Joan of Arc – Life Like Has it really been a year since Joan of Arc released Flowers ? And Boo Human a year before that? Has Ripple really been around that long? Yes, it has, so this makes the third time a Joan of Arc disc was hauled into the Ripple office by postman Sal, and the third time I fell under the intensely unique spell of mercurial front man Tim Kinsella. With regard to Flowers , in my review I commented on [...]

On the East Side of Gainesville there is a salad (and pizza) worth traveling for. Trust me, we have. Our latest trek, a minor one compared to most, was sixty miles straight across Route 24 dodging small towns soliciting boiled peanuts and Domino's pizza drivers. This time, as I savored the salad, I began envisioning my own version. Friday, after work, I brought those visions to life. Lightning Sholay Sallet ( printable version ) For the salad: -30 ounces mixed [...]
It was pretty much unavoidable, but in a good way. That is, the posting of yet another mega MP3 mix full of 2011 songs that many of you have probably never heard of before. Unlike other mixes, this one has been in the works for many weeks as an on-going project, and has evolved quite [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Punk outfit Occult Detective Club is a nice reminder of the new wave punk I always liked listening to. I'm reminded of high energy bands like the Ramones and Suicide Machines when I listen to them, yet there's something even more to them that makes them original. They've just released their sophomore album "Crimes" and have been hitting the road non-stop in support of it. The band is playing in Richmond on March 15. Their website says TBA so I assume it's a house show. But I'll let you know more details [...]
Texan quartet Occult Detective Club released their second album Crimes late last month. The record bears serious echoes of the first wave of US punk bands, with hefty shades of The Ramones in particular. It's more than a homage to the golden age of punk, they have refined this sound to a fine art adding too [...]

Occult Detective Club 's "Crimes" will be released on February 15th through Alive Records on CD, digital and limited edition vinyl formats. The first vinyl pressing of 500 copies comes with free MP3 download. Occult Detective Club will be kicking-off their Crimes 2011 Tour with a hometown Record Release Show in Denton, TX on Friday, February 25th.

The band's name sounds like they're rivals of Scooby Doo's outfit, and there's no way in Hell these cats are old enough to remember rock and roll radio, but I'm going to allow it simply because C'mon Levi is a bloody-lip of perfect manic mod energy. I'm not sure what they got in the water down there in Denton, but Occult Detective Club looks like they just smashed your mailbox and sounds like they just quantum leaped (or lept?) from Queens in '75 or London in '78. Mind you, nothing fancy here, [...]

On their new album Crimes , the marvellously named Occult Detective Club play a mix of straight-up, raw, no nonsense first wave punk and new wave music with a focus on catchy choruses, thoughtful lyrics and a DIY mentality. Think the Ramones , with echoes of The Jam , even Sham 69 thrown in the blender with the passion and forward thinking of Billy Bragg. The Denton, Texas-based band previously released their ten-song debut LP Tortures last spring on Red Lounge Records, and fellow Texas gore-hounds [...]
