71. White Williams Smoke; While "bands" like Dan Deacon and Girl Talk got dance crowds all sweaty throughout the year, White Williams was busy giving people more of a chill out vibe with their dance music. The songs on the album are delivered with Williams' casual cadence as the beats run rampant behind them, though never at the pace of previously mentioned electro folks. It's an interesting

Image: Dan-ah Kim Capture the Flag - Nurse & Soldier Maybe because I spent a big chunk of sunny Sunday watching The War , I half expected a band called Nurse & Soldier to offer lovelorn Bing Crosby croons or Andrews Sisters' style pep talks. Or perhaps clipped Ernest Hemingway-like rhetoric about courage and sacrifice and victory. Nope. N&S (an Oneida sideproject) makes emotionally [...]

Roslindale, MA "Capture The Flag" Nurse & Soldier on MySpace Nurse & Soldier on The Hype Machine

Boston by way of Brooklyn's Nurse and Soldier make music after putting in the nine to five at their respective day jobs. With a little more exposure, who knows, maybe they'd need to find part time work to supplement being a full time band. Regardless if their fortune changes, I'm glad I stumbled upon their work. "Green Tea" is a sparse track with few discernible lyrics. Whatever is being said stays relatively incomprehensible, as its buried deep beneath the slow-cycling lounge instrumentation. The band sounds completely different on "Capture the Flag," as the [...]

Nurse & Soldier - Back in Yr Corner (Brah 2007) Nurse & Soldier - Marginalia / Brah After a long day interviewing at a career fair and looking pretty for the papers, it's back to the dirty business at hand: Writing about albums. Nurse & Soldier appear to be up for this. Marginalia certainly looks elegant enough upon first glance, even if that font recalls Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness . You think I'm kidding, but Nurse & Soldier luckily won't be an album [...]
Land of Talk members include Elizabeth, Bucky and Chris are a Montreal-based band started by Elizabeth Powell . Elizabeth has been making music for awhile but it wasn't until she met up with drummer Bucky was Land of Talk formed, then Chris (bass) came along and the intricate beaming rock of Land of Talk was complete. Their debut album Cheer Boo Hiss was released on Dependent Music on April, 11th 2006. Weeeeee! Sea Foam [...]

The third Tuesday of the new year has become the new traditional date to make your indie rock release ( see last year's motherload .) Today there's a gluttony of riches being dropped in front of us, and, at least for me, the sheer amount of interesting releases is nearly paralyzing. Playlist: New Releases 01.23.07 Here's what I've packed into my Sansa (not counting the big three releases from The Shins , Of Montreal , Deerhoof .) ------------------------------ -- [...]
I need to get married. You know why? So I can fulfill my lifelong dream of being a husband and wife duo. Then we can make an album and become critics darlings. I'm not sure if you're familiar with, oh,...
Very impressive stuff from Oneida multi-instrumentalist Bobby Oneida's side project Nurse & Soldier, a "co-ed" psych-pop band comprising him and long-time collaborator Erica Fletcher. But where Oneida's "psych" pulses and throbs, Nurse & Soldier's wavers from hazed, fluid ballads to...

Originally, herohill made a new year's resolution to stop talking about husband and wife bands, especially the cute-as-a-button kind that pop up on blogs more often than Lohan. Well, like the unused gym membership, the Atkins diet, or the attempt to understand why people love the Joanna Newsom record, our first resolution failed. Nurse & Soldier is another two-piece unit, but this time the band is backed by some solid rock pedigree (one half of the duo is Bobby Matador of Oneida , the other his wife Erica). Instead of [...]

I recently read a book called Love is a Mix Tape , by Rob Sheffield. Its a great book that boils down to a story about a boy and a girl, they fall in love, something happens. In between the two characters share an enormous love for music and for making mix tapes to celebrate the most mundane of moments like washing the dishes. Within the book there is a chapter where Rob tells the reader about his never ending fantasy with each and every woman he had ever had a crush on. The fantasy is to start a [...]

Comprised of Oneida's Bobby Matador and his wife Erica Fletcher, Nurse and Soldier create a serene mix of murky psych-pop with overtones of crunchy synthesizers and clean languid guitar. Vocals are split between the couple with Bobby's voice washing into a haze of phlange and Erica's providing a counterbalance of dry melancholy. The two play off of each other easily, creating a record that gently aches with a bittersweet sense of exhaustion. It walks into the psych teritory softly, never hitting you over the head with effects. Instead the strength of their songwriting shines through; at times sunny and at [...]
