A bit of old-school gangasta rap, because NWA are awesome. This song, which was featured in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas heavily samples Charles Wright's classic "Express Yourself", which you will have heard, even if you didn't realise it. A lot poppier than you'd ever expect NWA to be, really. Still awesome, mind. Download NWA - "Express Yourself" Review of We Are Scientists at Rock City from Saturday soon!

If you live in or around the general Long Beach area and you go anywhere at all after dark, you've undoubtedly heard the buzz about DJ duo MASHED POTATOS (that is spelled correctly. cross my heart). DJ's Dan & Dan are most noted for packing the walls of 7th & Cherry's Que Sera on bi-weekly [...]

After I saw Public Enemy in its top 8 MySpace friends, I approached The Weather Underground about contributing a post for I Used to Love H.E.R., a series in which artists/bloggers/writers discuss their most essential or favorite hip-hop albums ( read intro ). The four guys – Ryan, Shoichi, Harley and Diego – put together a mix tape of sorts, each contributing entries for their favorite records. The LA band plays Saturday at Modified in Phoenix. Read about the group at the LA Times' The Guide . [...]

Last night Highlighter ventured down on a wet and windy night to check bucktoothed bee-boppers 1990s who happened to be supported by one of my favourite Perth bands at the moment, the Dirty Secrets. I was a tad worried about what the show was going to be like as I had heard that 1990s had put out a bulletin to their myspace friends to message them back to get your name on the door. This was obviously just to fatten the crowd a little as ticket [...]
Charles Wright and his Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band might have had the most unnecessarily long band name ever. But Lawd have mercy, their 1971 record "Express Yourself" has a funk so stank, I want to wipe it down with a wet nap. Back in 1988, NWA rhymed over the top to make the Golden Age classic of the same name. For a group known for pioneering the Gangsta genre, it was a pretty lighthearted
Other than waking up to the concept of Monday in general, veering into the mindless mainstream is one of my least favorite activities... I hate the mainstream Hollywood movies with more violence than plot, the music with more studio chicanery than... visit for more mp3's & random revelations

The Passion of the Weiss and Straight Bangin' have called for bloggers to compile lists of their 25 favorite hip-hop albums and there's been a nice response so far. The lists that are submitted will be integrated using a simple weighted scoring system to create a kind of overall internet-consensus master list. It's a fun project and a nice, challenging exercise... particularly for someone who hasn't really compiled a list before (like me). I definitely enjoy reading them, but I've always felt that lists can be a bit arbitrary (especially those as openly subjective as "25 favorites"). [...]

Welcome to a new week - and a special blog entry blowing out some of the best remix and DJ releases produced over the last few years. This list is by no means all-inclusive, but it is stuff that I have come to enjoy. In some cases I do not know who released these tracks- if you have the info, drop me a line. Likewise, if you have a song or mix for me to listen to, please send it to me via email. This is a little stretch for me - a challenge really - since I normally do [...]
