Merry Christmas Eve! Had my radio show on Christmas Eve. So I decided to play alot of Christmas Holidays tunes. Thanks to The Line of Best Fit , I mostly played from the Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada Compilation. Played alot of Canadian tunes. Check it out! Here is the playlist: The Elwins - Baby Rudolph [...]

Trying to make sense of my raspy voice on Sunday morning, I could only chalk it up to those damn kids at Lee's Palace supporting Canadian civil liberties. The blame is squarely directed at them. Nathan Lawr ( MINOTAURS frontman and all-round good guy) recently organized an initiative to attract more art-community involvement in issues related to civil liberties ( check out the website here ). This past Saturday there was a stacked launch party to celebrate the initiative, which should prove to be a great thing for Canadian artists and freedom of speech-lovers in general. [...]

Live music picks for MONDAY NOVEMBER 26 through SATURDAY DECEMBER 1, 2012. MONDAY NOVEMBER 26 / LYDIA LOVELESS / THE DRAKE HOTEL / 1150 QUEEN W / $10.50 - $12 / 19+ Lydia Loveless may be only 21 years old, but her music projects the confidence of a much older soul. She specializes in a blend of alt-country and punk, and while this combination may sound a bit unusual, it works surprisingly well. Loveless's music exudes a level of confidence that [...]

Yannick Grandmont Until recently, Montréal's Godspeed You! Black Emperor has been inexorably associated with a very certain moment in time, specifically the end of the last century and the dawn of this one. In addition to emerging at a time when post-rock was still an amorphous musical concept which was better felt than explained and Canada was only beginning to take steps towards becoming an international presence as home to exciting new music, Godspeed's trilogy of albums - F# A# , Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven [...]

You go through phases in life, it's just a given. Some times an abrupt change signals a transition from one frame of mind to another, other times it's more subtle. I can look back at the archives of this blog and see the phases I've gone through, and in some case, even track changes in artists I've written about. Take Kat Burns, for instance. She first entered my consciousness as the voice behind Toronto's Forest City Lovers, back when I was deep in a torrid love affair with all things acoustic, folk, and pop. Now that I've been [...]

I was curious to who is Warm Myth . Low and behold, it is Toronto's Casey Mecija of Ohbijou and Kieran Adams who drums for Sarah Harmer , Bonjay and whatever band he drums for. If you like electronica dream-wave/chill-wave similar to Washed Out, then you should check out their music. Cool that Casey is stepping out of her comfort zone and experimenting on this kind of music. It's fun, cool and amazing to hear her vocals in [...]

Frank Yang Friday nights usually find Torontonians spoilt for entertainment options and tonight will be no exception, but if you're at all unsure of what to do with your evening then consider heading down to Lee's Palace. It's hosting a benefit concert for three young Oakville boys whom, following a tragic series of events, were orphaned in January of this year and in addition to all the emotional devastation, were left in a dire financial situation. Their uncle, however, was a founding member of The Hidden Cameras and has deep connections to the [...]

Shervin Iainez Rose Cousins is not a new artist. The Charlottetown by way of Halifax artist has been releasing music for the better part of a decade and I've technically heard her before as she's guested on any number of Maritime-born records including Joel Plaskett's, but I'd not heard any of her own material until her third full-length album We Have Made A Spark , released at the end of February. And clearly that's been my loss. It's not a record that stops you in your [...]

I don't know if I'm just a strange breed, but I've always had this infatuation with what my favorite artists are listening to at the moment. Knowing what tracks musicians themselves are actually fans of is always intriguing to me. I remember getting weirdly fired up when Rolling Stone or other publications would run articles showcasing some big time artist's favorite records. Everybody eats that shit up right? Maybe? Okay cool. We got Spree Wilson, Sol and Brenton Duvall's best tracks of 2011 earlier - now it's on to the next. Enter Detroit's own Rai Knight. Her anthem "New New" is still [...]
