White Whale Records is a Los Angeles based label that formed in 1965 and was home to the legendary surf music band "The Turtles". What? No wait….that isn't it. White Whale Records is a Vancouver based indy label that is home to such bands as Octoberman , The Mohawk Lodge and Culture Reject. I guess record label names are in short supply, kind of like Canadian Football Leage team names. If you email White Whale, then chances are you will get a reply from either Ryder Havdale (Mohawk Lodge) or Marc [...]

Look, up in the sky: It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Octoberman! Champion of melancholy alt-country, protector of talented Canadian singer-songwriters, vanquisher of bad music! Under the everyday guise of mild-mannered Vancouverite Marc Morrissette, Octoberman arrives to save the day with his poised guitar work, soft vocals, and spiritually uplifting melodies. Do not let the seemingly fragile nature of his compositions fool you: they are entwined with great care and precision, determined to ensnare all evildoers into their righteous grip of folk. (Cue little bright-eyed boy) We love [...]

XM Tracks highlights my new music discoveries via XM Radio, mostly pulled from one of these stations: X Country, XMU or The Verge. These are the two most recent songs that stayed in my head long after my head has left my car. Coconut Records - "West Coast" As a general rule, I try to avoid any band that was started by an actor. It's okay if a rock singer ends up becoming an actor (I saw Tom Waits in the classic movie The Outsiders yesterday), but [...]
Canadian Octoberman (Marc Morrissette) has recently released his Album 'Run from safety' and white whale records write the following and saves me a hell of a lot of time. Embodying the sensibilities of Neil Young's songcraft and Jack Kerouac's travelogues, These Trails won widespread praise from Uncut, Maverick, The Globe and Mail and dozens of other publications. Just as Morrissette's penchant for melancholic vocals and melodic guitar work caught the ears of critics, it won the hearts of audiences. The songwriter established Octoberman as a live institution in Vancouver, sometimes taking to the stage with [...]

We're all about love and friendship up here in Canada. White Whale Records is no exception. In this spirit of friendship, White Whale has set up a tour. Dubbed White Whale's Making Music With Your Friends Tour, it features two of its awesome acts: The Mohawk Lodge and Octoberman. Culture Reject (formerly Moco Nell) and Poorfolk also make appearances. Vancouver's The Mohawk Lodge are definitely a new favorite of mine, bringing the indie soul with tracks like "Wear 'Em Out" and "Hard Times". [...]
Daft Punk vs Madonna - Bastard Pop + Octoberman - Run From Safety

It's Wednesday, we're halfway there folks. Hump day! This morning I'm listening to Octoberman . My three-year-old loves to play music. He is pretty good at even the harmonica. He loves Jens Lekman and all this intricate music. Octoberman reminds me of Jens in a way because of the trumpets and the harmonica. The music is unique and folky which is not so much Jens, but I have a feeling Brae would love Octoberman. I may have to include some of these tracks on the next mix CD I make him. Who is Octoberman? [...]

Sometimes a journey involves a plane, a train and a backpack and sometimes it just requires looking inside yourself. Too cliche? Maybe, but in the context of Marc Morrisette's new record it is very appropriate. Octoberman started after Marc returned from his travels and wanted to write what he saw. His first record - These Trails are Old and New - was full of his observations and only used the required instruments to carry his voice. Run From Safety is a collection of songs from a man settling into [...]
You've finished school, and want to escape the routine that seems to hold you back. Travel usually leads to growth and your experiences usually result in inspiration. Such is the case for Vancouver folk artist, Mark Morrisette . Mark is the front man for the indie rock act, Kids These Days , but decided to take a break from the band and travel in 2003. The result is a collection of sparsely arranged songs he delivers under the moniker, Octoberman . Relying on [...]
