As foreshadowed a month or so ago, Oh No has released his latest LP on the Stones Throw label, the awesometastically titled Dr. No’s Ethiopium . It’s an interesting album – 18 songs totaling only just over half an hour of music. Only three of the album’s tracks break the 2 minute mark (and those, only barely). It’s a format that fits Oh No’s style perfectly; he’s a beatmaker, not a songwriter. Dr. No’s Ethiopium serves almost as a sampler platter for rappers. It’s a catalogue of you-could-rap-over-this teasers that are begging to find their way onto [...]

I haven't done one of these in a while, but here are a few new hip hop tracks I've been digging lately. Just a tremendous track. Big Boi makes Outkast relevant once again, if Pitchfork's lists didn't already. Big Boi- Shine Blockas feat. Gucci Mane The newest Fool's Gold signee, this dude is a less guilty T-Pain. This [...]

...& ya just don't stop... back like a bad dream like I never left...Ya kNOw what time it cuz you iz da faithful... why I am typing "ghett-right"? I have no idea. Anyways, this one goes out to all the purists of sound & the respecognition of listening to an album from beginning to end. If a track had to much damn dead space @ the end of a track I took that batch out. If a song was dope as fuck in a mix that I loved I got that schitt up in this piece! You don't play when [...]

Guilty Simpson & Oh No “My Time To Shine” Guilty Simpson & Oh No “My Time To Shine” from Forge Your Own Chains 45. This is Guilty over the original version, followed by Oh No flipping the beat. Track produced by Egon & Oh No. Forge Your Own Chains Album

This week has already been nuts. Not only was I told that I'd be engineering the Killa Priest show that'll be rolling through VT next week, but someone beautiful was nice enough to drop OH NO 's Ethiopium onto my hard drive. The son of Otis Jackson and brother of Madlib , OH NO builds insanely psychedelic beats that bridge decades and countries. He was part of last year's Red Bull [...]

OH NO VS. NOW-AGAIN - CROSS COUNTRY Oh No vs. Now-Again is the producer/rapper/DJs take on the vast catalog of funk, soul and psychedelia contained in the Now-Again vaults. A total of 29 tracks. The collection is presented in a “mini LP” package which includes a thick cardboard “tip on” sleeve. This CD will not be repressed.

Oh No flips some psych-soul from Now Again 's vaults, taken from the limited-edition Oh No vs. Now Again record, out now on Stones Throw : mp3: oh no vs. now-again :: cross country Oh No vs. Now Again is a limited one-time pressing of 500. Get it here . ********

We don't bring up hip-hip too much around here. Not sure if ya'll (i.e. Billy Corgan) consider that a good or a bad thing. But one common thread throughout all the musical bases covered here is a good dose of hauntology . Where short-wave enthusiasts on labels like Ghost Box re-contextualize the past into un-filmed-film scores, L.A. producer Oh No creates hypothetical worlds and collaborations that bridge decades and countries. So I think it's time to start budgeting some real estate for cerebral hip-hop here at TDT. Not to mention, listening to Dilla's Donuts for [...]

Anyone who calls themselves “the New Jack of Brooklyn boom bap” is sure to grab my attention sooner or later, but for a number of reasons - mainly being too lazy and/or bored to make my way through the slew of low budget videos that flood music blogs every day - I have been sleeping on BK (Brooklyn, not Burger King) M.C. Fresh Daily. After stumbling over Fresh Daily over at the always dependable Spine Magazine , I decided to rectify the situation and delve a little deeper. As it transpires, Fresh is down with [...]

( 1 ) .... and after giving it the run around my ipod for much of my trip to the continent, I' can comfortably say that it lives up to its turkish predecessor . Just itching to put it on my system, but that's going to have to wait a little while yet - If I had the money I'd be tracking Oh No down right now and commissioning a round the world trip to translate each nations sound into [...]

Simple question: Which of these are you checking for this week? John Forte returns (courtesy of Dubya , who should make his rap album liner notes debut under "Special Thanks"), Japan-based funk-jazz dudes 9DW drop an album and Oh No takes on the entire Now-Again library. What you know about this week?
