast . All of these additions were met a significant traffic increase (which always helps keep the fires burning). Hopefully we'll be around for 3 more years and I swear to god that next years birthday is [...]
Last week I told you about a new book that I really enjoyed and learned a great deal from: Ryan Edwardson's Canuck Rock: A History of Canadian Popular Music . Now I've got a few copies of the book to giveaway! Details and a Q & A below, plus download songs by some of Ryan's favourite Canadian artists. The book deals with rock 'n' roll, folk, and other popular (read: commercially successful) forms of music in Canada from the 1950s to the present day. Although fairly broad in scope, the book is mostly interested in [...]

I think I've always like the idea of Carolyn Mark more than I've actually liked her output. I know that back handed compliment would make McEnroe proud and infuriate her fans (and her maybe). It's impossible to not acknowledge or recognize her talent, but I never found her previous releases something I could sink my teeth into. Her beautiful, slightly husked voice and melancholic alt-country tunes always sound good to me on a casual listen, I just never really gravitated back for multiple listens. Let's Just Stay Here changes all that. [...]

Concert Review: Justin Rutledge with NQ Arbuckle, The Mod Club, Friday, May 29, Toronto Rule number one when headlining a live gig: don't let the opening band upstage you. NQ Arbuckle opened the early show at the Mod Club in Toronto on Friday, May 29, with some serious country-rock. Lead by raspy-voiced Neville Quinlan, the band rocked through eight songs spanning all three of their Six Shooter Records releases. They opened with a smoking version of "Huntsville Affair" [...]

Hot Panda at CMJ 2008 Photo : Bryan Bruchman Here's a little taste of what Vancouver's Mint Records has on tap for 2009. Hot Panda Volcano... Bloody Volcano Release Date: Feb 10, 2009 Volcano... Bloody Volcano is a collection of collaborative songs chock-full of the band's spastic energy. It's reminiscent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, State Bird, older Flaming Lips (think "Tangerine"), with flashes of [...]
Well. The site officially turns 2 on Sunday but I've decided to acknowledge it today. In the past two years I've had some good times on this here web site. I've had some not so good times as well. I hope y'all have found some music you otherwise may not have and I hope things will continue to go well in the coming year. We may not be the biggest site on the internets but I think we're pretty damned keen. So, if you remember too, while your out tonight raise up a Washington Apple shot to ninebullets.net. [...]

The NQ in NQ Arbuckle stands for lead singer Neville Quinlan. Who knows where the Arbukle comes from but the remaining members of the band are Mark Kesper (drums), Peter Kesper (lead guitar) and John Dinsmore (bass ). They come outta Toronto (that's in Canada for all you W. Virginian folk) and XOK is their third effort. Admittedly, until this album landed on my desk I'd never heard of the band and on first listen I didn't exactly notice the album but the moment it ended I knew I wanted to listen to it again. So [...]
