Yikes! What a week this has been on my end of things. I've unfortunately had to simultaneously struggle with catching up, settling in and being temporarily unemployed. It will certainly make me happy when some prospects fall into place and I can get back to being overly busy. Until then, allow me to continue my birthday week extravaganza with a couple of selections from Nurses' debut album, Hangin' Nothin' But Our Hands Down. The Jason Cupp (The Elected) produced effort has a rather nifty sound that is anything but conventional and will probably end up being [...]

It's too bad music is always broken down into comparisons. Everything is forced to sound like everything else, if only because of those trying to describe it. So, wWhen you hear the quirky vocal delivery of front man Aaron Chapman and the spastic percussion loops and truncated guitar riffs that dot the landscapes of the Nurses debut record you want to mention Modest Mouse and Wolf Parade . When you hear the vocal line that opens the record, you are tempted to mention Bright Eyes . When you hear the gradual builds into booming [...]

When four men are huddled together in a room, deciding on what to call their new band, Nurses is probably the last name on the list for the usual sort. Usually guys want something gritty, dirty, rough, and intimidating; something lasting to strike in the hearts of those ignorant few who use a band's name as the deciding factor as whether to listen to them or not. Fortunately for us all, the four members of Nurses are letting their fantastic sound do the talking. Like the profession that their name bears, Nurses quietly and expertly utilize proficiency behind [...]
Featured Artist: Lightning Dust LIGHTNING DUST is Amber Webber and Joshua Wells, who have been playing together for many years as part of BLACK MOUNTAIN. They've toured the world and have played impenetrable space-rock to the unlikeliest of audiences. With an abundance of creative energy to spare, the two decided to start a separate project together. Committing themselves to a more simplistic approach with Lightning Dust, Webber and Wells also decided to escape the comforts of their familiar instruments and writing styles. On their debut, minimal [...]

Another nice find... Nurses hail from Southern California and their sound is, well...take a listen: Nurses - Alone at Last It seems they have a bit of their own sound their, something a bit unusual. But there's always comparisons, aren't there? But I'm not gonna go there. Nurses - Hungry Mouth Have fun with those two tracks. I'm gonna have to track down the album. [...]
Maybe the best thing about this year's batch of albums is the presence of hard, edgy keys. Makes one wonder how much of this is owed to Q and Not U. But already, I digress. Menomena broke the year in with chords less played than attacked, or used as weapons. Many examples later, Nurses use the keys mainly to toughen their sound, not soften it. And when the keys do soften the song, they build anticipation and tension, rather than create peace and contentment. Nurses - Alone [...]

Chicago, IL There isn't much I can say about Nurses except that I LOVE THEM!!! You will too. "Wait For A Safe Sign" Nurses on MySpace Nurses on The Hype Machine

Wading through the endless Myspace friend requests from bands, the promo cds and recommendations received, there is an overwhelming surplus of new music. I've heard some really great material, some filler, some stuff I'll never listen to again. This Friday 8-Track includes a collection of artists who have hit the new music bin and made their way to the iPod - (a very illustrious position, indeed). You can expect to hear plenty more from these artists this year. Enjoy! Program 1: 1. Little Man Tate - "Sexy In Latin" [...]
