Well, the holiday is just about over, and people will soon be getting back to their usual schedules. As you may know, we skipped the S-25 Mix last Sunday to present New Indie Christmas Songs. Now, it's time to return to regular programming. If you're not familiar with this relatively new playlist series, The Sunday 25 [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Compilations collecting genre obscurities have become ubiquitous in the decade since the re-release of Nuggets by Rhino in 1998. From Soul Jazz Records' expert retrospectives to idiosyncratic reissue labels like Subliminal Sounds, the average trip to the (proverbial?) record store promises not only the latest contemporary releases, but also a definitive sampling of once-obscure genres like Italo Disco and African Highlife. Stones Throw imprint Now-Again has assembled Forge Your Own Chains with this market saturation in mind. The 16-track survey of "Heavy Psychedelic Ballads and Dirges" recorded between 1968 and 1974 forgoes loyalty to a specific country or style of [...]

Ofege My love of African music continues with the Nigerian band Ofege. This album might be the best of the bunch . Ofege recorded Try and Love in 1973, while they were still in high school. The 5-piece band (aged 15 - 17) consisted of Paul Alade (bass & vocals), Felix Inneh (guitar & vocals), Melvin Ukachi (vocals), Mlke Meme (drums & vocals) and Dapo Olumide (keyboard). Heavy western influences can be found on the album: Traffic, Carlos Santana, Velvet Underground and Jeff Beck come to [...]

New year, new weekly feature here at Naive Harmonies. Every Wednesday STACKS shall endeavor to shed light on at least one golden nugget from yester-year. Whether it's a new reissue unearthing some unjustly overlooked should-be classic, or a nostalgic glance towards a more well-worn oldie but goodie, if the copyright predates NH, it's fair game here at STACKS. Shall we begin? For the past year or so, I've become increasingly enthralled with the glut of West African music from the 1970's that seems to have experienced a recent renaissance and re-examination. For the past several years, [...]

We mentioned 'Forge Your Own Chains' in our round up of '09, time to give it a proper acknowledgement. Released on Stones Throw subsidiary Now Again , it's a terrific collection of weeping, psychedelic ballads & hallucinogenic dirges. A must for anyone with ears. Available in all the usual places . Ofege- It's Not Easy (Download) A good portion of the Cluster/Moebius back catalogue has been made available digitally for the first time via the Bureau B imprint. Dieter Moebius's debut long [...]
This week, we feature a batch of reissues and new albums that hone in on the groove, hearty listening for early winter that will keep you warm at night.

Now Again / Stones Throw just released a compilation of essential "beat-heavy global psychedelia" from the late '60s/early '70s, entitled Forge Your Own Chains . One standout jam is the fuzzed out afro-funk of the Strangers ' " Two To Make a Pair ." Now Again calls the track "a winning example of the sound that leapt out of East Nigeria after the January 1970 armistice in the Nigerian Civil War." mp3: the strangers :: two to make a [...]
I think I found this on the always tasteful Club Cortez . Nobody Fails is a moody afro-psychedelia piece by Nigerian band Ofege. Off their Try and Love album which is available at Boomkat. Buy from Boomkat MP3 Ofege - Nobody Fails

Beautiful afro-folk from Nigerian band Ofege, taken from their 1977 LP ' Higher Plane Breeze'' ... Ofege - Come Right

It never ceases to amaze me how much music there is in the world. While I was digging through the digital crates recently I came across Now Again Records , a record collectors' paradise and a subsidiary of Stones Throw Records. Here you'll find some amazing reissues (and some new releases) that span the psychedelic-funk-soul-R&B continuum from the four corners of the world; some of these records - now out of print - are going for serious $$ by DJ's near and far. Much of the reissue stuff is available to buy from [...]
