We've had recorded music long enough so that a chart of the history of a certain sound is starting to look kind of Escher-esque. In this case, it's a sound that was popular in the late 80s and early 90s that was based on British bands that were indebted to their New Wave forebearers, which inspires Anglophile Americans to ape that same sound that then gets re-loved 20 years later by another group of Americans. And there's a staircase that connects with itself somewhere in there. The early 902s retro sound first popped into my ears last year [...]

Alternative rock band, The Ocean Blue (TOB) wowed listeners with its brand of breezy Brit pop back in the early 1990s. Amazingly enough, the TOB was not British at all but a sweet melodic quartet from Hershey, PA. The band recorded its self-titled record back in 1989 to rave reviews and instantly caught fire with modern rock hits, "Between Something and Nothing" and "Drifting and Falling." The album showcased the band's ability to perform ethereal, easy listening songs with soothing saxophones, strummy guitars and bright keyboards meshed with introspective lyrics about pondering life and love. Sire Records signed the band to a [...]

"...Of all the stupid things I could have thought / This was the worst / I started to believe / That I was born at seventeen / And all the stupid things / The letters and the broken verse / Stayed hidden at the bottom of the drawer / They'd always been / And now I plough through piles / Of bills, receipts and credit cards / And tickets and the Daily News / And sometimes I just . . .Wanna go back to my home town / Though I know it'll never be the same / Back to [...]

For a band whose history notably features a major car accident and a flood, guitarist and singer Noel Kelly's The Hush Now certainly seems to operate as agent of Fate's whimsy. Which is why we were surprised when we checked in with Mr. Kelly recently ahead of Thursday's record release party for the Boston-based quintet's well-received, self-titled 2008 debut. Surprised because Kelly talks of a five-year plan and of having songs ready for a third record, despite the fact that as of this writing he had not finished a second that was begun last summer prior to the [...]
"Blue Skies Daisy days" is the beautiful title Planting Seeds Records have chosen for their new compilation. The album will be released on December 3, and 21 bands are involved, both the label's own and friends of the label. A portion of the proceeds goes to the non-profit "The Keep A Breast foundation", who has a mission to help eradicate breast cancer. A great cause, and a great album. All of the songs are very melodic and most of them are in the indie-pop category, plus a few more noisy ones and some [...]

![Review: The Hush Now -- The Hush Now [MP3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1194944_lg.jpg)
Recently constituted Boston quartet The Hush Now trade in light but dense guitar pop in the mold of the great U.K. guitar bands of the mid- and late '80s. Bands like The House Of Love , as well as certain American successors including The Ocean Blue and Poole . All of which makes The Hush Now 's self-titled debut -- perhaps with the exception of odd, throw-away Irish folksy bookending tracks that continue to perplex us -- a very enjoyable way to spend three-quarters of an hour. Mid-tempo strummer "Vancouver" provides a schematic [...]

>> Something we did not know until about 9:40 Tuesday night: shoegaze geniuses Fleeting Joys are about to release a new record. It may or may not be titled Occult Radiance , and it is set for release on Fleeting Joy 's own Only Forever label Aug. 11. Best of all, the Northern California duo has posted a megamix of sorts of samples from all the tracks on the album as an MP3 at its blog. We'll save you the trip over there by reposting the thing below. For those unfamiliar with the band, [...]
The Ocean Blue - Ways And Means (from See The Ocean Blue , 1996) The Adventures - Marianne (from Lions And Tigers And Bears , 1993) Poole - Anyway (from amongwhomweshine , 1999) Horse - Hold Me Now (from God's Home Movie , 1994) Solar Twins - Rock The Casbah (from Solar Twins , 1999) The Beautiful South - 36D (from 0898 , 1992)

MP3 : The Ocean Blue - The Relatives (1993) Another one from the olden days that I encountered whilst listening to music on random. The lyric vacillates between a distaste for hyperbole and homages to Elvis, The Beatles, and The Doors (the relatives, I suppose). The Ocean Blue managed to put a lot of enjoyable hooks in their music, at least on "Beneath the Rhythm and Sound." Their music wasn't quite 80s and it certainly wasn't 90s. At least the 80s and 90s I went through. [...]

Oh my! It has been ten years since I started my senior year at Ursinus College. And those alumni people bombarded me with propaganda to go to homecoming this Saturday. Of course I caved. So, in memory of the best years of my life (and Joe's too, he was an honorary student for 4 years) eventhough I remember only about half of it, I compiled some songs that are a propos to those years, and also released during the same time. Gene - We Could Be Kings G. Love [...]
