I think this weekly post needed it's own unique image. Usually I would spend so much time looking for random images to use or band pictures but I had some spare time on my hands to whip up something right quick. From my terrible Photoshop skills, this is the crappy result. If someone else would like to submit an image for the Graboid than please feel free, but this will do for now I guess. I was very surprised at how many albums I managed to squeeze into this week's Graboid as I think this might be the [...]

Ola Podrida is the brainchild of David Wingo, an Austin-born, Brooklyn-based composer best known for scoring several movies by David Gordon Green. Ola's self-titled album is out this Tuesday on Plug Research Records and it is a beautiful collection of sweeping, cinematic acoustic based songs. Like the Great Lake Swimmers and Elliot Smith, Ola Podrido can swing the extremes of intensity from pensive and melancholy to intimate and epic which you can hear perfectly on these two songs. Cindy - Ola Podrida [...]

Happy to say that Ola Podrida's debut album is one such album that does completely satisfy. The record is [...]

The One AM Radio / photo by David Greenwald Sorry for the late start this month, folks. Still plenty of stuff to check out as we gear up for Coachella at the end of the month. As usual, these are my picks and obviously not a complete listing (try Rock Insider for that). I'll be at as many as I can -- I already have my tickets for Ola Podrida. 4/12 and 4/13 - Ted Leo w/ Love of Diagrams and Division Day (don't miss these guys!) @ [...]

Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man Zodiac is getting all the early Oscar buzz, and deservedly so, partly thanks to a spellbinding soundtrack that matches the film's haunting imagery and dark mood. This Donovan tune, from 1968 album of the same name, failed to make Pitchfork's now famous Greatest Songs of the '60s list ("Season of the Witch" was #140), but it is now unequivocally the best psych-pop song ever to score the opening scene in a serial-killer opus. Ola Podrida - Instead The debut full-length from David Wingo and band [...]

Here's a great summary (with photos, yeah!) by Dana Falconberry of some of the best music at SXSW yesterday. Dana's official showcase is tonight (Friday) at the Hilton Garden Inn around 8pm. "well, sxsw is officially in full swing, which means i've had about zero time in front of my computer until now. here's what i've been doing: (Photo of Dana at Tequila Mockingbird studios) yesterday i started out the day at Tequila Mockingbird studios with KCRW (from LA), doing a live 30 minute slot for [...]

April. Gute Gründe hier zwei [...]

We've posted on France's Mina Tindle a few times before, and after hearing this new demo, I think it's about time for us to accept that she's going to be a long-time favorite around here. Mina's music possesses the kind of inherent timeless quality (along the same lines as Sparrow House ) that we predict indie-film music supervisors will be all over; it's the kind of song that can turn a scene into an instant classic. It's worth noting that Mina's influences include Feist , Regina Spektor , and Billie [...]

ahh, a warm welcome back to the horse latitudes! we've been quiet these past few weeks, because, frankly theres been presents to open, friends and family to see, copious amounts of food to be scoffed, afternoon naps to be dreamt through and drinks to be drunk (and *rubs forehead gingerly* it wasn't just the drinks that got drunk, i tells ya). but now we're here in 07 and champing at the bit once more. i'm sure each of us will be reaching into our slightly grubby looking stockings, removing the overripe satsuma that, since it wasn't [...]

Last week I received an advance copy of Ola Podrida's self titled album that is being released through Plug Research in the Spring of 2007. What began as a nom de plume for David Wingo's home recording projects has blossomed into a live quartet playing in and around Wingo's present home base of Brooklyn, NY. Continuing in the vein of his self released home recordings, the upcoming album is a thing of quiet beauty reminiscent of the very best under-the-radar homegrown '70s folk experiments. Those familiar with, [...]

We're heading to Austin tomorrow for the ACL Music Festival , as well as a couple tapings of the ACL TV show ( Sufjan , Jack White , and Cat Power , oh my). Anyway, we got to thinking, "Goddamn, Austin is awesome." I know I post on an Austin band seemingly every other day, but I honestly feel like Austin's current independent music scene is better than any other in the U.S. (for sure), and possibly the world. Don't take my word for it though: I've compiled 20 of my favorite [...]
