As a kid, the family usually made at least one trek annually to visit relatives in Western Pennsylvania. To mitigate the need to navigate traffic, we would often set off on these trips in the wee hours of the night, getting the first couple hours in before the sunrise. It was thrilling to be up in the middle of the night, at an hour whose existence was wholly unknown to me at the time. As my younger brother and our mother would be asleep in the backseat, I was accorded shotgun, road atlas [...]

You know Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan already, of course: he's the late Pakastani singer who brought qawwali music to the world. Sickeningly, we have Peter Gabriel to thank for that. It was on his Real World label that Khan's albums of intense and ecstatic devotional Sufi music were originally released. It turned out that harmonium, percussion and vocals wasn't the most popular mix of sound for most audiences, so a successful remix was made of the song Musst Musst . As I understand it that's in keeping with Sufi tradition, which is to always speak [...]

Set for release on March 23, 2010 is Gaudi's latest record No Prisoners . Before the release even drops, a remix contest has already begun ( audio for participation available here ) London based producer and solo artist Gaudi's latest project, No Prisoners comes to us after a very fertile year in which the renowned artist toured the world, rocking dance floors and gathering fans with his unconventional innovative performance style and irresistibly floor friendly tunes. It was also a year where Gaudi was nominated for a BBC World Music Award [...]

Badar Ali Khan (1962-2007) was a younger cousin of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Must have been tough, standing in the shadows of arguably the best qawwali singer the world has ever known. To expect that Badar, who was also a big guy, could scale the same dazzling vocal heights as his illustrious uncle would be too much of course, but he sure came close sometimes. Try on Jano Mara Dil for proof. Badar Ali Khan - Jano Mara Dil (My Heart) MP3
Oklahoma's Evangelicals had one of our favorite LPs last year in 'The Evening Descends,' so with that we asked front man Josh Jones to DJ our Friday Ten this week. The bar was set pretty high last week with Nicole Atkins' DJ turn, but Josh has come through with flying colors. Rather inspired and diverse colors, I might add: "On our way to Kansas City from Denver earlier this evening, and while dj'ing from the passenger seat, I momentarily fell asleep and dreamt that it was me [...]
So many artists pass away before I get the chance to see them live but never having witnessed a performance by the great qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan must be one of my biggest regrets. So when this tribute gig was announced, pairing Nusrat's nephew (and esteemed artist in his own right) Ratah Fateh [...]

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Urdu: نصرت فتح على خاں, October 13, 1948 – August 16, 1997), was a Pakistani musician, primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical tradition within Islam). He featured in Time magazine's 2006 list of 'Asian Heroes'. Among other honorary titles bestowed upon him, Nusrat was called Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, meaning The Emperor of Qawwali.Mustt

I usually cover nothing but music here at For The Sake Of The Song , but that doesn´t mean I haven´t got any other interests. Far from it. Football (got my ticket for tomorrow´s edition of El Clásico ... yes!), literature, movies, travel... And politics. And that´s what I´m on about tonight. Do not fear though, there´s a fitting soundtrack attached as well. The recent Mumbai terror attacks must have shocked everybody, but I was kinda surprised to find how hard this catastrophe hit me, staying glued to the telly [...]
Tim Robbins's "Dead Man Walking" is one of my all-time favorite movies, and it's got one of my all-time favorite soundtracks, so this will likely not be my only post about its music. Robbins's brother, David Robbins, composed the wonderful, earthy score, which is unfortunately out-of-print. But for my money, it's the many songs by an all-star cast of Tim Robbins's friends that give the movie its soul. Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Michelle Shocked and others all contributed original work to the film, and while it was Bruce Springsteen's title track contribution that earned [...]

CD REVIEW Gaudi + Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan: Dub Qawwali (Six Degrees) buy CD : hear samples I've weighed in before on remixes of great vocalists (see Oct. 2005 review of Ladysmith Black Mambazo's Chillout Sessions ). So you won't be surprised that I approached this album with skepticism. And having listened, I'm still skeptical. Gaudi is a talented artist and his dubtronica often blends surprisingly well [...]

People still come here for music? You're all more loyal than Michael Jackson's fans. Other mp3 sites have been taking up my internet play time and I've had less time to update my own. In any case, heres a bunch to make up for lost ground. Song: Tere Hundiya Sundiya Mehbooba by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Album: Revelations by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Song: [...]
