Obits - a band born from the ashes of several beloved acts: Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Edsel, Shortstack, and Pitchfork (no, not that Pitchfork). The common thread running between the majority of these bands is Rick Froberg, the vocalist and guitarist who lends Obits their familiar, yet exhilarating, sound. And it is Obits' guitar work that continuously steals the show, including on new single, "Shift Operator." The band sounds like a veritable throwback with overt palm-muting, intertwining guitar lines, and a layer of fuzz that thankfully cannot be described as lo-fi. No, Obits is nothing if not a [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Exclusive , Q + A Sub Pop Records Rick Froberg has called Brooklyn home for more than a decade, but the Obits frontman cut his musical teeth in the San Diego scene of the early '90s, playing first with Pitchfork and later Drive Like Jehu -- bands whose dusty garage-influenced rock 'n' roll was the antithesis to the alt-rock and grunge then sweeping the rest of [...]
Susan Rotolo, one of Bob Dylan's muses, has died . Rotolo met Dylan in 1961 and the pair moved in together the following year. It was her background - child of radical parents - which helped shape Dylan's political direction; her depature to live in Europe then opened a second front, as a lonely Dylan wrote Boots Of Spanish Leather. She left Dylan for good in 1963, believing him untrustworthy, but not before she appeared on the cover of the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. A full life of activism and a forty year [...]

Clare Amory of Excepter has died from cancer . I don't think I can improve on the words of Excepter's Jon on his SSSP blog: Yesterday, the Space Shuttle Discovery departed Earth on it's final mission. Among the cargo aboard, was one astronaut who's name was not publicly announced. My beautiful friend, and band mate- Clare Armory has left our Planet Earth. Her soul has been set free to bless this mad universe that we all live in. I know how difficult that it is to lose a loved one to cancer. I lost my mother nine [...]

The death has been announced of Marvin Sease , star of the Southern American Chitlin Circuit. Originally a gospel singer, Sease drifted towards R&B in the late 80s. He originally funded his own solo album - also called Marvin Sease - but when London-Mercury records picked him up, the record got an extra track and a major rerelease. That extra track was this, Candy Licker: What it lacked in subtlety it made up for in underground popularity and Sease took the name Candy Licker as a nom de stage. [...]
