LWE's 80th Podcast was a live set by Octave One recorded at The Underground in Dublin featuring some classic, newly released, and special unreleased tracks. In their own words, "This is not a DJ set. No MP3s, CDs, or even vinyl records were harmed during the making of this podcast." Be sure to add it to your collection before it's archived this Friday, March 30th.

★★★★☆ The Burden Brothers kick off their own commemorative remix party, another chapter in an illustrious 20-year history, to follow their vinyl issue Revisited series, with uncompromising forward-thinking tech-house/techno sound-offs "Dema" and "Meridian." Think Octave One and "Blackwater" is always in close attendance, and it's Alter Ego who are given the keys to unlocking the crown jewels, doing a decent, uppity house job of updating/keeping devotees happy. Whether through low furrowing from Sandwell District's progressive raising of spirits, Aril Brikha's sleek and slimline punch and efficiency, and Cari Lekebusch and Ken Ishii [...]

Brothers in rhythm Lenny and Lawrence Burden comprise Octave One , one of the foremost purveyors of true Detroit techno. Ignoring fleeting fads and trends over the past two decades, the Burdens have stayed the course while continually pushing and expanding their musical horizons. In February the globetrotting Motor City act will release Revisited: Here, There, and Beyond , a remix compilation that takes songs previously released on their 430 West label and embellishes them with a 2012 spin. German techno/producer Alexander Kowalski takes on remix duties with grace and style on "I Need Release" [...]

How was 2011 for you? 2011 for us started out with a bang and just kept snowballing! Highlights? Klubbers Day in Spain, WOMB in Japan, The Awakenings Event in The Netherlands, Fabric in London, Sydney Festival in Sydney, Australia were all really memberable gigs for us at least onstage. Lowlights? Having our almost entire show equipment "lost" by Ailitalia, never to be seen or heard from again. The six grueling flights we had to take to play a gig in Macedonia (but the [...]

woohoo! tech house fridays are back at last.. for some reason, there has been a lot of talk (mostly coming from me) about visiting berlin and the infamous techno institution that is berghain . the change in season seems to have brought a debaucherous twinkle to peoples eyes, and talk of the nefarious goings-on in that old power station only serves to fuel that fire. so too does the excellent mix series that the club has been releasing sporadically for six years. resident marcel fengler manned the wheels for the most [...]

Last we heard from Detroit techno icon Kevin Saunderson he was a wee bit angry at Italian duo Supernova for sampling his track "The Sound." Fortunately things were amicably resolved — doesn't everyone like a happy ending? — and Saunderson has carried on. Known for his classic techno and house tracks, Saunderson continues to look to the future. He's on tour this summer as a solo artist and with Derrick May as Hi Tek Soul, and he's also relaunched Inner City and Octave One. Saunderson just dropped this phenomenal mix on us. We're not exactly sure [...]

Some more classic techno gets remixed. Another in the Octave One remixes series. This time Cari Lekebusch and Alexander Kowalski get to play. I'm going to focus on the latter. Alexander takes the remix into an unusual direction, mixing some classic Detroit techno, complete with finger clicks, with some soulful vocals. There is something very, very Carl Craig about the way that this builds slowly and the overall soundscape. And sounding like Carl is never a bad thing. Listen only. Photo by Seze Devres After a week of recuperation, LWE's Jordan Rothlein and Chris Miller offer their thoughts on this year's Unsound Festival New York. Festivals have never really been North America's strong suit, at least for house and techno. Yes, DEMF and Mutek have been providing those of us on this side of the Atlantic with expertly curated and executed festivals for over a decade now, but when contrasted with the glut of festivals over in Europe it hardly seems fair. New York, perhaps most unfairly, has always had [...]

Octave One have long been one of the more prolific techno outfits that came through in the waves of talent from Detroit during the late '80s to early '90s. Originally comprised of brothers Lawrence, Lenny and Lynell Burden, their energetic, funk infused style of techno was heralded by their 1990 debut track "I Believe" with Lisa Newberry on vocals. Soon after this they established their own record label 430 West and slowly began releasing the tracks that would make up some twenty single releases, seven albums and countless remixes. Their tracks have always possessed a raw edge, whether it's the [...]

Octave One have produced their Detroit-centric brand of techno for 21 years now, longer than some of LWE's staff have been alive. And while there have been several multi-year gaps in their discography, the Burden Brothers have never stopped pushing themselves to create something new and interact with their fans in new ways. The last decade has seen Octave One leap into the live arena, lugging their analog gear around the world to bring their vast oeuvre to life in front of audience's eyes and ears. This year the duo will release their third full-length album, Here, There and [...]

[ 430 West ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy mp3s ) The annals of electronic music are heavily populated with remixes that not only enhanced original tracks, but gained them infinitely more acclaim and exposed them to much bigger audiences. Let's face it - does anyone really know the original version of "Dooms Night" by Azzido Da Bass or did Robert Armani's "Circus Bells" stand out before Hardfloor turned it into a razor-sharp snare rolling, acid-peaking techno classic? Thought not. Unfortunately, for every defining remix, there are thousands of ill-advised [...]

Released from 430 West Records in 2000, Blackwater is an epic house tune by Octave One. The detroit techno inspired song opens with a fabulous string intro and emits feel-good vibes that "flow like the sunshine" for almost 9 minutes. Carl Kennedy "modernizes" the classic with his interpretation. While Kennedy's version does not differ greatly from the original, Kennedy's version is less organic and more electro-ish than the original. This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on September 4, 2009. As they approach their 20 year anniversary, it's hard to believe that Octave One had never performed in New York before this night, but it's true. They took full advantage of the situation and won the crowd over from the second they started their set. You can read more about them here . 20100113-OctaveOne.mp3 www.beyondbooking.com Posted in Audio, LIVE!, Mix, Podcast, Tech House, Techno
