Lovestreams - Shock Corridor "When people think of “confessional” or “intimate” music, they often picture a guy fingerpicking an acoustic guitar, but I think sitting and whispering into your computer is even more weirdly intimate, or has the potential to be." I imagine Will Sheff alone in the dark. I imagine him hunched over. I imagine him whispering into a computer microphone, those old ones from the '90s, white and plastic. I imagine that the room is windowless. I imagine him sitting for days, whispering [...]

Lovestreams is a new project of Okkervil River's frontman Will Sheff . Last year he rented a Brooklyn basement and used it as a recording studio to record a project that he had wanted to do for a long time. He wanted to make an album by himself, for himself, with no expectations taken from his work with Okkervil River. It took him a year to make, and now we is putting the material out there for free, since it cost him almost nothing to make. That album is forthcoming. He has give away [...]

It's always a gamble when a band's frontman decides to release a solo effort: you have some fans that will be into it because they are supportive of any endeavors the band members take; and then you have some that will be extra critical, constantly comparing the sounds of the two projects. Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff will most likely experience this polarization, with the release of his new solo project, Lovestreams. The first single, "Shock Corridor" is noticeably different than Okkervil River; it's more electro-pop than folk rock, with a flurry of synths and gloomy percussion. The [...]

While Okkervil River may have been quiet for a little while, their leader, Will Sheff, has not been so dormant. Over the festive period he spent some time informing readers of his blog about his highlights of the last year or so in a series of very entertaining essays , and now fans have something even more exciting to come from the man. Turns out he's also been using his free time for creativity in a musical fashion too, and will be releasing his first solo material under the name Lovestreams. On his blog Will writes of [...]
Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff has a new project, one he's been quietly working on for about a year. On his website , Sheff writes that he rented a room last year and that he's been going there everyday to work on music from his new solo thing Lovestreams: "I decided to do a project there I’d wanted to do for years and years, which is to make an album by myself and for myself, an album that doesn’t owe anything to music I made before." And today, we get to hear the first song from the project. It's [...]

Last week, Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff posted an itemized list of sentences under the title "Shock Corridor" on his website . As it turns out, these weren't merely sentences, but lyrics to a song by the same name. It's not an Okkervil River track, however, but the first taste of Sheff's new solo endeavor, Lovestreams (that GIF up there makes sense now, doesn't it?). "Shock Corridor" asserts that Lovestreams eschews Okkervil River's indie folk rock in favor of more elector-pop inclined sounds. In a subsequent website post about [...]

Uhmmm...

Each day this week, in anticipation of the deadline for voting on the Festive Fifty 2012 Shortlist , I'll be listening to the Contrast Podcast Festive Fifties of yore (2012's will be the 6th!) and trying to track down the videos of the Top 5! By the 2nd year of the Festive Fifty, I was ready. I had my list set to go before the call came for submissions and I even knew a lot of the songs on the shortlist! This was the year when I actually found new bands to [...]

from Wayne's Twitter McSweeney's has commissioned fantasy writer Richard Parks to create an hour-long radio special starring Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips , which will be aired on Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. Pacific time on KCRW (or streaming at KCRW.com for those not in LA). It's an old-time radio special in the War of the Worlds tradition, and the main conflict has to do with a human-head-sized tumor growing out of Wayne Coyne's leg [...]

As McSweeney's tells it , Parks vanished for a few months, no doubt held up in his writing cave, and emerged with a most bizarre and shimmery gem. "Wayne Coyne’s Human Head-Shaped Tumor" is a "continuous-play radio [...]
Each day this week, in anticipation of the deadline for voting on the Festive Fifty 2012 Shortlist , I'll be listening to the Contrast Podcast Festive Fifties of yore (2012's will be the 6th!) and trying to track down the videos of the Top 5! My snapshot impression of this inaugural edition of the Festive Fifty was that I hadn't paid ANY attention to what had come out in 2007 and I was also very unfamiliar with a lot of the nominees on the shortlist, so I just voted for names I knew! Oh, how times have [...]
