Leonard Cohen, The O2, Dublin

The last time this reviewer saw this much Leonard Cohen music, it was a pain in the arse, literally. The contrast between the old Point Depot that night during an often inspiring three and a half hour marathon tribute set (that resulted in a numb posterior) with the wonderful layout in the new O2 could not have been greater. Hard seats and dubious sight lines have been replaced by an awe-inspiring fully-seated comfortable amphitheatre with precision sound (perhaps not loud enough in the Mars seats) and a sense that finally, here is a purpose built venue where you [...]

Can You Gig It?: Smirnoff Experience: U.R The Night feat. Pet Shop Boys, Little Boots @ Matter, The O2, 10.7.09

Can You Gig It?: Smirnoff Experience: U.R The Night feat. Pet Shop Boys, Little Boots @ Matter, The O2, 10.7.09 It's a fact of modern gig-going that the more brands get involved, the more unwieldy become blog post headers. Hence that displeasing title up there. Peh. Anyway, Louise Doherty went to Matter for the latest Smirnoff Original Nights extravaganza, and came back with a newfound respect for Little Boots. And a tattooed tit. Crowdsourcing is best known as that thing people do when they're too lazy to use Google. Y'know, asking your Facebook friends or Twitter followers to find you a cheesetastic club in Margate, suggest a birthday present for your [...]

London Live: 13-19 July

London Live: 13-19 July Gig Of The Week - Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Mew - O2 Arena Although ordinarily I would never recommend a gig at the corporate cowshed, this little soiree should be one of the gigs of the year for those who attend. Not only is it probably the last chance to catch Trent Reznor for quite some time, earlier this year he claimed that NiN were done with touring for the foreseeable future, but also see the iconic Jane's Addiction and the excellent Mew. Elsewhere in town we have the Summer Series at Somerset [...]

Madonna pays tribute to Michael Jackson

Madonna pays tribute to Michael Jackson Touching. They both were icons of a very special time of pop music. I wonder if this is just for the 02 arena or an on-going thing for the rest of her extra "leg" of the tour. She must've really loved him, or just wants the attention. Keep in mind this is the same woman who formerly refused to appear in Michael's "In The Closet" video unless Jackson appeared with her in public in complete drag. PSB @ The O2, London: A review [spoilers]

PSB @ The O2, London: A review [spoilers] It was ace. I know they are a bit tetchy about people making recordings at gigs, but these lo-fi, wobbly moments really shouldn't be anything to be concerned about. It'll help me remember what was a fantastic night from an act who are still managing to surprise and innovate 25 years on. Well done, guys! Best bit: Neil's cube head when he came on stage. Kerazy!

Pet Shop Boys Live in the 02!

Pet Shop Boys Live in the 02! It's gig time and tomorrow night I see the Pets for the fourth time live in concert. The first time was in 1999 in The Point in Dublin (now reborn as the O2 incidentally) avec the Mexican Ex (henceforth known as t'ExMex). It wasn't a sellout and they barely filled half the venue. Oopsies! They were pretty good though. The second time was in London at the Astoria (RIP) for their Release tour. Again with t'ExMex. Amazingly that was my first ever visit to London, where I now live! 'Acoustic' and great atmosphere. [...]

Nine Inch Nails / Jane's Addiction tour adds two UK dates

You know when you get woken up by the smell of someone cooking bacon, and by the time you've lumped downstairs you find a plate of bacon rolls waiting for you? It's awesome, isn't it? Well, today we had a similar experience with Trent Reznor, only instead of free, pork-based breakfast treats, it was an email containing details of the pre-sale of tickets for two UK Summer arena shows. Mmmm, equally tasty. The two dates are part of NIN's tour alongside Jane's Addiction, mooted by Reznor to be the last [...]

Leonard Cohen Announces Irish Dates

Leonard Cohen is to return to Ireland this summer for three gigs. The legendary songwriter will play The O2, Dublin, on July 19 and 20, and The Odyssey Arena, Belfast, on July 26. His dates last year at The Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, were heralded as "a cultural event of Biblical dimensions", so the new dates are expected to sell out ultra-fast. Voted Best International Live Performance at this years' Meteor Awards, Cohen's three sold out Irish dates broke sales records as the fastest selling concert of all time and garnered 5 star reviews across the board. Tickets [...]

Michael Jackson Sells Out 50 Shows, Has Weird Face [Pyt Uk]

Michael Jackson Sells Out 50 Shows, Has Weird Face [Pyt Uk] Hey remember those 50 Michael Jackson shows in London we announced yesterday ? Well, they sold out. If you live in London, have lots of money, and constantly dream that things could be as good as they were when you were eight - well, you're SOL. More than a million tickets were sold, so we really don't know how you missed. A million is a lot. Well, if you can't make it, at least you can "enjoy" these great closeups we found of what MJ's face looks like these days. Dude had his surgeon put in a [...]

Topical: Michael Jackson returns, and I'll be there to witness it.

Topical: Michael Jackson returns, and I'll be there to witness it. Michael Jackson- Xcape (Link 2) Michael Jackson- Pretty Young Thing (Demo) (U-Tern Edit) (Link 2) I've been waiting for this day for a long, long time. I'm a Michael Jackson fan, (pre-meltdown at least) and the chance to see him live has been a long time coming. There is something about this man, something beyond all the shit that has started to infect his public image, transforming MJ from a super star and world treasure to an absolute joke. He represents quintisential pop [...]

So how is that Michael Jackson super-priority ticket sale going?

Let's ask Twitterfall , shall we? tbush: Bugger! Frantically trying to get Michael Jackson tickets via the O2 customer site and the site is down. Not cool! tkei: Wife is trying to buy tickets to see Michael Jackson in concert and the servers have crashed. No surprises there really. Boborato: Here we go once again for Michael Jackson's tickets... stucked on "Your wait time is approximately 15 minutes or more"... patrick: Wow after 30 minutes in line for Michael Jackson, the website updated.... now approx 14 minutes wait time :) [...]

Michael Jackson's London tour dates

Michael Jackson's London tour dates The tour dates have been announced and it seems that Michael will be in London the entirity of July. This Is It is the event not to miss this year (the event to miss this year: Madonna's Sticky & Sweet extension). I am mucho excited about this and will do everything to go see him. I went to his last tour ( HIStory ) and it was just spectacular. And if this is really the farewell tour, I wouldn't miss it for the world. There's a lot of talk about how he couldn't do what we [...]

Michael Jackson to do concert in London

Michael Jackson to do concert in London It's about time. And I am sure he can pull it off, he's MJ. I hope it's like a Celine-Dion-esque residency at O2 and not just a one-off. I wonder what happened to the demos from the Bahrain record contract and if they will ever surface.

The following complaint about sponsorship is brought to you by MoanAtSponsors.com

Given that the Millennium Dome is now styled as the O2 Arena, it might seem a little late to complain about the creep of sponsorship across the venue, but this does seem a step too far : Coca-Cola has signed a sponsorship deal with O2 arena-owners AEG Europe to become "official pouring rights partner" at the London venue. What, exactly, is a "pouring rights partner", official or otherwise?

Photos: Coldplay, The O2, Dublin

Photos: Coldplay, The O2, Dublin With just a couple of days to Christmas, Coldplay became one of the first bands to play Dublin's newly revamped Point Depot. The venue's rechristening under the corporate banner of the O2 should have been a sign that Coldplay too, are now a huge corporate entity. Having easily sold out two nights in the O2 and with a huge outdoor summer show coming to the capital in 2009, tickets are being touted outside for well over €100 as fans made the long walk down the quays in the drizzling December rain. We had wanted to bring you a [...]

Photos: Kings of Leon, The O2, Dublin

Photos: Kings of Leon, The O2, Dublin Kings of Leon officially opened the O2 on Friday night and by all accounts, the band, the set and the venue were all highly praised. The State review team weren't present as we were locked in a DJ Battle Royale at our Christmas Party with Fight Like Apes and Super Extra Bonus Party which went swimmingly (locked being the operative word). We did manage to send photographer Claire Weir to the O2 however to capture some visual reference of the Followill brothers in action. Huzzah! [...]

Why Girls Aloud are so fierce…

Why Girls Aloud are so fierce… You know, their budget for the tour couldn't have been large and they didn't get many people to work on it, but this is one of the fiercest entrances I have ever seen. And although I haven't forgiven them for their latest album cover, I have to give them props for being the most ferosh girl band today.
