I wasn't originally planning on doing a show this evening, but decided to take my normal spot behind the microphone anyway. So the playlist didn't begin coming together until the evening of. There was no theme, it was all variety; folk to electronic to noise rock. If you missed it, here's the list: "The Crystal Cat" by Dan Deacon by Spiderman Of The Rings "A Dark God Heart" by Sleep Party People off We Were Drifting On A Sad Song [...]

Scottish Kate is a great friend of this blog and has often offered her (sometimes pithy) opinions on the world of music - and very good taste she has too. She also runs the always excellent (sometimes pithy), and often provocative blog A Burdz Eye View for all things Scottish (of course), political and musical. Here are her aural selections for 2011. The Burd's Best Songs of 2011 Well it doesn't get any easier. Though given that all my old schticks are in here aplenty [...]

Since the mid-aughts, Craig Finn has built a strong reputation by writing clever, witty and pop-culture-infused story songs as the front man for The Hold Steady . With five albums under his belt with the "world's greatest bar band" , Finn will release his solo debut, Clear Heart Full Eyes (whosetitle is a reference to Friday Night Lights), via Vagrant Records on January 24. Recorded in Austin, Texas and backed by members of White Denim, The Heartless Bastards, Phosphorescent, and Centro-matic, the 11-track set is being described by Finn as, "a bunch of songs that were outside [...]

For a while, we were worried that O'Death were going to break up, but then a surprise show at Brooklyn Bowl , followed by a new album earlier this year, and the band are back stronger than ever. 2012 will bring about a few new tour dates for the band. They'll be playing around the northeast United States with a show at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on January 21. O'Death tour dates: 1/19 - Poughkeepsie, NY - The Mug at Vassar College [...]

I entered the studio at about 9:35pm, meeting up with Stuarto, who has the time slot before mine. A quick interview about 15 minutes before my show, another few songs, and I was up. It was requested that I attempt a transition, and as indie music is my theme, and world music is his, I figured I'd kick things off with an oldie, but goodie: "The Gulag Orkestar" by Beirut. The theme of the evening, loosely, centered around folk. Indie folk, folk pop, folk rock, orchestral folk, experimental folk... [...]

photos by Tim Griffin O'Death @ The Mohawk "Outside"[ their latest album ] expands the band's Gothic-folk sound. O'Death deploys Americana elements -- banjo, violin, acoustic guitar -- to craft haunting, cinematic songs... O'Death may never top the charts but it's made a splash on the alternative and folk scenes with relentless live shows. The band's first gig after Rogers-Berry's close call was at the famed Newport Folk Festival. "We were definitely one of the more high-energy [...]

I was pretty obsessed with O'Death 's video for "Low Tide" from a few years back. The band has returned with a new album, and from it comes "Bugs". The video for "Bugs" isn't quite as creepy as that earlier video. Similarly, the song is a bit more lighthearted. Vocals are more restrained, but O'Death continues that wonderfully incessant percussive pace with emphasis on tambourine and banjo. "Bugs" is less erratic, but just as good as "Low Tide". [...]
