TMZ reports that Don Cornelius, the mahogany-voiced creator of the beloved TV institution Soul Train , was found dead early this morning at his home in Sherman Oaks, California. The cause of death appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cornelius was 75. Born in Chicago, Cornelius started out as a journalist before launching Soul Train in 1971. He produced, wrote, and hosted the show for 22 years, finally letting a succession of other hosts take over for him in 1993. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the great soul and blues wailer Etta James died of complications from leukemia this morning in Riverside, California. She was 73. As a teenager, James was discovered in 1950 by the bandleader Johnny Otis (who also died this week), and she scored her first minor hit, "Roll With Me, Henry," in 1954. She toured with Little Richard and went on to sign with the great blues and early-rock label Chess, where she recorded for 18 years. Her best-known song, "At Last," is one of the all-time classic first-dance wedding [...]
The Associated Press reports that Johnny Otis, the Greek-American singer and bandleader who did a ton to introduce black music to white audiences, died on Tuesday at home in Altadena, California. He was 90. As a bandleader, Otis scored is first hit with "Harlem Nocturne" in 1945, but he's still best-known for 19502s "Willie And The Hand Jive." In the immediate pre-rock era, Otis dominated Billboard's R&B charts, and talents like Etta James and Big Mama Thornton sang in his bands. He later worked as a radio host and wrote "Every Beat Of My Heart" for Gladys [...]

Rolling Stone reports that Jimmy Castor, the great '70s hard-funk bandleader, died of unknown causes in Las Vegas yesterday. He was 64. As the main behind the Jimmy Castor bunch, Castor perfected a form of nasty, uncompromising dance-funk, perhaps best exemplified by the utterly crushing 1973 hit "Troglodyte." (Chuck Eddy, the great iconoclastic rock critic, ranked the Jimmy Castor Bunch's Phase Two as one of the 10 greatest metal albums of all time in his book Stairway To Hell, which ought to give some idea how heavy this stuff sounded.) Castor's songs have [...]

So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band, a show preview, or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we'll just round 'em all up for you. Most of these videos are of artists we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won't be telling you much about the bands themselves, just some musings that really aren't worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a trillion. Do it! [...]

The Washington Post reports that soul-pop singer Dobie Gray died yesterday morning in Nashville. He was 69, and no cause of death has been reported. Gray was famous for hits like "Drift Away," "The In Crowd," and "Loving Arms." Born Lawrence Darrow Brown in Houston, he came to soul music through gospel. Over a long and varied career, he also dabbled in country-pop, psych-rock, and musical theater, even spending more than two years in the L.A. production of Hair . (Actually, "Drift Away" is itself practically a country song.) He scored his final hit in [...]

Spinner reports that Andrea True, the singer behind the immortal 1976 disco hit "More, More, More" died earlier this month in Kingston, New York of undisclosed causes. She was 68. True had one of the weirder and more interesting life stories of any hitmaking singer. Born in Nashville, True had attempted to launch a career as a legitimate actress before becoming a full-time porn star - a career she returned to after her music career ended. She recorded "More, More, More" while stranded in Jamaica, where she'd filmed a commercial. After that one hit, she recorded a [...]

TMZ reports that the absurdly charismatic late-'80s/early-'90s rap star Heavy D died earlier today at a hospital in L.A. He was 44, and this is just massively sad. The Overweight Lover was born in Jamaica and moved to New York as a child. He and his group, the Boyz, first arrived with their 1987 album Living Large ; their 1989 follow-up Big Tyme was one of the first rap tapes I ever owned. On these records, Heavy pioneered a lively, friendly, hugely accessible form of pop-rap that, along with records by DJ Jazzy [...]
