Original Image by Kris Kesiak Here is my annual list of ladies who are creating some of the most awesome pop music at the moment and whose music I expect to reach out to larger audiences in 2013. The list features two artists each from the US and the UK and one each from Australia and Sweden. I would have loved to include Jessie Ware on this list since she missed out last [...]

Here is my list of 13 bands that I ‘discovered’ and absolutely loved in 2012 ; and that I hope will reach out to wider audiences in 2013. Admittedly this years list is a lot more skewed towards US bands and garage/punk rock than last years list but I guess that’s how the cookie crumbled for me musically speaking in 2012. The Orwells [...]

These dozen albums from 2012 were the ones that I enjoyed listening to the most over the course of the year. Again the list is arranged broadly in ascending order of likeability. Swing Lo Magellan by Dirty Projectors There is no way that I would have listened to this album (or an album like this) all the way [...]

Original Image by Sharon Drummond It’s that time of the year again, when I look back and reflect on all the great music that I listened to in the year gone by. I’m starting with the list of my favourite songs from 2012 and will follow it up with the list of my favourite 2012 albums next week. The bands and female artists to watch in 2013 lists should be out in the 1 st week of the New Year. [...]

Original Image by Carl Jones Given that we’re through with half of 2012 here’s a quick recap of my favourite songs of the year so far (individual songs followed by a playlist). The songs while not ranked are broadly in ascending order of likeability. The list has 30 songs in all spread across two pages (look for the link to page two below the share buttons at the end of page one). Have a listen and let [...]

Given the fantastic response to last years list, here are seven female singers that I expect (hope) to make a mark on wider audiences than their current sphere of influence in 2012 and beyond. While the 2011 list had more mainstream artists on it, this year’s list reflects the evolution in my listening taste over the last year that I’ve spent blogging and features a more eclectic mix of female artists. Some (most) of them will never see the kind of success that say Adele (or even Jessie [...]

Original image by wintercool612 This is a list of 15 bands that I see ‘breaking out’ and reaching out to wider audiences in 2012. If they happen to be playing in your corner of the world then I would seriously recommend you check them out in the coming year. The list covers a range of artists from those who have been around for a while and have achieved a certain level of fame playing big music festivals and/or opening [...]

This the last post of 2011. Regular action will resume from the 2nd of January, 2012. Happy holidays everyone! These are the albums from 2011 that I enjoyed listening to the most. As a child of the 1990’s (oh well a teenager) I continue to maintain a certain bias towards alternative & hard rock. Four of my favourite albums from 2011 too would fall under this broad classification. What is heartening is that I finally seem to be broadening my listening horizons as well. The list [...]

Metallica play in my home town in a few hours time . Here’s a playlist of my favourite Metallica songs covering the period of the bands' work that I was really into (1983-1991). Metallica might not seem relevant now but there was a time when they were the best at what they did and were the biggest band in the world. Nothing can change that and take that away from James Hetfield and co.

Friday Favourite Five is back after a gap and this week features British pop singer-songwriter Lily Rose Beatrice Cooper better known as Lily Allen . Lily rose to prominence in the latter half of the noughties on the back of two cool (albeit very different) albums; Alright, Still (2006) and It’s [...]

I think I’ll have to change the name of this feature since I rarely stick to just five songs! I kicked off a project of sorts last month which entails my listening to the entire discography of a classic or cult band/artist whose music I have overlooked in the past (for various reasons) and then posting my version of the bands’ greatest hits (I actually got the idea from the post I did on The Pixies ). The first band picked as part [...]

Hey its Friday and Favourite Five time! This week features some of my favourite songs by a guy who turned up the fashion quotient in rock music like no other in the mid nineties, the ever cool Leonard Albert Kravitz better known to us as Lenny Kravitz . Check out a video playlist of some of Lennys best songs (for some reason his songs aren't available on Grooveshark!), songs included are It Ain't Over Till [...]

Wow. Another mind-bending milestone in the TBE saga. 1000 is a big number but in the grand scheme of things it will only be the tip of the iceberg. Running this site for the past 28 months has been an honor and privilege and we all look forward to dropping more sweet jams for a long time to come. For now lets celebrate with a little mixtape I put together below. There is a theme in there somewhere... There are some potential changes to the site underway but until I get a breather from work I won't be [...]

FF5 is back after a gap of a couple of weeks and given the brilliant weather this morning in Delhi I am in the mood for some Korn. Korn have been around since 1993, releasing nine studio albums and countless hit singles over their long career. This weeks’ FF Five has the James Murphy led LCD Soundsystem , which officially retired in 2011, as the object of its affection. The band released three albums leading a kind of dance punk revival in the 2000’s (along with bands like The Rapture ) and in the process made some of the most memorable dance songs of the last decade. Check out some of my favourite songs by the band starting with Home [...]

Led by Brian Hugh Warner , Marilyn Manson were at the forefront of the industrial rock movement in the mid 1990’s. With a sound that was heavily influenced by Nine Inch Nails with whom they toured frequently and stage antics that would have made Alice Cooper proud, Marilyn Manson epitomized ‘shock and awe’ and thereby secured their name in rock folklore.
