Monday: Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears @ Pianos 8pm $8 Black Joe Lewis is tearing up the live circuit. They blew away audiences down at SXSW and have been name checked from Spin to Esquire lately thanks to their old school bluesy garage sound. I have yet to see the band but after listening repeatedly I have to say that this seems like the type of band you need to see live in order to truly appreciate them. So do that tonight! Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears - "Get Yo Shit" [...]
The past two nights of Noise Pop have been great with excellent performances from Deerhunter ( photos/review ), Antony and the Johnsons , Stephen Malkmus , Mountain Goats , French Kicks and many more. Tonight brings even more amazing shows, with performances by Stranger Dance favorites like Josh Ritter , Thao Nguyen , A.A. Bondy and a host of great local bands including Thee Oh Sees , Scissors for Lefty and Man/Miracle (many of which were featured on our recent Best [...]

Who : Bonnie "Prince" Billy When : May 21st Where : Apollo Theater On Sale : NOW More Dates Thoughts : It's amazing to me that I have never seen Bonnie "Prince" Billy live. You would think after all the shows I've been to that I would get to one for an artist I respect as much as I do Bonnie "Prince" Billy, but nope never have. And now that he's big enough to be playing the Apollo [...]
We decided to change things up for this month's mix. Instead of working around a theme ( Christmas , Harmony , etc.), we're highlighting some of the best artists from San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. After pouring through our local music collection, we came up with so much good music that we quickly realized that it'd be impossible to whittle the list down to a single mix, so we're making this a two-parter. This month's installment will feature some of the more toe-tap-worthy with next month's dedicated to songs with less than 80 BPM and/or [...]

For some reason I've been receiving email correspondence from Kanye West. Here's his latest message: "THIS IS MY LAST DAY IN PARIS AND IT'S BEEN CRAZY. I'VE MET SO MANY DOPE PEOPLE. I FEEL SO INSPIRED BY THE TRIP… I'VE BEEN THINKING OF RAPS, BEATS, CLOTHES, VIDEOS ,STAGE DESIGNS AND PHILOSOPHIES … I ALWAYS FEEL MY BEST WORK IS MY NEXT WORK… I'VE MADE SOME GOOD CHOICES AND SOME MISTAKES… I'VE BEEN LOVED AND HATED…. I'VE BEEN HAILED AND RIDICULED… I'VE BEEN INVITED TO SHOWS AND AS USUAL ASKED NOT TO COME… I'VE BEEN [...]

I have a huge sweet spot for garage rock and any similar genres like garage punk, surf rock, and rockabilly. Some of the more stuff I've posted in this vein includes bands like the Ooga Boogas , Black Lips , Demon's Claws, Strange Boys , Jay Reatard , etc. I always have my ears open to any garage goodness I come across, but it can be difficult because a lot of the good stuff is somewhat obscure and only released on vinyl through labels most people are unfamiliar with. But, I have [...]

So, the big moment has arrived. During the next week (or two weeks, depending on the time i have to present yo this list), i'll tell you what my 50 favourite records were from 2008. I must admit I haven't listened to every album that got released this year, but maybe i'll make a few corrections at the end of the year. Maybe not. Comment as much as you want, cause i really enjoy that. Oh, by the way. You don't have to read everything. Just check out the mp3-links, look for them on myspace or the illegal [...]

This week on the show, we're causing co-motion with women and pixies. The debut LP from the Canadian band Women is as catchy as it is artsy. We've got a few tracks from that and the Library Tapes, Marnie Stern, and caUSE Co-MOTION!, too. Also, let's not forget the two new albums from the California's very own garage rock ruckus, thee Oh Sees. This is a pretty consistently cool podcast. The Needle Drop 10-25-08 Playlist: Women - " [...]
Garage rock has a rich history of being rough and energetic. Though the genre suffers from a bit of predictability, San Francisco's thee Oh Sees are making that irrelevant. Their music lives in the moment, and it should make anyone within earshot do the same. Their music has a lo-fi edge to it, but that doesn't stop the drums and bass from pounding like a headache. The band is lead by John Dwyer of Coachwhips fame, and even though the experimental and noise elements are still there, this band feels like a toned [...]
...the way you can watch these things as they are happening. This is a rant, so it will inevitably include leaps of logic and easily misunderstood language. Be prepared. It's a little piece on how the music industry works, which is something every citizen in America should be aware of, IMO. It's a case study, and the source material is The Vivian Girls. Pitchfork just reviewed the new Vivian Girls record and started with this line: "In a year when Brooklyn buzz travels around the world at lightspeed, you can probably count [...]
...are my new favorite band. what the fuck, they are amazing. I want to see them live again. They make me want to drive to Dallas tomorrow just to see them and then drive back in the morning or something. Anyone want to split the gas?

This list was revised a few times and I took some recommendations from other blogs and many of those albums ended up being really good and were added to my top 10. I left out lots of things but it's all old news already so I'll leave it at that. Also I made a playlist for you. okayyyyy, yeah. *****Fav. Albums of 07***** 1. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam & Panda Bear - Person Pitch 2. A Place To Bury Strangers - A Place To Bury Strangers [...]

Upon hearing the word of an Eric's Trip reunion , a serious part of me began yearning for their lo-fi production. Man, it is no wonder why our recollections of the 1990s are so fuzzy. That's just how the 90s rolled. But! Before scouring the house for my old, scratched copies of Love Tara or Forever Again , I happened across the latest album from John Dwyer's The Ohsees . And, while not nearly as distortion-laden as the Trip was, the fuzziness rears it's head, in all its fuzzy [...]

Will someone please hurry up and invent a time machine so I can skip ahead to the future of Two Weeks From Now when my new favorite CD Sucks Blood by The Ohsees finally arrives in the mail? Also, can anyone out there invent a pill which makes me feel as elated as I do when listening to It Killed Mom , the current runaway favorite on my Urinary Hit Parade of Excitement? This song is why God invented the repeat button (and the urinary [...]

“The Guilded Cunt†from “The Cool Death of Island Raiders†7.5/10 No, I didn’t pick this track because of its name, as funny as that would’ve been. I picked it because, title aside, “The Guilded Cunt†is the among the strongest tracks (as well as the opener) on the OhSees most recent album, “The Cool Death of Island Raidersâ€, released on Narnack Records earlier this year. Though the swampy, suffocated production is immediately apparent and obscures some of the track’s better moments, the vocal interplay and whisper of a rhythm is colorful [...]
