The "Neptunes sound" is candy sweet. Allow me to explain (so that I don't have to say "no homo")... Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, despite their initial successes as hitmakers for the likes of Noreaga and Ol' Dirty Bastard, are responsible for some of the most "bubble gum" music of the past few years. Britney Spears, Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Kelis, Usher, Gwen Stefani - the 'Tunes' signature spaced-out drums, synths and keys, coupled with Pharrell's crackly crooning, are all too familiar to 13-year-old white girls and "To Catch A Predator" detainees alike. Yet, [...]

After emerging from (being a spectator to) an argument on the merits/faults of rap music I was amazed that the two argumentative idiots ended up concluding that the best rap was the stuff DJ's and producers had got their hands on and fixed/remixed. So I've gone through my itunes and selected my favourite rap remixes , and I hate to admit it... but I think they were right... it's not so much 'rap music' as much as it is club music now, but nonetheless its top quality sounds... You decide: [...]

a london-based artist is cutting the heads off of billboards. maybe it's just an elaborate guerilla campaign for that sweeny todd movie? whatever it is, it's fucking brilliant. Ol' Dirty Bastard "Cuttin' Heads" ( slam x hype on point) EDITOR'S NOTE: No relation to the post below. Coincidence. I swear.

You should all be snuggled tight in your beds dreaming of Saint Nick right about now, but if you're not, then you might as well be busting a move. To provide a bit of assistance in that area, here is an über-mega-large list of remixes to put the hip in your shake. Most of these were penned in 2007, so we'll call it an end of the year, best of, remix, mixtape...or something like that. I inquired to Party Ends and Cubik Musik about the remixes they enjoyed this year, so PE sent over [...]

so, according to the chicago sun-times , radiohead's bassist, colin greenwood, recently disclosed to nme how the band kept in rainbows from leaking... "It felt like ... 'Mission: Impossible' almost. We destroyed all CDs after every day of recording. And on the master we'd always write a name which probably nobody would listen to if we had lost it; 'Eagles: Greatest Hits,' 'Kula Shaker demos,' 'Phil Collins hip-hop covers.' " ...i don't know, i probably would have checked out the phil collins hip hop covers. [...]

Brooklyn's Dre Skull is bringin' some awesomeness to the west coast. If you're not familiar, Dre Skull and his partner Juiceboxxx have been making some of the nicest club-jump-off white-boy rap on any coast. Best example being 'Sweat'—a bouncy party track that consistently gets hipsters onto dancefloors and the sweat-sweat-sweat dripping off. For the 123 single, Spank Rock 's Xxxchange (who happens to be playing at Modular 's ' Party of the Year ' in London tonight) and DJ Funk did remixes. Here's one of 'em: [...]
Music is a wonderful thing. Since I'm completely deaf from the waist down, I often have the music very, very loud in my car, and I sing quite a lot louder than that. It passes the time while I sit waiting in queues for idiots . What surprises me though is how enjoyable it is to hear old, crap songs when compared to new, very good stuff. Let's take the example of today. I was stuck in traffic on the M42 (not an uncommon occurrence), feeling very tired and horrid and icky, listening (and [...]

What's that you say? ODB? He's been been dead for five years? A minor technicality. Rest assured, I will be at ODB's birthday/tribute tonight. Apparently, RZA, Gza and roughly half the Wu will be in attendance. Also, there will be a birthday cake. I like birthday cake. Only fascists, pinkos and low-level insurance salesmen do not like birthday cake. The event is at the 740 Club on 8th and Broadway in Downtown. It promises to be a potentially very very entertaining affair. You should come if you're into that sort of thing. If not, expect a report sometime next week. [...]

There's not much more I can say about ODB that hasn't already been said by someone who is better with these kinds of words. I mean, today is Dirt McGirt's born-day. I just figured, why not give the people some presents, tracks of Dirty's that I absolutely love, and let you niggas know why: " Pussy Keep Calling ": not sure where this ended up ( the Osiris mixtape ?); ODB gettin' raunchy over a nice, slower-tempo track. The funny thing about Dirt Dog was that he was so damn nasty, always high, drunk [...]

Apparently, according to Ghostface (Killah), it's ODB Day. Three years ago the crude rapper died of heart failure. The callus person would ask what more he contributed other than smoking weed and raunchy raps, but, perhaps by marrying those two, he did bring some fun into the picture. It was okay for white kids to like Ol' Dirty Bastard, even though it was mostly for the cursing. And when he changed his name to Big Baby Jesus it was hard to take him seriously. He's the closest thing rap had to a Jim Carrey- the albums may have had weak [...]
Baddest man in the whole damn town! Badder than the deep blue seaaaaa! Badder than you and meeeee! I found it a funny coincidence that they were discussing The Box Music Network (which I can't find jack shit about online or anywhere, despite being an intern there in the mid-late 90s) on FloridaDNB and today was Ol' Dirty Monday at BTB HQ. Nonetheless, I stumbled across some classic material, an [...]

Ol Dirty Bastard "Shimmy (M. Vogel Diskotech Remix)"

Getting through today's Mix Tape without making a complete ass of myself is going to take a portion of my cunning. No, wait... all of my cunning. Let me explain. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. [...]
droppin' new o.d.b. albums like crosby droppin' babies. Ol' Dirty Bastard "Dirty Dirty (Sabbo Remix)"

Courtesy of Universal Pictures ( This is a weekly one-stop resource for movies screening in L.A., with Rotten Tomatoes/Metacritic averages, showtimes and more. Almost all of these movies are also either currently screening outside of L.A., or are going to be in the near future .) Can anybody explain the use of ODB's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" in the opening scene of Knocked Up ? I love the song, and mostly liked the movie, but it was a surreal kind of moment to start things off on. (For those who haven't seen [...]

'07 has been called the Summer of Sequels, and that's a shame, but judging the trailers that preceded Knocked Up , there isn't much hope for original films either. Tell me why I should care about this , this or this . Awful. Some silver lining here though. Anyway, Judd Apatow's latest begins with 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya' so it's an auspicious beginning. The plot is deceptively simple, the characters are suitably bizarre, and the laughs come thick and fast. I rarely laugh out loud, but lines like [...]

annie posted this as a myspace bulletin. and i started to fill it out (which is rare) and was pretty shocked at how it turned out. so i thought i'd post for all you kids with the tuneage. here's how it works: 1. open your itunes. 2. put it on shuffle. 3. press play. 4. for every question, type the song that's playing. 5. when you go to a new question, [...]
