There's a stringently defined set of rules for the position of people in an elevator. Think about it for a second. When you get on an elevator by yourself, you're likely to stand in the middle; when another passenger joins you, you'll almost certainly shift to one of the corners. If you're outgoing, you'll probably move to the corner with the buttons and push the appropriate one for your new companion. If, like me, you're a little more insular, you'll shift to the corner opposite the buttons and look at your feet. Nobody stays in the middle and [...]
For those of you who cling to every word I write this band may come as no surprise to you. I first brought Oceans to the attention of you Waveriders in my "Rumors Heard in MySpace" feature and recommended that you all stop by to check out the bands tunes. I believe I mentioned that they have a progressive rock vibe going on without being so over the top that you begin to question your own intelligence, and I after listening to their seven song disc called Endurance , I stand by that statement. This is the [...]
A year ago, Racer and I tossed around ideas of how we could pass on some music information to you that you may have missed through the course of your normal lives. We settled on this feature that you're reading right now. In the past year, we've taken you all over the map and shined a spotlight in some really bizarre places, and on some really bizarre bands. This episode is no different, my friends! This month, we're gonna' spend a great amount of time in France. Why? Well, France seems to be hoppin' right now with some fantastic music [...]
John Maus , when he's taking time out from Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, has found the time to release some great solo records. 2007's Love is Real was described as 'an upbeat Joy Division' which isn't true but it gives you an idea of the sound. Like being deep in an an ocean of synths where everything echoes and everyone's sad. Do Your Best is a standout track and Too much Money is by far the most up-tempo track on the record. METAL UP YOUR ASS: Metal Heads Are Everywhere I Go
At the Metal Injection Blog Factory, we are all preparing for our road trip to Worcester for the annual NEW ENGLAND METAL AND HARDCORE FESTIVAL. And by preparing, I mean doing mediocre research to interview bands and downloading old school hip hop to blast at 3am to piss of Rob and Frank. Oh, and getting [...]

Water, Water, Everywhere: Too Many 'Ocean' Bands, Not Enough Quality
It wasn't too long ago that people were complaining about all the band names with bear in them. And then there was wolf. But here's one that's been quietly creeping up on us: Ocean. Not sure why we haven't noticed the proliferation of ocean bands to this point, because there are a lot of ocean bands. A lot of bad ocean bands. They range from the heavy end of the spectrum with The Ocean to the wannabe art-nouveau twee-pop of Hey Ocean! to the generic pop-punk [...]

CALLING ALL VOCALISTS: BEST BAND EVER SEEKS REPLACEMENT
No, not Tool. But Berlin, Germany's The Ocean certainly give them a run for their money in "best band ever" category. About a year ago Kip and I saw The Ocean headline a small NYC venue - before which we interviewed guitarist/mastermind Robin Staps over a round of whiskeys - and they literally made all [...]
Album: Isis - Wavering Radiant
Isis Wavering Radiant Conspiracy Records 04 May 2009 by Hazel Robinson Aaron Turner has described Wavering Radiant as "the closest [Isis] will get to pop," and said that it's less rhythmically weird than previous albums. They've been working with Joe Barresi, rather than band staple Matt Bayles, as producer and apparently made the effort to all be living [...]

Crustcake Pics - NYC Shows 2/12 - 2/18
by theseseans (NYC)You have a three day weekend? I do, sure hope you do too because this Sunday's metal offerings to NYC is fucking ridiculous. Greenpoint's Europa is hosting A Storm Of Light and Zoroaster, while Ocean, Salome, Riff Cannon, and Batillus are playing Public Assembly in Williamsburg. If the winter already has you so broken that you can't wallow in the sea of doom these bands will be
Onward Destroyers: SALOME
Welcome to the latest installment of Revelations of Doom; I'm Grim Kim (or Kim Kelly, if you prefer), and I'll be your guide to this week's glorious mashup of extreme metal education, barbarian wrath, and highly-biased amplifier worship. Once again, we'll be walking the doomed path, but this time, our journey takes us down below, [...]
The Fifth Ocean
In doing some research for another story about the Aral Sea, I discovered that in 2000 the International Hydrographic Organization created a fifth ocean, the Southern Ocean, out of portions of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. The Southern Ocean completely surrounds Antarctica and extends from the coast of Antarctica north to 60 degrees south latitude. The Southern Ocean is now the fourth largest of the world's five oceans (after the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean, but larger than the Arctic Ocean). I feel silly (ashamed?) that I'm just learning [...]

DOOM FANS: DOWNLOAD BATILLUS' SELF-TITLED EP FOR FREE!
Batillus, one of New York's best up and coming doom acts, have released their self-titled EP for free download here. I could tell you how awesome it is, but luckily for both you and me, Cosmo Lee - who has written for just about every metal publication under the sun - has already reviewed the [...]
New Releases: Pig Destroyer, The Bronx, Light This City
Yet another slow release week. Damn the Christmas season. The only release I'm actually excited about is Burial's . Last year's Untrue was a 2007 favorite. And Denison Witmer could be good. Really, though... what else is going to be worth listening to this week? I don't even know. An album from Kevin Costner ? That could be interesting. Who wants to take bets on how many songs I get through before I have to shut that one off? :: Adversary [...]
