If you were wondering where to be every night this week, it's most likely going to be Strange Matter. There's a whole bunch of great shows coming up in the next few days. Broken Water are touring again after a long hiatus and have a show coming up on Wednesday, May 15 at Strange Matter with Canary Oh Canary, Whoa and Hoax Hunters . THe group's recent LP "Tempest" is full of big sounds and melodic fuzz reminiscent of Sonic Youth. [...]

Photo by Bobby Russell Prior to joining O'Brother in 2008, frontman Tanner Merritt had compiled a collection of songs that didn't quite fit in with his new group's aggressive atmospheric sludge attack. Not wanting to see the music languish and vanish, Merritt took the time to track a solo record at Glow in the Dark Studios with producer and engineer Matt McClellan. But then life happened. Both Merritt and McClellan got busy with their respective artistic endeavors and the record languished. Then it vanished. For a couple of years anyway. [...]

Photo by Christy Parry Easily one of Atlanta's hardest working bands, sludgy alt-rockers and committed road dogs O'Brother have announced a string of May shows that includes a half-dozen dates opening for '90s grunge kings Alice in Chains. For a band that usually associates themselves with more contemporary and like-minded acts such as Manchester Orchestra, Circa Survive, Thrice and the Dear Hunter, the pairing might seem a little odd, but O'Brother is clearly embracing the opportunity to connect with some of their musical forebears. The two-week stint includes performances at Rock On the Range, [...]
Wasn't Rocklahoma a hair metal festival at one point? I guess the times change. Today, the promoters of the Memorial Day Oklahoma hoedown announced the lineup for the 2013 iteration of the festival and there are a lot of modern bands on there like The Sword, All That Remains, Alice In Chains, Asking Alexandria, Bullet ... While the vinyl split between Manchester Orchestra and Thrice is long gone, some good soul uploaded a rip of Manchester Orchestra's contribution, a 14 minute epic cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" with help from O'Brother . I've ripped the youtube stream to mp3, download it below. MP3 // DON'T SPEAK (NO DOUBT COVER)

Apologies for these much-too-late lists that are about to get splashed on the pages of this blog, but I feel like my time in 2012 got cutoff before I could make my closing statements and wrap my head around what transpired last year. I'll try to keep things brief and tidy as possible, but I've been known to let my words get away from me some, and there's considerable ground to cover. Hopefully you'll indulge me. With that let's turn our attention to local videos, which seemed to be in scarcer supply than they were in 2011. And [...]

As far as I'm concerned Manchester Orchestra are front in center when it comes to records I'm anticipating this year. From a recent tweet made on their official twitter, it appears the band will be releasing something new w/ Thrice and O'brother . Details are sparse at the moment, but I'll update with any more developments.

It's been over three years since O'Brother played in Raleigh and two since I've seen the mind-blowing post-punk-rockers put on their dazzling live show. In those past few years the band has been busy playing sold out shows with the likes of Manchester Orchestra and Thrice all over the continent, but alas the Georgia based group is finally making their way out on a headlining tour for the first time in what feels like ages. Since my last encounter with the O'Bros the band had put out a highly acclaimed debut full-length and signed to Triple Crown Records, a wonderful [...]

By Matt Arena The 2012 summer festival season has been a great one. Though at times it may have felt more like a Jack White/The Black Keys festival tour, there were some rather pleasant surprises. The inaugural year for Firefly Festival was quite possibly the best of the summer, and the incredibly well organized (and Metallica curated) Orion Music + More Festival both prove that you don’t need to stick to any of the major mainstays to have a great ...

Today O'brother released their new EP Basement Window , featuring re-imagined tracks from last years Garden Window . You can stream "Lay Down" over at their Facebook right now. Pick up the whole thing via iTunes

If there is one column on this blog that is crucial for me to be able to understand and organize the sometimes disjointed mess that is the Atlanta music scene, it's this one. And yet, somehow I've allowed myself to become distracted by life (and bakeries and such), and I've missed two consecutive months of ATL Records to Listen For . This makes me sad in more ways than one. For shame, Moe. FOR. SHAME. But here we are getting ready to head into the fall and, wouldn't you know it, there's a nice new [...]

Besides being a classic movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? has one of the greatest film soundtracks of all time. Here are some of my favorite soulful tracks from the Coen brothers' film. Last-day-of-tour pranks are the stuff of legends. Nakedness, piping sex noises through the PA, messing with a band's gear while they play, nakedness, more nakedness... why are onstage pranks always all about the twig n' berries? Thrice and O'Brother decided to keep their clothes on when they played a prank on Animals as Leaders during [...]

Thrice The farewell tour for Thrice is winding down as this was the last night with openers O'Brother and Animals as Leaders . Thrice's final show will be a multi-hour affair with no openers at the Observatory . O'Brother O'Brother really blew me away. Tapping into a primordial sludge in the vein of Queens of [...]
Thrice's Farewell Tour was the last chance for all the devoted and die-hard fans to see the melodic hardcore outfit before their indefinite hiatus. I consider myself a newly minted Thrice fan, despite being introduced to them four years ago thanks to their tour with Rise Against. With the release of their new album Major/Minor, [...]
