As part of the Just Like Honey Charity Cover Compilation, this track from Oh Minnows enhances the original from the Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy album. Does it sound familiar? This track has appeared in several soundtracks as well - Lost in Translation , Zack and Mira Make a Porno and I Melt with You . We're true fans of Oh Minnows now as we featured "Everyday" as a Song of the Week last year and routinely spin their For Shadows album. Proceeds benefit Breast Cancer [...]

I don't really have to write much in this post. All you need to know is that it's for a good cause and you should go buy it. 11 bands . 1 song . All profits to Breast Cancer Care . Full tracklisting and details here . I'll be honest, before i downloaded this the only contributing artists i'd heard of were Keep Shelly In Athens and Laki Mera. I'm glad to have been introduced to We Are Enfant Terrible and the rest. As a [...]

The calm before the storm. Literally. New York is bracing for the biggest hurricane it's ever faced (named after Irene Ryan, Granny Clampett was one tough cookie) and I'm just hoping my 100 year-old building will survive the winds. (It survived the earthquake on Monday... what a week!) Until then, or if you're somewhere not on the East Coast of the United States, please enjoy the collection of mostly jangly pop. This week mostly ping-pongs between now and the mid-'80s (hey, that's new for me!), with a few stops in the '90s as well. Cover art this week [...]
In the couple of months since I last blogged Oh Minnows, Chris Steel-Nicholson has released his debut album For Shadows. It's an impressive calling card, full of the synth-led psych-pop I was expecting, but also a few suprises, such as noisy shoegazy guitar, and an inclination to veer from the ...

Oh Minnows is the solo project of Chris Steele-Nicholson, formerly of the fairly short-lived London-based indie rock outfit, Semifinalists.

Here's the latest instalment of videos by London bands we heart: Vondelpark - Hipbone The 87th release from the Vondelpark boys' new, second EP, nyc stuff and nyc bags. Nod your heads, people, because time is about to slow down for the next four minutes. Dealing in terms of slow-drive relativity, Oh Minnows latest single, "You'll Never Know Us" might seem a lot shorter or a lot longer than its stated run time. The song is wall of warm synths, backed by an intermittant guitar poking out stepped intervals like a teenager lazily punching holes in drywall. The

Tweet Some music makes you sit up and take notice, other music makes you want to mutilate your own ears with the nearest blunt instrument and some music, well, some just slows. everything. down. Within the noise a quietness descends and calm pervades all. Oh Minnows achieve this. The musical equivalent of a still, calm lake on a spring morning. Temporary peace in an album sleeve. Oh Minnows is the genius of Chris Steele-Nicholson (ex of Semifinalists) and they release their first [...]

The multi-instrumentalist Chris Steele-Nicholson could have the best solo project of this year and a few possible five-star tracks in his debut For Shadows . After seeing the video (below) for our SOTW, it dawned that Chris didn't isolate himself during the production of this album since he embraced the idea that we are all living together. The synthesizer effects coupled with the boy's Mighty Mouse-inspired jaunt are what this week needs - "Oh Minnows - Everyday" For more information on Songs of [...]
'Everyday'is from Oh Minnows' debut album, For Shadows , out this week. Also, take a gander at "You'll Never Know Us" . http://ohminnows.com/
Oh Minnows - The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Chris Steele-Nicholson, formerly of the cult Brit indie band Semifinalists, is epic-sized, plugged-in art-pop drawn on a big, bold and colorful canvas...New album is the product of two years of work // Release : For Shadows (July 25, U.K.) // Sounds like : a throwback to 80's synth-heavy production and electronically manipulated drums, these are songs that never met another layer of sound they didn't like...fortunately, there's enough muscle in the chuggin' guitar riffs in songs like "Another Volunteer" to balance the more ethereal elements... [...]

New videos by London acts that Some Of It Was True would eat staples for: The Vertigos - Rubix So The Vertigos are from St Albans are from London and that's not technically London. While you're pedantically pointing to the atlas, I'll be thrashing my head around merrily to the best, crashiest and most thrilling rock song I've heard in weeks. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Vondelpark - Camels The lattest slice [...]

I've been closely following Oh Minnows ever since I got my paws on their debut Might EP a couple of years ago, but Chris Steele-Nicholson is now back with his first full length LP out now on the ever wonderful Young & Lost Club . The album opens with the upbeat Another Volunteer that pulsates with optimism, a theme of the album, as you lay down your head down and ponder the sanguine expectations of life. A Performance is where the album begins to stand out, however, with Steele-Nicholson spending the first minute [...]
Oh Minnows is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Chris Steele-Nicholson formerly of the cult Brit indie band Semifinalists. As a preview of his forthcoming album For Shadows , the product of two years of work and due in the U.K. July 25, "You'll Never Know Us" is drenched in synth-heavy 80's art-pop. It's big, it's dreamy, it's massively hooky. Catch the video after the jump... Oh Minnows - "You'll Never Know Us" (from For [...]

ex-Semifinalists man Chris Steele-Nicholson aka Oh Minnows has released the video for the album's first single 'You'll Never Know Us'.
Hotcakes are proudly introducing a new feature this month. It is called Baker's Dozen, in which we will be revealing the 13 tracks that have hit us hardest over the past month. Feast your ears on our most loved tracks over June. YACHT - Dystopia This is pretty much what we have come to expect from a band with such a distinct style, with added anger. This album , lead by this hectic track, has very unexpectedly propelled itself into contention for a high position at the end of the year. [...]

Guess what MFM has that you don't? The new record from Oh Minnows , which is (a) called 'For Shadows' and (b) coming out a whole month earlier than we had anticipated. Yes, seriously. It's been bumped up to June 20th from its original release date of July 25th, and it's rather good. Then again, if a band can put a song like this on their record, they must have something special going. This here is the excellent 'You'll Never Know Us', following on from single 'Another Volunteer', the video to which we posted a few weeks [...]

Today I trudged around in the rain for two hours, and loved it: there's something exhilarating about getting wet, and just not caring, walking on, and on. You need dream-ridden , atmospheric songs in your ears though, ones that sweep you along on a woozy wave. Oh Minnows , the new project of ex- Semifinalist Chris Steele-Nicholson, produces just that: slumberous rock riffs, stirring vocals, breezy keys, cosy feel. He's signed to Young & Lost Club (a first full-length is due later this year; below are songs, and a great remix, from it) and divides his time between Chicago, [...]
