I first came across Kero One several years ago on MySpace and was diggin' his jazzy, souful hip-hop sound. Since then his career has been blossoming and he recently dropped his second album Early Believers which is really dope. I'm not sure what it is about the Bay Area that produces such sunny, organic hip-hop, but cats up there sure do make music like it's summer all year round! Early Believers is definitely on a feel-good tip - from the smooth, melodious tracks to the positive, no-drama lyrical content. And I [...]
After posting The Tones yesterday, I started listening to more stuff from their label, PLUG, and I've been digging it. In that spirit, here's more hip-hop from PLUG, this time by Portland artist Ohmega Watts. ohmega watts "On And On"...
Just thought I'd shine a light on some random titbits of US made music for you on this good evening: Beat Assailant had a great 12" out a few years ago entitled 'Hard Twelve - The Ante' ( video ). He's just released his second album which is called 'Imperial Pressure' and if something sounding like Lupe Fiasco meets The Roots meets Herb Alpert sounds like your particular thing then get yourself a copy. The songs go on a little too long with a quite an emphasis on the (well [...]
Two of my faves, Ohmega Watts and Jneiro Jarel team up for this video "Eyes and Ears" taken from the former's album Watts Happening. The album came out last year on Ubiquity, but this is just now being released as a digital single, which features an additional mix from Clutchy Hopkins. You can get a wee taste of that mix on Ubiquity's site . Ohmega Watts Feat. Jneiro Jarel - Eyes And Ears from Ubiquity Records on Vimeo . [...]

Can I give a Soul Drop? I need to start doing this on the regular cause I always seem to be circling back to the funky business and throwing tracks around to people. Hip hop blog nothin... Anyway, I've been doing a lot of driving lately and the soul playlist gets a lot of love. [...]

Ohmega Watts is a hip-hop producer / MC from Brooklyn. Nestled within his impressive most recent release, Watts Happening , is this funky, old-school, afrobeat-licious instrumental groove called "The Platypus Strut". Everyone should have a personal theme song or two to play in their head (or iPod) while they're walking down the street. For me, this may have to join the Commodores' "Machine Gun", Kool & the Gang's "Jungle Boogie", and Prince's "Sexy MF" in my list of "walk down the street like a bad-ass" theme songs. What's your theme song? [...]

schubas' 4th annual "tomorrow never knows" festival is happening this weekend, with john vanderslice & the m's kicking things off tonight...the event started back in 2005 as a way to showcase up & comers during the frigid & normally concert barren month of january here in chicago, & over the years it's seen performances from great acts like magnolia electric co., tapes 'n tapes, the ponys, dr. dog, & flosstradamus (to name a few)...this year's got an equally eclectic line up with detroit afrobeat outfit nomo playing tomorrow night along with bobby conn & baby teeth, while much blogged [...]

That picture is about on par with how fresh this guys music is - it's like the best of the 80's and 90's hip hop but it comes off about as thug as jazz does - he is the guy that sits in your design course that has this aesthetic to him that reminds you of old records and new Nikes. Ohmega Watts is his name and he has a new album! it's called "Watts Happening" and while it's not as good as "The Find" it has some pretty tight tracks in it [...]

MOKB loved Ohmega Watt's 2005 album The Find . You can read about it here . Well, tonight the rapper is playing a free show, here in Indianapolis, at The Jazz Kitchen courtesy of Indianapolis promotions company Old Soul Entertainment . Watts is out touring in support of his new album Watts Happening . The album is again filled with a wide [...]
Yes I did see Pinback this weekend @ The Opera House . Not my favourite venue in the world, but beggars can`t be choosers. It was well worth the $$ too, they played for over two hours. Ripping threw a ton of old material and playing a few new ones as well. There was a few jerks who thought that talking and being loud drunks was hilarious.....almost ruined the show for me.....but I out smarted them.......and moved. I would also like to say that Zach Smith [...]

This Picture was taken somewhere in Chicago. If you know where this is at you should take a picture of you there, and send it to us. It rained last night, and this morning I realized that before I left the house I should have grabbed a sweater. I still don't know when Autumn officially begins so if you know let me know. When I think Autumn, I think sweaters, layers, leaves and hot chocolate. The weather is slowly changing, but in southern California there aren't very drastic changes. A mini mix for the autumn lovers. [...]

I will not and do not pretend to know all that much about hip-hop, I only know that every summer I go through a phase where I want to listen to some good underground hip-hop and that phase started this morning. Here is what I listened to. [mp3] Atmosphere - Say Hey There [mp3] Sharlok Poems (feat. J Beits, B-Twice, and Pigeon John) - Driven By The Facts [mp3] Ohmega Watts & Lightheaded - That Sound [mp3] [...]

Yes, it exists. I'm not going to go on a State Of Hip Hop rant, but I've been meaning to do a Tres Records post ever since I launched this site. Tres ( not actually run by Thes of PUTS as everyone seems to think ) is putting out some great stuff! This is a label to watch. These two 123s in particular have never left my crates since I got them. So, I figure this will help me rotate them out to keep myself from playing them to death. [...]
As Lollapalooza quickly approaches, these posts will be coming more frequently. Here are a few more from some of the artists that will be playing this year's festival. Lots of good stuff including the Chili Peppers covering The Ramones, The Subways covering TV On The Radio, and even a new Cursive song. I'm not happy about having to miss their set early on Friday, but I've seen them before so I guess I'll live. Oh yeah, Towers Of London aren't playing. MP3 | [...]
