Aside from making heaps upon heaps of great, anguish-or-glee-filled music all day long, today's artists much of the time also dabble in the other definitions of what it means to be an "artist"--by which we mean they utilize other means...

Greg Jamie (frontman of O'Death) has announced a new band called Blood Warrior , which teams Jamie with Joey Weiss (Super Monster), Kristin Kellas, and Rubin Berger (Musee Mecanique, Laura Gibson, Mirah). Part of me actually loves the deceivingly metal-sounding band names this guy gives his acts. Apparently, the debut album from Blood Warrior has recently been finished (no word on an official release date as of yet other than "winter"), but that doesn't mean that the band is just going to sit around and patiently wait. No, they've got a 7" out on November 3rd via Ernest Jenning [...]
Earlier in the year, O'Death frontman, Greg Jamie, talked to us a little about his latest project Blood Warrior . This weekend he sent over a nicely recorded performance video of the project from dogandponymusic.net ... Many people do not want to think about September 2008. That is when a nice glob of economic feces totally hit the proverbial fan. Nevertheless, we here at GIMME TINNITUS choose to look back. To cover the Pixies , one must take the material and "make it your own." e.g. O'Death covering "Nimrod's Son" . To try and sound like the Pixies is an exercise in futility. It will only make you sound banal. That is why most Pixies covers suck. I don't feel like posting crappy Pixies covers here. You can find many examples using http://google.com/ . Have fun with that. So, let's talk about the jazzpunk of Puttin' On The Ritz . The band definitely owns this cover of "Gigantic". It may not wind up [...]

The Builders and The Butchers are my current band crush and it's all thanks to Reverend Marcus from Strawfoot . He'd managed to catch them with Those Darlins up in St. Louis and was moved enough to email me, suggesting that I should check them out. I couldn't thank him enough for thinking of me, and anyone who follows me on Twitter knows that to be the truth. The Builders and The Butchers are five Alaskans seeking refuge in Portland who have created an amalgam of gospel, country, folk, blues, clangs, bangs, choruses [...]
Foggy Notions are putting on beard wearing, chain wielding, genre melding Brooklynites O'Death in Whelan's on Wednesday, July 22nd. I missed their visit here late last year but heard nothing but good reports about it. I've got a double pass to give away for the gig. To be in with a chance to win them send your answer to the following question to thrillpiercomp@gmail.com with "O'Death" in the subject line. Who is O'Death's ukulele player? Entry to the competition will close on Tuesday afternoon and the winner will [...]
At Brooklyn Bowl's inaugural concert this past Friday, local country/punk boys O' Death were, as usual, 3/5ths shirtless, though the nudity was perhaps unnecessary given the new Williamsburg/Greenpo... Photoo Credit: blogs.villagevoice.com New York's O'Death didn't waste any time at the Empty Bottle last Saturday night. Like the Pogues and Gogol Bordello before them, O'Death's music is steeped in traditional instrumentation and arrangements. What sets O'Death apart, however, is that punk rock seems to naturally fit into what they define as "traditional music." Take a solid rhythm section and throw in singer and guitarist Greg Jaime's John Darnielle meets inebriated Neil Young vocals, and what you get is O'Death. Assuming that the band ripped through the venue fueled [...]

Have you heard O'death 's album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin ? It came out in October of last year and it's been on constant rotation at Chez Tart ever since. It's been characterized as "a giddy junkyard hoedown" that's part gospel, part punk, part Americana. I've heard the phrase "you've not really heard O'death until you've heard them live" and was hoping that it wasn't just talk. Well, my darling readers, let me tell you. It. Wasn't. Just. Talk. Oh no... this band was more than amazing on stage. My blog buddy, [...]

This past weekend, the Northside Festival descended upon Brooklyn, NY, providing a full weekend of music showcases. As one should expect, Consequence of Sound was on site to take in the sites and sounds. Rose Martelli has our second report on the festivities... O'Death: June 13th: Music Hall of Williamsburg Even without the "O" at the start of their band moniker - or the very fact that said moniker was borrowed from a song on the [...]
Jen from The Music Slut had an extra ticket to the O'Death day show at Williamsburg Music Hall on Saturday. Being that O'Death is one of my favorite Brooklyn bands I gladly tagged along. The Hall was pretty empty but I guess that makes sense considering it was only 3PM. Nonetheless, O'Death put on one hell of a show. As I've noticed in other similar situations it seems that bands play better with

Nothing like seeing rock bands at 2 in the morning. I started my day yesterday with a wonderful brunch at Egg than I ran over to the Music Hal of Williamsburg to catch the Extraordinaires . These guys are as fun as they look in this image. I knew of them because they are good friends with the Peekers and they always raved about them, but I never had an opportunity until this weekend to see them. They put on a really good live show. Bands in general need [...]
