Marc Morrissette has seen the world as a tourist, as a foreigner. Years ago, his solo work was a collection of observations and memories from his travels, held close and shared openly like sepia toned photos. The songs were stripped down, which made complete sense considering they were born in new countries and lonely hostels. Like most of us, Morrissette traded his backpack for a more permanent postal code and his songs have become more of a community than quiet observation. Octoberman is a full band experience and the addition of harmonies, tempo, horns and noisy tangents [...]

by teepoo Before October is over, I shall post this track by Octoberman of Toronto. And since it's fall you'll have to start putting on your sweaters soon. Appropriate they actually released an EP called Sweater . It's a little bit of a teaser before their upcoming LP. With delightful guitar riffs and an easy listening vocals, The Years is some delightful ear candy. Octoberman- The Years Bandcamp

It's hard to believe Marc Morrissette has been releasing "solo" material for almost seven years. Even more shocking is the constant but completely natural evolution of sound. What started as one line drawings in the journal of an isolated traveler have grown into confident, full band affairs . All things considered, I shouldn't be surprised that Marc and his band have morphed their sound again. Sweaters , a new four song teaser EP before the next full length, starts with a ramshackle quick hitter [...]
You can never go wrong with Octoberman . Marc Morrissette's one-time solo project has evolved over three full lengths into a consistently entertaining and talented full band. Just yesterday, they released a new EP called Sweater as a sort of precursor to their forthcoming fourth LP (due in 2012). I rarely use the word "jaunty" to describe the music reviewed on QBiM, but somehow that term fits tracks "Not That Kind" and "Soft and Lonely French Girl" perfectly. The latter song has a sweet horn solo midway that brings a smile to your [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

If anyone in Ottawa will be going down to Toronto for New Year's Eve, check out this event . I'd go in an instant but its going to be hard finding a place to stay. Anyone mind doing a roadtrip on NYE? Of the times I have been to Toronto, this is one of a few venues should have checked out. It would be cool to check out this venue. As part of the Tranzac ongoing fundraising campaign to keep the place running. They will be holding a show with a [...]

Sometimes pretend people (ie you, because you're on the internet) can be so much better than real ones. I can explain to my parents that the reason I have neglected them for the last little while is because I have spent most of the last week gazing at the white lines on a motorway, driving Loch Lomond around the UK for their first UK mini-tour, but deep down they'll probably still be miffed that I haven't called, written emailed or anything at all for about two weeks. You, on the other hand, have such a rich and varied [...]

It'd be your own fault though, I mean who orders takeaway soup? Suggestion: Grab some old paperbacks and get all DIY with this book strap side table. Suggestion: Watch the latest season of Weeds or The Office online because they're not out in Australia yet. Vancouver band The Abramson Singers have signed to White Whale Records to release their upcoming self-titled album on February 2. The band was born when singer-songwriter-guitarist Leah Abramson got tendonitis in her wrist. Unable to write songs on guitar, Leah borrowed an 8-track and started recording a capella vocal pieces under the name "The Abramson Singers." Now healed and playing her guitar again, Leah formed a band under the same moniker, playing her indie-folk-noir with some of Vancouver's brightest young musicians and singers. The first Abramson Singers album will be released in [...]
