Frank Yang Though his punk credentials are beyond reproach thans to his tenure in Propagandhi , John K. Samson has always cut a bit of a curious figure in front of The Weakerthans . While his bandmates are more than willing and able to play the part of rockers in turning out muscular guitar riffs and solos, Samson by comparison has always been a bit slight of stature, reedy of voice, sheepish of grin; the thoughtful and verbose folksinger who somehow ended up fronting a rock band. I don't know if the [...]

Todd V Wolfson I feel that I should say up front that any reservations I have about Kathleen Edwards and her work are entirely my own issues. Since her 2002 debut Failer , I've enjoyed her honest, roots-rock fare but always felt like I expected more from her creatively even though across her first three albums, she'd never shown any signs that she had ambitions beyond being a good singer-songwriter. That said, the fact that she spent her downtime following 20082s Asking For Flowers [...]

Well I started off writing the old looking forward, looking back, eating less, drinking less, spending less routine. But then I thought bollocks, why state the obvious when I never do anyway? January comes around with increasing swiftness the older I get, so it's with a wince of mental planning and a little bit of trepidation that I look forward to this year's thrills and spills, musically and otherwise. Because as sure as eggs are eggs, nothing stays the same forever, for better or worse. Happy New Year! Mrs Mackerel Download Ohbijou - [...]

Frank Yang It may have sounded like Tuesday night's grand Fucked Up throwdown at The Great Hall was going to be an untoppable finale to the 2011 concert season in Toronto, but remember - that was just the first of a two-night event and if you were going to try and top a recital of one of 20112s best albums (that's David Comes To Life , for the record) then a front-to-back performance of one of the best Canadian albums of the past 15 years is a pretty good [...]

Here it is, the cheery classic carols and a handful of christmas originals from your favorite indie and folky bands. I hope it's enjoyed by those that like christmas songs because it was a bit of a struggle to put all this good cheer and songs of joy and peace in one playlist without gagging. Just kidding...kind of. If you want the darker side check out yesterday's anti-christmas playlist . There's some secret bonus songs on the ZIP file not listed below too. A Very [...]
No Matter is the new self-released EP from Vancouver musician C. Sterling . The record is four songs of starkly beautiful folk, with a haunting minimalism that should appeal to fans of groups like Timber Timbre . Listen to the title track, featuring Casey Mecija of Ohbijou , here:
No Matter (feat. Casey Mecija) by C. fanfarlo.com When it was announced earlier this Summer that Canadian Musicfest / Canadian Music Week was moving from it's traditional slot in the second week of March - right before SXSW - to the fourth week of March - right after SXSW - I was confused and concerned. Confused because, well, I dislike change, and concerned because whereas doing back-to-back festivals is exhausting no matter which way you order it, I liked that I could get into game shape with CMW, go hard through SXSW and then collapse immediately afterwards and savour my annual post-Austin [...]

Download: Hey Rosetta! - "Bandages" I feel like I've been rather late to the party with Hey Rosetta! having only been listening to them for a month or so. "Bandages" was my toe in the water with these Canadians, I caught the live video and instantly jumped on the Hey Rosetta! bandwagon...Hey Rosetta! are magical. [...]
by Lucy Dearlove I'd picked four of the six singles for this column when I realised there was a distinct theme going on: GIRLS. So I figured I might as well run with it, and here are some fabulous ladies singing for the second last week in November. There's some gorgeous stuff out this week, but I have to admit I haven't listened to any of these as many times as I've listened to 212 by Azealia Banks. You're welcome. Seapony 'Sailing' [...]

Daniel Boud If the ubiquity of decorations, lights and carols wasn't enough of a hint, let me be the one to break it to you - like it or not, the Christmas season is upon us. And with the holiday season comes Christmas concerts and performances, but if Handel's Messiah or The Nutcracker Suite aren't your speed, local hardcore heroes Fucked Up would like to offer you an alternative - a complete album recital of David Comes To Life . As touring commitments for [...]

Ohbijou , a Tornoto based band, released their sophomore album, Metal Meets, last month and has been getting a lot of spins around here. Part of the allure is lead singer Casey Mecija's youthful voice that you can't quite be described by words. I am certainly not the first, nor will I be the last, to say that this is a perfect fall album. It's cozy, warm, and something about the strong presence of strings feels autumnal. It's completely enchanting and worth checking out. Watch the beautiful black and white video for Niagara here . [...]
